Your past/present PC woes

Present: Contacted EA Support about the pack I should've been awarded, following a Mass Effect 3 weekend event. Same thing has happened before.

Only this time, I get the pack and go to redeem it, only for the game to hang and disconnect me. When I log back in to multiplayer, EVERYTHING has been reset. Characters, guns, gear: everything

FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

Hoping they can restore something server side, since the manifest still works on the site.

Worst for me is what I'm assuming is some insidious static issue. I've had it since building my wife's PC and still cannot figure out what's causing it. Even went about buying a new PSU. Sometimes (often) it won't turn on without me fiddling with the wires.

I had the same issue when it just wouldn't turn on. It was a problem with my PSU, there wasn't enough power I'm thinking. It was one of the generic ones.

What I had to do was unplug a component (DVD Drive, Video Card) then boot, then put them back in then boot. I don't know why that works but I always just had to remove a component (that draws power) and then put them back in.

Once I got a new (well now old, but still being used) one, I never got the problem again.

But it was soooo frustrating before. Didn't have any other computer at that time so I was cut off from the 'net!

So now I'll have no Google until I get my next monthly statement and am able to get rid of this goddamn notification.

I was going to suggest Blackle temporarily but what about google+, gmail, and docs? Do you get blocked out from all of google's stuff?

Luckily I can still get to Gmail on my phone. Firefox lets me add an exception as well, but yeah, blocked out from all Google's stuff.

What the hell...

So...you go over and the try to mess with your ability to go on Google?

What about other sites?

If you keep going over...can you just find ways around it(like you have done).

Sounds silly.

My ISP(Mediacom) just blocks my ability to go online outright when I do something they dislike.

I don't have internet!

Well... through the router anyway. I reset it and everything. It works right now when I'm connected to my Modem directly... I don't understand why it's not working when I'm connected to the router...

I can see my WAN IP from the router. It's there. If I plug my PC directly to the modem it works. NOOOO!

But any suggestions? I don't think this is an ISP issue. It's just my router... which suddenly decided to stop giving me internet...

I did the factory reset. It still won't work :(

I used my Old Router, it still works I just replaced it with a new one since it doesn't support wireless N. But it's the same situation. It sees the Modem and I can see my IP address, but it still won't work.

I also cloned the MAC address of my PC to my router. Still no good. Google doesn't help too... hmm...

Is it even possible to restrict a modem to only connect to a PC? I wonder what the hell is going on...

It is possible to restrict the modem to the PC, but that'd typically be by MAC address, so you're good there... If your router's IP were static, it might keep you offline, but I would think if you reset everything, it'd be using DHCP to get an IP from your ISP like you would with just about every provider.

There are other ways besides just MAC addresses. My roommate in college had to do a lot to our router to get it to work since the dorm network was designed to not let people use routers. I don't have any idea what he did, but I know it was more complicated than only spoofing a MAC address.

Thanks for the input!

Can they do that from their side though? Because it was working fine the day before and it wasn't serviced or anything...

Both of my routers are D-link ones running ddwrt. I guess that should take care of one possible suggestion... though I don't have one with stock firmware but I don't think it makes a difference.

I'm gonna give it another go later... I'll try googling the restriction thing through modems maybe it'll help...

Also I guess it's worth mentioning... The first time this was installed, it wouldn't work with the router too. But I just cloned the MAC address of my laptop (the only computer I had at the time and the one they used to configure the modem) and it worked fine. I assumed they were restricting through MAC addresses. But I've kept that setting since then, maybe they did do something...

Present: My sister upgraded her graphics card. She gets a BSOD when she uses certain DVI - VGA adapters (solved it by using a different adapter). Any ideas of why this might have happened? Dodgy adapter maybe? Or a particular type that is causing the card to crap out? I've never seen the like before.

So I called up my ISP, and I explained whats happening...

They asked me to go through the standard network troubleshooting steps everyone asks you to do. Restart the modem etc...

And it worked. So now everything's OK!

But I did that myself yesterday.... :(

Countless times... :(

  • 2 weeks later...

Just had to swap out my Corsair TX750 750 watt PSU for an Antec Earthwatts 650 watt power supply because the more expensive and powerful Corsair PSU kept crapping out on me while I was playing games. RMA for Corsair takes at least three weeks by my calculations, so I just bought the Antec on sale from J&R. I was deathly afraid that the real culprit was low voltage from my wall outlet. Fortuantely, I was able to play games for four hours last night without a hitch.

Gonna RMA the Corsair and sell it; anyone want a $100+ PSU for $50 plus S&H?

I'd take it if I could afford it, just to have it on hand. At this point, half my room is being taken up by different cables and components so one more wouldn't hurt. Alas, I don't have the cash right now. As for as PSU's go, I'm still on the same Thermaltake Toughpower 750w I bought when I built my system. It's been filled with dust, taken apart, left to cook in an oven (my room) and been through a surge or two and still runs just like I bought it.

BSOD

I am currently trying to figure out the cause. It stated yesterday but now its happening every time. Oddly, safe mode worked fine. I wonder if it is my SSD... It is a OCZ and apparently they're shown to be pretty crap.

And its always on startup so its got to be something up during that time.

---

Safe mode indeed seems to work just fine since I am typing from the computer in question. Regularly I seem to crash one minute in once I get to desktop. Any ideas?

Since I am running fine in safe mode, I think my SSD is fine. My RAM should be fine as well. Since I am running well in safe mode, my CPU is fine as well.

So, I think its either some program is causing a crash or my GPU is crapping out... or something entirely different. Help?

---

Still running fine in safe mode. I really think it may be something on startup or soon after startup.

Is this Windows 7?

If it's something at startup, try use system config to disable whatever you think the culprit may be. If safe mode is working fine, you could also try using sfc /scannow to check the system files. If all else fails, using a boot disk might repair the install.

If you think that it might be malware of some kind, doing scans from safe mode is a good idea.

You can get Memtest86+ for free and boot it off a CD or flashdrive. If it fails, it's not definitely your RAM - CPU problems can manifest the same way.

If you think it may be SSD issues, it's worth checking to see if there's a firmware update, and if you have the option, back up before applying it. I did hear a lot of early SSDs with JMicron(?) controllers had issues. FWIW I've had some great luck with Intel's X25 series - they're quite trouble-free, and if you're on Win7 or newer, maintenance-free (TRIM command).

Other than that, if it might be a GPU issue, you can try running benchmarks and burn-in tests to try to trip it up. I really recommend getting a good overall temperature monitor like SpeedFan if it's a homemade PC though, just so you don't cook anything.
