I played about half of MGS1 and MGS2 and watched let's play videos of the rest of 2 and all of 4. I mean, watching a let's play of 4 is not much different than 'playing' it.

Oh, come on! Now you're just being silly. The gameplay is the best part of MGS4. Even an hardcore MGS fan like me got sick of the cutscenes in that game after a couple playthroughs.

Honestly, GOH, at this point it just sounds like you simply don't like MGS all that much. I'm really not surprised that MGS3 would be the one you'd still find enjoyable despite that. It's the least MGS-ey MGS game, if that makes any sense.

I had an okay time with MGS1 as a teenager, but I only played MGS2 after MGS3 and it just was not as good. I don't hate MGS at all; I respect the series and understand that it's not to everyone's taste. I just think most folks would prefer MGS3 to the others. And given Ethan's hesitancy to try MGS based on earlier games not aging well, I think he should try the HD version of MGS3. I think the core systems of MGS3 have aged pretty darn well, and that MGS3 is a rollicking good time with fun stealth, great level design, and wonderful bosses.

FFX. Someone said it looked like a PS3 jrpg. Theyre all kinds of right. FFX looked fantastic back on the PS2 and sadly, Japanese developers havent gotten better since. Aside from FF13, PS3 and 360 JRPGS ALL look like hd PS2 games. Most Japanese games in general really.

Anyways...

This game is LONG. I forgot it was so long. The difficulty also ramps up in the last 4th of the game out of nowhere.

Its still as fun as I remember it though. And normally Id stick around to do all the side stuff, but I really want to mov eon to FFX-2. Honestly, I might just not finish FFX at all and just go to FFX-2.

Theres a boss or 2 before Gagazet that are a bit difficult, but yes. Seymour at Gagazet is ridiculous. And the encounter rate is stupid too. Up to that point you can go through the game without grinding. Now they either force you to grind, or that you have all your aeons fully charged into overdrive. Or to have certain abilities already learned. Im sure there are a lot of people who didnt have trouble here, but if your characters havent learned the right abilities and youre not in the right level, its pretty much impossible. And from there all the bosses are difficult. Not so much in that theyre strong(though they are), but because they start using more and more status effects and counters.

The game is just so easy before that. I had 99 potions, hi-potions and phoenix downs just saved up. From talking to people and enemy drops. Still have about 400,000 gil. I just never spend it. You dont need it. And then you do.

That being said, Im not complaining. I just wish the curve wasnt so messed up.

Also, the HD remaster doesnt have a cutscene skip function. God does this game need a skip cutscene function. Once the game delves deep into the love story aspect of it, the dialogue just gets longer and more groan worthy. Yuna's monologues are the worst. Theyre way more embarrassing than I remember them being.

Thank god the battle system is awesome and the story for the most part is pretty cool too. Plus, Auron. Auron is awesome.

Just dive into MGS3 first, Ethan. Do it!

No, Cowboy! Bad Cowboy!

edit: Goddamnit, you guys. No. It's the first chronologically but the series is meant to be played in release order. There's a lot of self references and the continuity is built to be best understood in that order.

Shhh! I purposely gave Ethan bad advice because he's Ethan.

I said I wasnt going to do all the FFX side stuff, but I totally am. I really shouldnt. At the end of the day, its all just a bunch of grinding. Beating all these "tough" superbosses isnt really an accomplishment because these fights tend to be extremely cheap. Each boss either has some sort of weakness to exploit or they dont and the only thing that makes them a superboss is their huge amount of hp. The battle takes forever. Thats basically what makes it a superboss.

And doing all the side stuff to get the celestial weapons? The monster arena? The chocobo race? 200 Lightning dodging ?Blitzball? Its not even fun to do. Its a total pain in the ass. (I actually do like blitzball, but you shouldnt be forced to do it.

Im not sure why Im drawn to such empty shit like this.

The sphere distiller items and abilities are really useful. You dont have to run out of spheres so often.

I chose expert grid, but I think it was too much for me. My characters were all over the place. Its too unruly for me. Not a fan.

Dark Aeons are a bunch of bulls**t though. Not because theyre difficult, but because they placed them in the most random yet inconvenient of places. The one in Besaid for example will lock you out of a Jecht sphere and a destruction sphere(if you didnt get it the first time).

Luckily I was able to Yojimbo his ass. Its just annoying that you dont even have a choice to fight them. You either walk in to a new place and get challenged or you talk to a stranger and get challenge. They dont ask.

Other than that? Its pretty cool. Its about the same really. Doesnt feel that different.

For the Jecht sphere youd have to walk all the way back to Besaid since the Jecht spheres dont appear until after you get to Macalania, which is way before you get the airship. Macalania to Besaid on foot? I wasnt about to do that.

And you can buy items or learn an ability that makes enemies drop a particular sphere(mana, power, ability, whatever). In the US version youd run out very quickly.

Started FFX-2 yesterday. I forgot how much content it has. Lots of stuff to do.

Also, the new(to me) psychic dressphere is awesome. Its basically my main one right now, at least til I get dark knight. The Festivalist one isnt that great though. I just dont really like it.

Also, the creature creator just seems like too much. i think Im going to ignore it completely. Anyone who has played this think its worth it? I know you can play with some pretty cool characters from FFX, but...eh.

Also, I find it funny that Yuna gets treated only slightly above a regular person. In comparison, maesters seemed to be treated better in FFX, with more reverence. It's in her character to not want special treatment though, so I guess its not a big deal.

Honestly, the FFX party should get WHATEVER they want. They should be set for life. They saved the world by stopping a thousand year old enemy. But in FFX-2 some people still tell Yuna they cant go somewhere or do some things. Its ri-goddamn-diculous.

Still working my way through Thief and enjoying it a lot but my progress has slowed down the past couple days. Reason for that is my copy of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls got here friday morning. I initially didn't really want to jump into it until I was done with Thief, DX: The Fall and maybe Burial at Sea 2, but I still fired it up just to give the Crusader class a quick try and it just sucked me right back in.

I enjoyed the game back at launch and I haven't played in a while but playing it now just feels so much better than I remember. Loot drops are a lot more satisfying, I think I've actually seen more legendaries in this run alone than I have in the 100+ hours I put into the game two years ago. I'm already halfway through the original campaign and will probably do Act III tomorrow. Really looking forward to Act V as I heard it's a massive improvement over the original campaign. The maps being properly generated is a major plus, it's a shame they couldn't retroactively change the first four acts to be that way. The way all areas kept the same map outline and orientation with all the major locations always in the same spots and only the inner landscape and secondary stuff changing was a big part of what made me lose interest back then. Well that and the complete lack of progression for someone like me who wasn't all that into grinding dozens of hours just for a better helmet...

Fire Emblem Awakening

Its my second attempt at getting into this game, and whilst it's got the makings of a very good game, I just can't 'find the time' to play it. I wonder if that means I've subconsciously decided I don't like it or not. I've already lost a few guys, and I'm not all that far into the game. I'm enjoying the battles, but they're certainly not the prettiest things you'll see, not even for a 3DS title.

If the games cutscenes were all as beautiful as some of the hand drawn art they sometimes throw at you, I'd probably be more eager to play this game, they're that good; unfortunately they're not.

I'll see if I can give the game another hour or two this evening, but in all honesty I think its destined for a trade in.
