toxicitizen
I quit Mark of the Ninja after the first level. I just did not like it one bit. You're a bad person. Also, why? I kinda want to say it gets better and that that's too early to write it off but without knowing what it is you disliked about it then it's hard to say for sure. I mean, I know you like stealth games and I can't imagine how a fan of stealth games could possibly not love MotN.

madbassman39
So I started to play some Shadowrun Returns, since I bought it longer than I can remember. I really am enjoying it, and I think I might really like these old school style RPGs. The slow burn makes it feel like an interactive book that I can just kill some time with after work and other people are using the TV. Honestly I liked Xcom and wanted more of that and Shadowrun was not what I thought it was going to be. I'm glad, but it took me some time to get used to it. I tend to like more action-y "hit X to attack" style games but this is working for me right now.
Strangelove
Is Far Cry 3 supposed to be satire or just the complete encapsulation of the white man power fantasy? I cant tell. Either way, now that I upgraded most of my stuff, the game is fun. Before that, it was a real drag.
TCP
It's the opposite of Assassin's Creed with "this game was developed by a multicultural team of multiple faiths". Far Cry 3 is "this game was developed by white dudes".

CorgiShinobi
I'm not sure if it's so much satire instead of "rich white kid is having the worst day ever and has to become a killer to save his preppy friends." Then you get into the whole "become a warrior" (with some booty incentive) which culminates in friendship versus ultimate warrior (and booty). Right, but I think the tone of a lot of it is definitely parody/satire/making fun of cliches sort of stuff. Doesn't mean it's consistent but it's there. Anyway I've been playing through RAGE. Oh man I'd totally download a higher-res texture pack (lulz at like 75 GB) if I could because while it has some of the best looking vistas I've ever seen in a game some of it just looks odd and inconsistent up close. They could probably just use that same tech early this gen and be fine it has so much potential.

Yeah, it's not necessarily good satire, but it is satire. *Edit* - Though I also doubt that video game audiences are the most eager to look beyond face value. Even the "critics", who are mostly just gamers who managed to get a gig writing about games. I don't expect this kind of analysis out of the gaming press because I'd argue most of them aren't critics in the real sense, they're reviewers. They evaluate a product for consumers, which definitely has its value but is ultimately fucking boring. I find that real critics take a deeper approach to interpreting every aspect of games (story, mechanics, systems, design, how they all mesh together, etc) and that's infinitely more interesting to me than "game is hella fun, no bugs, 10/10". It's been a while but I don't really recall anyone I consider a real critic covering or praising FC3 all that much.

Mal
On Tomb Raider now. Jesus Christ, what a terrible way to die. If these death scenes are not an incentive to not die then I don't know what to think.

Mister Jack
Wolfenstein: The New Order. I originally overlooked this game but I bought it on a whim during a Black Friday sale and it's turning out to be an unexpected gem. On the surface it just looks like a generic run-of-the-mill shooter like all the others, and to some extent it is, but while playing the game you can tell that id was less concerned with pushing the envelope than they were about just making it fun as hell to shoot nazis. The game has a lot of things you've seen a million times like stealth, dual wielding, perks, alt fire, and turrets, but it does each of these things so well that I don't even care that it's not original. They didn't reinvent the wheel, but they did make it better. I'm having more fun with this game than I ever did with any Call of Duty campaign. It's just dumb, mindless nazi killing action and I love it. Also health and armor packs are a thing again. Health does regenerate but only to the nearest multiple of 20, so if your health is down to 35 it won't go any higher than 40 without a med kit. TheMightyEthan
That kind of health regen is my favorite: 4 or 5 blocks, and each block will regen unless it's completely emptied. It gives you enough of a buffer at the end that you're not ever just completely fucked, while still having some damage persistence.
Mister Jack
I agree. I think the first game I played that did that was Resistance, and I find it to be a really nice compromise between old school and new school design. Regenerating health ala most modern shooters is rather lazy and encourages unbalanced enemy configurations, but I always hated having to save every two minutes in Doom because I only had five health left.
CorgiShinobi
The only complaints I have for Wolfenstein: The New Order are that BJ feels a bit clunky and it's hard to keep an eye on your health. I like the regen for health, but I've run into a few times where my health was taking a deep drop before I realized all my armor was gone and I was at a 20-40 range. Three times I had to evade and shoot because I ended up with 20 health in a few seconds. Otherwise it's great fun, and like Jack is saying, it doesn't reinvent the wheel, but I would say it makes the FPS genre fun again. Also, I want to say the game doesn't take itself seriously, but it does a great job with presentation and cinematic scenes.
Mister Jack
Yeah the presentation is great. In fact, I rarely say this but I think the game could potentially make a great thriller/action movie. I dig the whole "what if the nazis won because they had robots?" concept. I can't think of many films that do the super nazi angle.
Baconrath
Been playin dat Link Between Worlds. Only problem so far is how they make the minigame with the Poes right before getting the Master Sword easier after I had messed up the these-three-Poes-are-wrong a couple of times. II know the reasoning behind it is obvious and I agree with it, but it made me go "Awww..."
