P4: Gritty Reboot
Played some more Last Night on Earth over the past couple of evenings. It's a fantastic thematic.
P4: Gritty Reboot
Picked up lots of new games over the past month and a half, mostly at thrift or on the cheap: Carcassonne - $3 Survive! - $1 Knizia's Lord of the Rings - Traded for a few thrifted games worth ~$6 Munchkin - $1.50 Wits & Wagers - $1.35 Sorry! Sliders - $2.70 10 Days in Africa - $1.50 I'd recommend most of these to anyone getting into board/card gaming. Lord of the Rings in particular is grand. Johnny
I've fallen behind a lot on writing stuff here haven't I. Oh well, I'll deal with it when I find time. For right now, here's an updated picture of (most) of my collection. Missing is Hive: Pocket Edition and my Magic The Gathering cards. Also, a strong recommendation to anyone who likes collectible card games to try Android: Netrunner. It's the best.
P4: Gritty Reboot
I will post a picture of my collection once I get it all together. For now it's spread among the front closet, the bedroom closet, and the trunk of my car.
fuchikoma
Axe Cop? My god... How random is that?
P4: Gritty Reboot
Munchkin is about as discriminate with the licenses they take on as Nicolas Cage is with film roles.
fuchikoma
I mean that a game based on this would be as random as Calvinball.
Johnny
I just wish the Axe Cop license had been used to make a good game instead of yet another Munchkin re-theme. And I bought it so I am part of the problem.

deanb
My housemate has been following the Kingdom of Loathing kickatarter. They've well surpassed goals so stretch goals means rhe game's several hundred cards strong now.
Johnny
I think you're talking about "Mr. Card Game"? Doesn't look very interesting to me. Deck building games are simply the current flavour of the month and this one doesn't seem to be doing anything to differentiate itself from current offerings. P4: Gritty Reboot
I think it should offer a nice option for fans of the art style. I haven't played any deckbuilders yet as none have jumped out at me. Maybe if I find the right theme.
Johnny
The popular deck builders (NOTE: This is different from Collectible Card Games where you build a deck outside of the game and then play with that deck!) include: Eminent Domain Puzzle Strike Dominion Thunderstone Advance Nightfall Ascension
P4: Gritty Reboot
Last Night on Earth + Mall Madness mashup that we played last night. Some of the rules were a little slippery so we had to adjust them a few times, but it made for a great story. Rules are available here for anyone interested in trying it out.
TheMightyEthan
So you were basically playing Dawn of the Dead: The Boardgame?
P4: Gritty Reboot
Yeah, in the rulebook they say that Dawn of the Dead was one of their main inspirations.
P4: Gritty Reboot
Generous gift from my parents this Christmas. Also, I'm renaming this thread to "P4 talks to himself about board games".
deanb
I don't know enough about "alternative" board games to join in. I guess as n when cash rolls in I at least have a group of folks up in Newcastle that'd probably be into that kind of stuff though (especially since they seem pretty keen on Munhckin)
P4: Gritty Reboot
Haha, it's not that I mind; I've got BoardGameGeek for board game discussion. I just share my flavor of the month here on occasion and I'm ok with that. By the by, your Newcastle pals may like The Resistance, which is cheap and can even be played with a deck of playing cards. deanb
Huh, did a google. Saw a copy of this in Travelling Man when checking if there was anything for like a fiver to pick up for random fun times while at mums over Xmas. (Turns out except for 52-card decks, that's a no). Google also suggests it used to be able to be played with a regular 52-card deck, but not any more. I guess making a game that can be done with standard cards isn't very profitable. I'll suggest it. I think Munchkin expansions seem to be the main additions up to now, and then shifting onto...errr. Can't remember, a D&D-like but not Pathfinder. I think maybe space orientated. I have Xmas spending money, so I'll see.
P4: Gritty Reboot
I have played it with a deck of playing cards recently; you just don't get "The Plot Thickens" expansion functionality. Deal out red cards for spies; black for Resistance, then stack black and red separately in the middle for pass/fail cards. Vote for teams with thumbs up/thumbs down. (There is a good YouTube video on all this, but I can't find it right now). In any case it's not all that expensive if you end up grabbing it. Great social/introductory game. TheMightyEthan
I wanna talk about Risk: Legacy some more from P4's status: From reading about it you put stickers over the board, write down your own countries names, tear up the cards it comes with (which you've mentioned yourself) and there's several single use packets to open up randomly in each box. It doesn't sound like a game where you put the pieces back in the box n fold the board up. But that seriously is the whole point, to play it more than once. It's just that you should be playing it more than once with the same people, not on somebody else's board. Stickers on the board from previous games give bonuses/penalties in subsequent games, cards get removed from the deck as they're destroyed, your copy of the game evolves and becomes unique over multiple play sessions. deanb
I get that it's the point, I just don't feel comfortable with a £50 boardgame that's severely limited in use. I'm someone who takes good care of things, a game that asks you to write on your board game, tear up the playing pieces and so on just really rubs me the wrong way.
TheMightyEthan
Oh I totally agree. Like I said, I could never actually destroy the cards, I'd just have to put them in a special "destroyed cards" bag. Also apparently it's a lot more expensive there, cause I could get it from Amazon for $46, or ~£28.
deanb
Yeah, certain boardgames end up super expensive here. Cards Against Humanity sells here for £35 ($60), but $25 in the US. VAT only accounts for so much.
