Dishonored. Pretty nice and I find myself knocking people out more often than not. Reasoning is that they are my countrymen that my dear emperess tried to protect but there will be no mercy if I come across those aligned with the assassins.

I think I just hyped myself up.

Splinter Cell HD.  I was trying to play it on PC, but the shadows don't work right on modern hardware so your only option is to use really shitty low res ones that look like ass.  So I picked up the PS3 HD trilogy for cheap and am playing it on there instead.  It's got more aliasing than on my PC, but the lighting effects more than make up for it.

How's the performance on the PS3 version? I wanted to get it when it came out but I heard it had some issues. It's like 20 bucks now, though, so if it's not too bad I just might still bite.

On topic, I started playing Dissidia Final Fantasy today. It's one of those games I bought digitally when I still owned a PSP but never got around to actually playing. Figured I might as well start knocking those off the backlog before the same thing happens again. After a few hours, I'm not sure how much I like it.

The story is nonsensical garbage, even by FF standards. And this is coming from someone who still liked FFVIII despite the utterly moronic plot twist. It's still entertaining enough, I guess. I mean, it's not like I had high expectations to begin with.

Then there's the gameplay. It's definitely fun but fights randomly seem to go from over in 10 seconds to "WHAT THE FUCK HOW DID HE EVEN DO THAT WHY AM I NOT DEALING DAMAGE?!?". I'm talking wanting to hurl my Vita at the wall levels of infuriating. A big part of it I think is because the combat system is so convoluted that you don't really understand what the hell you're even doing wrong or why things aren't doing what you expect them to. It's simple enough to get a good grasp on the basic core mechanics but every now and then a fight will feel so unfair and broken that it feels like either the game is cheating or there's something fundamental you're not getting.

There's definitely potential for me to love the game but at this point it's still uncertain whether or not I will.

Got back into Don't Starve. Man, Paleolithic life is tough. I need some Neolithic niceties. I need to find some crap so I can make a farm. I need food security before I can do anything major like building multiple camps. Also not like I can import berry bushes since I don't have crap to fertilize with... with that said, the berry bushes will get exhausted soon.

Also I refuse to look at the wiki for any new things since last I played, which was almost a year ago. I wonder if animal husbandry is a thing... also I wonder if I can easily murder the birds. Their eggs looks mighty nice.

It runs at a fairly consistent framerate, I'd estimate about 30 fps. There have been a couple times that it suffered some low framerates, but I can only think of two so far and neither one was at a critical point where it affected me trying to play the game.

*Edit* - To give "so far" some context, I'm on the 4th of 9 levels.

Muramasa Rebirth. I expected I'd be making this post in the games you beat thread since I finished Kisuke's campaign earlier tonight. But it turns out Momohime's has a completely different story and she starts on the opposite side of the map. Think she has different bosses, too. So I guess I'm only halfway through. That's pretty damn cool because I am loving the hell out of this game.

If Vanillaware's games are all this good, I think they just became one of my favorite studios. I'll definitely be grabbing Dragon's Crown once I'm done with this one.

Tales of Xillia. It's surprisingly good. The story is decent enough to interest me and the battle system is a lot of fun. It has towns and shops and people and side missions. Im also surprised by the dialogue. A lot of it is pretty good, especially for a jrpg. Its also ridiculously easy. Ive been playing it for about 10 hours and Ive yet to die.

That being said, it still has the same problems every other so-so jrpg has had in the last 10-15 years.

Big empty boring fields for battling inbetween towns.

Having a little girl with magic powers in your party.

Having a wise old man in your party.

Awkward physical Japanese humor.

Overly complicated battle system that at the end ends up being as simple as any jrpg from 1991.

Thats debatable if its a bad thing though, since there is that option to be a total badass if you learn all the ins and outs of the battle system. So far Ive had no need for it.
And enemies who loom around and act all mysterious and say vague shit during cutscenes. Sometimes they attack you, sometimes they dont. Other games do this too, but jrpgs almost ALWAYS have to do this. I think the Japanese think that mysterious villains saying vague shit is totally going to get me into the game, its going to drive me forward and Im going to wanna die to find out whats going on. Its not. Its stupid.

