Been playing Devil May Cry 4. I was a pretty huge DMC fan back in the PS2 days but this one came out a couple months before I got my PS3 and I never got around to getting it, for some reason.

I figure I'm about halfway through, now. Control just switched to Dante. The gameplay is kind of archaic in a lot of ways and it kinda feels like a prettier PS2 game, for the most part. It really doesn't compare to a more modern title like Bayonetta. But I'm enjoying it a lot so far. Feels kinda nostalgic, I guess.

Other than that, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be finishing Nier. Haven't touched it in over two weeks and I have no desire of getting back to it. I'm afraid I really don't get what you guys see in it that's so special. The game does a lot of really interesting stuff but I just really wasn't having any fun playing it. I had been doing a dungeon and ended up running out of items and got stuck on a fight and just went fuck it and quit. Then at some point I realized I had no desire of restarting the dungeon from the beginning.

I've been playing Dragon Age 2 (on PC) and enjoying it so far.  I'm still in Act I, haven't gotten far enough for the levels to get too horribly repetitive, though I can see the seeds of its beginning.  Other than that aspect though and the lack of control over party members' armor it feels quite a lot like Origins in terms of play, which is a good thing IMO.

Lego Lord of the Rings with housemates. My god it's a good job we all like LotR, cos the game itself is a pain in the butt. I think the general consensus we have so far is Batman (which we've played independently of each other) is much better Lego game and style with the platforming and such instead of the vague platformey/puzzley/RPGy thing Lego LotR is aiming for. It's nice it's the real voice clips from the film, but we also feel sometimes they're not quite panned out in the best way.

Played five hours of The Last of Us so far. Can't really say I'm enjoying it, but I don't dislike it. Not exactly spoiler-y, but if there are people who want to stay completely in the dark...

I'm prepared to say that I'm just kinda crap at stealth, or maybe I'm not far enough to get the most out of it, but the encounters have just been...messy. With humans, I try and sneak through but there are usually too-damn-many, and they follow odd paths, that eventually I'm spotted and all hell breaks loose. Fortunately I'm good at running, and battering people's faces in.

With the infected, I just don't get the setup. If it's just clickers then it's easy to sneak past, perhaps shiv any blocking main pathways. However, if it's runners and clickers, there's usually no sure way to get past without starting a massive ruckus. The runners roam around unpredictably, meaning you could get spotted at any moment, even when you're 'past' them. And any attempts at using objects to draw them somewhere to kill them quietly are tricky, because if it's too far away they don't hear or you can't get to them in time before they turn around...or the ploy attracts more than one infected and you need to fetch another brick/bottle (or wait for one to respawn). Lately, I've had to be running around and picking at enemies (which is just messy gameplay) or getting them to gang up on the AI partner and I throw a molotov in there (which just looks silly).

Coming off other games with stealth elements, I can see the key ingredients for my enjoyment aren't really there and the mechanics actively work against that (recognising patterns/routes, methodically picking off each enemy). Not that it's bad or wrong - it's clearly an entirely different, more dynamic system - but it hasn't clicked (lolpun?) yet, I guess

Bottles and bricks are your friends. There's a reason why there are so many of them laying around for your use. You'd think enemies might notice how a bottle or brick flew past their head when you're right around the corner, but in my experience they don't. Especially for the Infected, bottles and bricks are great to make enemies gather in a spot so you can make good distance between you and them.

Clickers, when close to you, can begin to detect you. I've had experience in that regard, but they're primarily walking mines. As soon as they grab you, you're dead unless you have Shiv Master and willing to use a shiv to defend yourself. They can only be taken out with shivs, but again, unless you're in a lower difficulty and willing to gather supplies, it's up to you if you want to use your items there, rather than later, for an enemy you could potential bypass.

You can stealth a lot in the game, in fact you'd be wise to stealth the final area of the game. Thing is, the game wouldn't necessarily penalize you if you feel that you have the resources and skill to take on enemies with weapons and melee. That's on Normal or Hard; Survival is a completely different beast.

The only other stealth game Ive really played is metal gear and TLoU is nothing like MG. Bottles and bricks are probably your best friends, theyre more useful than the guns you carry. Honestly, fighting and shooting are absolute LAST resorts. Ideally you should avoid or take everyone down. Another big difference from MGS is that you can actually run away and if you go far away enough, you can hide and start over again. In MGS if youre discovered, theyll find you absolutely anywhere because thats the way the AI works, in TLoU that just isnt how it goes.

Also, the bow and arrow are quiet. You can kill clickers or anyone with them without being discovered. Also before you do anything else, max out listen mode. Itll help a lot. Then max out health. Then do whatever you want after that.

Another tip is to throw a brick or bottle, wait for the infected to run to it, then throw a molotov cocktail or any other explosive at them. Thats always a good way to clear a room. I spent pretty much all my resources on health packs and molotov cocktails.

Thanks for the tips, but I know what I should be doing. It's just I've never really had a lot of luck with bricks & bottles. Like I said, either they fail to attract attention or they don't hold it for very long and I get spotted when farther into an area. And it's not as if those objects can be crafted or respawn in your backpack (though, I've started noticing a lot more littered around).

Fortunately, yeah, you can just leg it out of there and reapproach, but sometimes it just feels messy and like I'm playing it wrong. Hopefully, it'll all fall into place as I play more, or it's just the sort of area I'm in currently in (wide-open backyards). We shall see...

Been playing Thief Gold the past few days. It's been like a decade since I first played it. I first booted it up out of boredom a couple days ago, not really intending to beat it or anything. But after the first two missions I was kind of blown away by how amazing it still is so I kept at it. So now I'm thinking of doing a Looking Glass marathon of sorts with this, Thief 2 and maybe System Shock 2 after.

Hell, I might even finally get around to playing Deadly Shadows.

Forgot to respond to this. I meant stuff like the Arkham games, Deus Ex: HR and Alpha Protocol. I can cope with those because it's easy to get a grip on the mechanics (plus, AP has the really handy cloaky stuff and it's easy enough to shoot your way out, while DE:HR has a cloaking ability) and you can safely manoeuvre about, picking people off without having to worry about resources and whatnot (for the most part). TLoU is just a lot more complex and demanding. Not bad, per se, but takes some adapting. I seem to be getting the hang of it, though there was a particularly annoying wave-respawn moment and other times where it can be a bit directionless, where you get through and then discover you have to kill everyone to progress.

Which specific moment? To me, there were three moments that did feel out of place for The Last of Us. I don't want to spoil anything, but for the most part you really could run away from enemies and progress just fine. It would obviously put pressure on yourself to find the exit, and there will be times where you can't progress because button prompts won't appear until enemies lose sight of you.

There have been times where I got past but had to be out in the open to lift a gate and things like that. Not too bad really, but there was an annoying instance of clearing out an area and beginning to loot the place, only to find myself inside a storage cupboard as a newly-spawned enemy approached, leaving no 'clean' exit.

What I mean is that it's never as clear-cut as other games I'm used to.

I picked up a copy of The Witcher 2 on PC, so i'm currently replaying that after initially completing it on my 360 in 2012. Its a beautiful looking game, and the combat feels so much more natural than that of The Witcher (which i played over the last month or two of last year). Dat Kayran.

Are you using the combat mod or are you already too far into the game to start easing it?

I looked at the combat mod released last week, but i've been hearing they're having some compatibly issues with the Steam version of the game; so i continued on without it.
