Mr. GOH!
I played the first five minutes of the original Amnesia. Although that lacked combat, I am told it features far more chase sequences and hiding than Machine for Pigs, and it has an insanity mechanic not present in Machine for Pigs. Never played Dear Esther.
toxicitizen
It's basically a one hour long walking simulator with a narrated story. I liked it but it really wasn't everyone's cup of tea.
Mr. GOH!
Machine For Pigs is longer, but certainly in the same vein. It's pretty decent at being scary, too.
Luftwaffles
I didn't find Amnesia that scary necessarily, just tense. The whole thing was butt-clenchy goodness the whole way through.
TheMightyEthan
I don't think I've ever found a game scary, so for me in the context of games scary = tense.
Mr. GOH!
Tense is the correct word.
Strangelove
Killzone Mercenary is fantastic. Im afraid the graphics hype is going to overshadow the sweetass gameplay. Its so fucking good. Singleplayer has been absolutely fantastic.
toxicitizen
So, I gave Incognita a few runs. First off, they're not joking when they say alpha. There is very little content in it at the moment. There's just the one map. The layout is procedurally generated but it's always the same office level. You also always have the same two guys, a robot engineer and a trenchcoat-wearing spy, and there's no character progression or customization yet. That being said, I find the core mechanics to be pretty damn solid. It's insanely fun considering how little content there's currently in it. I can see this turning into a really great game once they start fleshing it out. My biggest complaint is that you can't rotate the camera. It's a 2D game, though, so I'm not sure if that's something they'll be adding. Also, you move the camera by either holding left-click and moving the mouse (which I don't really like) or with the arrow keys. I really hope they allow rebinding or change it to something more like XCOM because it feels awkward as fuck to constantly have to move my hand to the arrow keys. WASD for camera and numbers for abilities is the way to go. Right now abilities are bound to 1,2,3 and QWERT, which feels kinda weird. Mr. GOH!
The Last of Us. Decent game play so far (very early on yet; just leaving the apartment after getting Ellie), but man, oh, man are the production values high! Looks great, feels great, and even though the story seems like a pretty standard post-zombie-apocalyptic romp, I can tell it will be quite an enjoyable ride. So Ellie's immune, or her blood holds the cure or secret to the resistance to the plague, right? No need to confirm; it just seems obvious that's what's going on. The gameplay didn't click (lolpun) for me until a fair way in, after a few upgrades.
Mr. GOH!
Is TLoU supposed to be easy if you stealth the whole time? I'm about 6ish hours in and have oodles of weapons and ammo. I like the game a lot, though there have been a couple of frustrating sections where I tried stealth and got stuck at a dead end only to realize I needed to kill all the enemies in the area. Love all the unique art assets in the game. Good environmental design and art makes such a huge difference.
Faiblesse Des Sens
What difficulty are you playing on?
staySICK
I played on normal and stealthed the hell out of it. Only a few times I didn't, mainly with some of the larger zombie hordes. Later in the game the flame thrower became my best friend for those, stealthing kept the ammo in supply.
CorgiShinobi
If you do stealth, you'll end up with a lot of ammo. I found myself rarely thinking I needed more ammo, though I also balanced my ammo count between weapons. It came down to keeping a good stock on shivs and always keeping a bottle or brick on me. I'm sure anyone who took a more action approach found themselves more reliant on finding ammo, though because enemies could drop ammo too, I don't think it was as desperate as it was made out to be. Well, depending on your difficulty level that is because it does drastically alter how you can play.
toxicitizen
I tend to always go for stealth in games whenever it's an option, so TLoU was no different. But I still found myself needing to keep track of ammo. It might've been because I hadn't played a console shooter in quite a while so my aim was godawful. The game was still kind of easy, though. toxicitizen
Well, now that I'm done with TLoU it's time to go back to Outlast. I can tell I'm very close to the end but I played last night and had to stop after only an hour because my heart was fucking racing. It's fun but also very draining. So, tonight I'm being a pussy and hesitating to play. What's impressive is, while the game does have jump scares, it doesn't rely on them to be scary. It just has a very tense atmosphere and keeps putting you in frantic situations. I don't know if it lives up to the dev's claim of "scariest game ever made", but it's certainly the scariest I've played. Faiblesse Des Sens
If you (or anyone in this thread) were playing TLoU on normal then of course it's fucking easy. Normal is the new easy.
Saturnine Tenshi
Today I spent an insane 45g (out of 145g) in Guild Wars 2 in order to equip my main lasserine with some absolutely adventitious town attire. I can't use it in combat or anything, but I bought the cook's outfit and magic broom. The broom is neat in that you can ride it around town—or wherever you want to look like a magical witch girl and aren't in combat. The cook's outfit is race-based, so mine is all leaves, which is neat. Leaves look spruce, fittingly. The included frying pan comes with some entertaining costume brawl skills. One of which starts a grease fire. It's not very effective. Also playing Rogue Legacy here and there. It's best in bursts, I think.
Hot Heart
If you (or anyone in this thread) were playing TLoU on normal then of course it's fucking easy. Normal is the new easy. I found the Normal difficulties on Uncharted 3 and TLoU a little more challenging than other games. Not really tough, but not a pushover as such. Difference with TLoU is it doesn't get much harder as it goes because you're getting more stuff and fairly useful skills to help. Halo 4's normal was also more like the hard difficulty that Bungie recommended for experienced players. Didn't help that I hated most of the new weapons and there never seemed to be enough goddamn ammo. Oh, and regarding the actual thread topic, I started playing a fun game, by this small Scottish developer. You might've heard of it. GTA V? toxicitizen
Uncharted 3 wasn't challenging overall, imho, but I vaguely remember it having some completely fucking random difficulty spikes. Everything would be going well and then you'd get stuck on some arbitrary combat section for no reason whatsoever. Saturnine Tenshi
That capsized vessel where you fight in a theatre gave me a bit of trouble.
toxicitizen
Yeah, that was probably the worst one. I also had some trouble in an area outside the ruined mansion. Those are the only two that come to mind right now but I'm sure there were a few more. Those spikes are the one major complaint I remember hearing a lot when the game came out. TheMightyEthan
All of the Uncharted games had really bad difficulty spikes, but I thought they got better about them as the series went on. Actually, in that regard I thought Golden Abyss (not developed by Naughty Dog) was the best. Not the best overall, certainly, but it didn't have the stupid difficulty spikes. toxicitizen
The only spikes I remember in Uncharted 2 were at the very end, with those blue assholes. And at least that was the end of the game. I mean, it was still a difficulty spike but it makes more sense to me to have it there than at arbitrary points throughout the campaign. Damnit, this thread is kinda making me want to play U2 and U3 again...
