NHL15 and Destiny.

NHL15 is thoroughly underwhelming, although I guess that depends on just how much you knew going in. I spend most of my time playing ranked matches online, and you can almost feel the game deciding who's going to win at any given moment. It's sluggish, the basic act of moving players around feels heavy; and lets not get started on the god-awful goaltending.

I knew the game was lacking in value, but once again I find myself complaining about the awful PvP stuff. Fool me once EA...

I'm playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. I'm slightly annoyed with myself as I promised myself I'd finish A Link to the Past first but for whatever reason I can't seem to get on with that game (I seem to run out of steam when I get to the dark world).

Really enjoying this new one though. I kept going past places and thinking I'll have to come back here when I have [weapon] to access that bit but my memory is miles too pants for that so I found a patch of grass by the bee dude and kept catching bees until I could buy all the weapons. I'm telling myself that's not cheating though it may make the game a bit shorter that's no bad thing in my mind. I just now got to Lorule so I guess this is the big test but I feel it will pass with flying colours.

I was doing another hassle hardcore mode run in Fallout New Vegas but after the game crashed in Boulder City every time I load my auto or quick saves it gets stuck forever on the loading screen.

So I guess it's back to the Come Fly with Me quest I go. Ho hum.

edit: my quick save finally loaded so now I can hardcore post-apoc walking simulator again \o/

Endless Legend is an interesting Civilization-like 4x game set in a fantasy (sci fi?) world, and it was made by the same folks who made Endless Space. It's also set in the same universe as Endless Space, which is odd, but it works.

The game is somewhat of a mashup Civ 5 and the terrible Fallen Enchantress game, though everything Fallen Enchantress got wrong, Endless Legend gets right. Unlike many Cov-like games, the game world in EL is plit up into dozens of discrete regions with predefined borders. Each region has a specific climate and associated biomes; so a sub arctic region might have tundra, cold forests, and cold plains, while a desert region will have mesas, rocky hills, waste, and flood plains. The regions are large; if it were Civ 5, I'd build maybe three or four cities in the alrger regions, while smaller island regions would, in a Civ map, only support a single city.

Importantly, you can only build a single city within each region. That city can exploit any strategic or luxury resources within the region, once the right tech has been researched. Each city can only directly get food, industrial points, and money from hexes within its smallish work radius (rather than from any hex in the region), and there is a city building that extends the radius. So you must think about where to place a city in a given region so you have a good mix of industrial points, gold, and tech points, as well as access to special tiles with resource bonuses.

The setting and races are done very well and each is quite distinct, with different military units, victory conditions, and play styles. Each race has a unique victory condition you meet by completing what amount to quests that tell the basic story of your ruler and race. The world is a mashup between fantasy and sci fi and is, technically, post apocalyptic. Like in Endless Space, in Endless Legend, an ancient interstellar Empire (the Endless) ruled everything in the distant past before falling to an unknown cataclysm before recorded history. Each race's victory quest in EL somehow deals with the Endless and the aftermath of their fall.

The design and concept of each race is interesting and refers to standard fantasy tropes while also twisting them or using them in fun ways. For example, one of the factions is essentially stereotypical knights in shining armor, paladins, and fills the stereotypical Good race role, except instead of being knights in shining armor they are cursed and doomed souls of a good kingdom that turned to a sort of vampirism and are now bound in to their armor; no flesh remains. So they're undead, but still attempting to be noble, and pure, and true despite needing to chow down on innocents' souls every once in awhile.

I am also fond of the dragonkind race, which is composed of ardent pacifists; they gain victory points by avoiding warfare, even though the race is literally huge fire-breathing dragons.

There's a lot more I like about the game, but I'll wrap this post up.

I would suggest it to any fan of 4x games.

I got it to tide me over to Civ: BE, to be honest. But it's different enough from Civ that I think it will be a good appetizer. It's much easier to get your head around than Endless Space, and you don't have nearly as much stuff to keep track of. But if you like 4x games, I do suggest you get it at some point. I think it's probabl;y a better game than Endless Space, as much as I love space empire sims. The very substantial differences between races really improves replayability.

That's a damn expensive appetizer.

It's $35. I had a code for $10 off and got it for $25. Less than two tickets to see a movie. About the cost of an appetizer and a drink when I'm out with friends. Totally worth it.

Yeah, $25 is just about right. I'll let this one slide.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

Still a little unsure to be honest. I've put maybe 2 hours into the game; I'm having fun, but at the same time I wish the game was a tiny bit more helpful with regards to clues and the like. I spent 20 minutes looking for a rock previously, and that was just frustrating. That being said, the story has me hooked; and it looks and sounds incredible.

Resident Evil 6.

Just finished Leon's campaign. Good God, this is supposed to be the "traditional, atmospheric" one of the bunch? Similar to RE4?! Hahahaha, okay, Capcom. Clearly you have no idea what the hell you're doing anymore. Or, maybe you just don't understand what it is you used to do. Either way, the only word I can use to describe the game so far is excess. People have been complaining that the series is devolving into action for years but it is fucking absurd to point at this campaign and say: "This is the atmospheric one!". That's not what atmospheric is and any comparison to RE4 is completely unjustified.

That being said, fuck me, the game is actually pretty damn fun! It's fucking awful but still fun as hell. It's not broken or anything but I dunno, something about the faster movement feels kinda janky to me. I mean, even though I loved Resident Evil 5, I understand why people had issues with it. So when I say that RE6 makes RE5 look like a goddamn masterpiece by comparison, you know something's very wrong here. But hey, at least the story is the same good old cheesy schlock I know and love and that's good enough for me. Oh and I almost didn't notice at first but it's kinda nice to have the traditional zombies back. Now if only the game was a little creepier...

Anyway, I'm not sure which campaign to play next. I was thinking Chris but apparently the recommended order is Leon->Jake->Chris? I mean, I've seen the chronological list of all the chapters but fuck that, I'm not jumping from one campaign to the next every two chapters.

What should I play next?

Some quick explanations:

Awesomeauts, Chiv, Natty Selection 2, and CS: GO are for playing w/ friends.

Dark Souls: I have like 2 more Lord Vessels left

Bioshock Infinite: Just the DLC as I beat this when it came out.

Stalker: Would need to get back into it. 10-15 hours in.

The Walking Dead: Actually, I need to buy the 2nd game, since I just installed it to play the in-between episode.

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

Holy crap it's like a brand new game.  There's so many new items that combine with each other in so many crazy ways that you never know what you're going to end up with.  I collected a charge shot, bloody shot, and pulse shot in my last run that ended up turning my wimpy little tears into giant bloody vomit chunks that could kill a boss in four or five hits.  On top of that, I picked up a piggy bank item which spawns coins every time you get hit, and a familiar who picks up money off the ground and then spawns special items.  For a brief period, I felt like a god.