Well I just finished Splinter Cell HD on PS3 yesterday and moved on to Pandora Tomorrow HD.  I'm really enjoying myself.  I got the collection when it first came out in 2011, but made it only like halfway through the first level of Splinter Cell before losing my mind because of how slow it was.  I'm not sure what the difference is, other than maybe I just wasn't in the right mood for it two years ago.  The only other thing I can think of is that maybe I was trying to hard to be completely stealthy, whereas this time I've been having a slightly more aggressive approach (nowhere near as aggressive as Conviction, but not trying to leave everyone completely undisturbed either), which makes the game go a lot faster, with a lot less sitting, waiting, moving, getting seen, loading a save, sitting, waiting again, though it's still definitely not a fast game.

Jumping back into Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition.

How many people here have beaten the game? I'm pondering whether I want to continue on with the game or focus on other games in my backlog. I definitely make progress, but it's the slow and frustrating kind. I've played for about three hours and I'm only at the part around that metal boar. What probably doesn't help is that I'm not familiar with what all the different numbers and icons represent.

Otherwise I've been occasionally jump onto Super Mario 3D World. Definitely fun, but I wish I had some multiplayer buddies. Same goes for Rust, which yes I bought into an alpha, but it's very interesting and satisfying for a game not fully built. I've put it on hold until the zombies are gone. They will chase you none stop until you kill them, but then an actual player might take the chance to kill you afterwards.

I still haven't beat Dark Souls. I'm at the part where I need to kill the last couple of bosses and I just haven't had the time to sit down and work on my skills for each one again. Whenever I've gone back I've just gone exploring.

Yeah, I started it over last fall thinking I'd play it on and off and finish it before Dark Souls II came out. But DSII is right around the corner and I'm starting to realize that it's kind of a daunting game to just jump right back into. Especially since I had just reached Sen's Fortress and my last memories are of getting my ass absolutely kicked.

Well, I guess I was also in that early exploration phase but it really felt like I was under-leveled. Also, you mentioned the last couple bosses. Is Sen's Fortress really close to the end or something? If so, that'd be kind of a big motivator to make myself get back into it.

I decided to get back into Dark Souls tonight, and I've done good for myself (with some luck). Only problem I'm running into is that I'm getting lost. Not sure which direction to take. I'll probably find a good walkthrough to guide me to places. I've gotten to the part of Undead Parish where I can get to Darkroot and even found my way back to the beginning area with the three NPCs.

Well, you guys made me want to do the same so I fired up Dark Souls this afternoon. Guess I wasn't under-leveled after all since I managed to make it through the first chunk of Sen's Fortress, up to a bonfire and boss. My damage on it seemed decent so I expect I'll be able to defeat it tonight, when I get back from class.

Just pick a place that seems intriguing and go there. If it's too dangerous, go somewhere else. No need for a guide for that, really. The game is pretty good at subtly guiding you like that. If enemies one-shot you, that's a pretty good indicator you probably shouldn't be there. The only times I feel a guide is called for is for certain really useful items that you might otherwise miss.

Downloaded DMC because of PS+. I kind of see why purists wouldnt like it because while theres a lot of old DMC stuff in here, but theres also a lot of new stuff that DMC has never done and most of the time its not for the better. The good thing about this game are the old things that used to work, the new stuff the introduced is inferior so far. I just dont care for it.

That being said, its still DMC for the most part, its still fun to play.

Well, what I didn't notice was the path to the right of the sealed gate in Darkroot Garden. That's why I was getting lost because Basin was obviously tougher with the the Golems. Was thinking of going back to the Asylum, but I'm suspecting that the tougher enemies will be MUCH tougher. Without a guide, I wouldn't have found the Bonfire in Darkroot and would have to start from the very beginning with the Bonfire by the blacksmith.
