Started playing SotC HD yesterday. Been playing in 3D, and I'll say the 3D really adds to the awesome sense of scale that the game already had. And HD makes finding those damned white-tailed lizards SOOO much easier.

It's still way harder than it needs to be to get on Aggro though.

Code Veronica makes it so blatantly obvious how much save points sucked. Im glad most games either autosave or let you save whenever you want nowadays.

I fucking hate them. Not only that, but the ribbon system is also shitty. Having to start over if I die doesnt instill fear in me, just frustration.

I think im quitting Code Veronica. I forgot just how long this game was. I finished half the game with Claire, then you have to go through all the same locations with Chris. I dont mind since there are a lot of chances to the game when you play as Chris, but Im not in the mood right now for that.

So, Resident Evil 4? Nowhere near as scary as I remembered it to be. Not scary at all, actually. I just passed the part in the hedge maze with the wolves and I remembered that to be a pretty intense moment. But I just breezed through it like it was nothing.

If I had to guess, I'd say I'm probably just a better gamer than I was 6 years ago. So I probably had more ammo and healing items than I did the first time. That being said, the atmosphere of the game isn't very tense, either. Dead Space wasn't scary, but it had a great atmosphere that kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time. RE4 doesn't really have that.

It's still an amazing game, though. And it holds up surprisingly well. I'm definitely glad I bought it as I'm having a blast replaying it.

I dont think RE4 was ever scary like the old RE games or Dead Space. It has a great dark and classic atmosphere, but its not really scary.

If anything, I think the only scare out me came when they introduce those weird motherfuckers with the spikes coming out of their body.

Also, RE was never really scary. Fuck the purists. I remember the only reason I found the early games scary was because of how hard the games were. Few healing items, few ammo, low inventory slots to carry it all in. I was scared to restart, not actually scared of something in the game happening. Id like to think its a big difference

The old RE were scary to me as a kid, but not in the sense you might be thinking of. I guess scary is not the best term. Dread would be more accurate. I played RE2 when it got ported to N64, so at that point it had been out for a while and I had heard about it a lot through friends.

So for example, I knew that Tyrant would get dropped on me in a certain corridor, but I didn't know exactly at which point in the game it would happen, so every time I went through it I was nervous as fuck. Same goes for not knowing when Nemesis is going to pop out in RE3.

But I agree, other than the cheap scares that would make you jump, what made the old RE scary was the sense of helplessness that the controls and difficulty caused.

I played through the PSOne version of the first RE when it came out on PSN (it was the first time I ever beat it), and it wasn't really scary.

I really need to play the other ones, though. It's been ages since I beat RE2 (and I only played one of the scenarios), and I never really got far into RE3.

Actually, yeah, I think I'll hold off on buying Code Veronica X HD until I properly beat RE2 and 3.

I think RE4 was scary in some way. Having played it multiple times however just conditions yourself to know what will happen, and thus you can properly prepare and defend.

Seriously, the first time around and having Dr. Salvador breaking through a door to cut your head off was intense. Now? I know I can find a shotgun and a grenade (from a crow) to make him another casualty. The sound of him and his chainsaw is still shocking, but I'm not got to freak out now.

Now when you went back to the church and there were some wolves growling at you from the top, with it being night, that was really unsettling.

That's the thing. I had only ever played the game once before, and so far every moment I remembered to be scary in some way just wasn't.

That includes the second time at the church with the wolves (I just tossed a grenade and actually lol'd at how easily that took care of them), and the hedge maze I mentioned above. There's really only one more part that I distinctly remember being scary that I haven't reached yet. It's a boss fight. but I'm really not sure against who or when it takes place. All I remember is thinking "HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT!!" and running away like a bitch. I think it's against that insect-like henchman thing that follows Salazar around.

I remember beating that guy for the first time. I got lucky...

Your last chance is pretty much in that elevator room with a few more of those tanks. He followed me in and was about to kill me before I got on the elevator.

For the most part, it's like Dead Space. Nothing really "piss my pants" scary, but you'll face moments where you're saying to yourself, "Man, I really don't want to go through there." Pretty much my thought whenever I go through the hedge maze, or have to fight those frickin' insects.

I agree with your assessment of Dead Space, but I don't think it applies to RE4. Dead Space had creepiness combined with the dread of entering certain areas, but RE4 was completely lacking in creepiness, at least to me. To me RE4 wasn't any creepier than fighting the Flood in Halo.

Yeah, that's exactly how I feel (well, except for that Halo comparison).

I remembered RE4 to have genuinely scary parts while Dead Space is more of a creepy/dread thing.

But now that I'm replaying RE4, I feel like it's not scary or creepy at all. I guess I'm less of a pussy than I was last time I played it

Playing through Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Maybe it's always been like this, or perhaps the bonus objectives highlight it, but the mission design is, at times, so terrible.

'Don't kill anyone before doing blah blah'

Why? I kill every other guard. What is so special about these ones? OK then, I'll use the unarmed takedown because that doesn't seem to kill guards, and it never raises Notoriety (unlike stabbing and other methods for killing guards).

'Nope, that counts as a kill. FAILED!'

...still fun though. And the scenery is beautiful. :P
