Strangelove
We dont have a general MGS thread, so I figured this is the closest thing to it. Were definitely getting something this year. Its not Revengeance because that comes out next year. I also doubt its only an announcement for next year, because that's not really a "2012" event. I can only assume it's MGS5 or a sidestory for the Vita. I also assume that MGS5 will go multiplatform. Not so much because of the 360 crowd, but because of the Wii U. Having a new MGS game at launch would be good for it. I seriously never understood why Kojima sticks to Sony so much. I can only assume they pay him for it, but he's always seems ridiculously enthusiastic over Sony. He always puts Sony shit in his games as references. That being said, he's also a big Nintendo fan. So if he makes a PS3/Wii U game, he might as well release it for the 360 while he's at it. A Vita game would also work though, it could do for the Vita what MGS4 did for the PS3 - boost some sales. Also, there was a demo for MGS4 running on the Vita when it was stilled called the NGP. The resolution and the framerate would take a hit, the sound quality and some of the textures would also need to be downsized for a cart, but it could definitely do it. The Vita has some ridiculous magical compression. Edited July 11, 2012 by Strangelove
excel_excel
MGS 4 TROPHY PATCH ON THE WAY! WEEE! Only took 4 years but still that's sweet! Here's hoping they put in a full install option and cutscene viewer
TCP
Is it confirmed that they're actually doing MGS5? I thought MGS4 wrapped up the series, but I suppose they could do a prequel again. Though to be honest, I haven't actually played MGS4, so maybe I shouldn't comment. EDIT: never mind Edited July 11, 2012 by TheCowboyPoet

The Vita has some ridiculous magical compression. They'd have to really work to get it that small. That game took up over 32GB of data and that was archived data that had to be installed, so its actual size on a system that doesn't install carts would be even bigger. Faiblesse Des Sens
A lot of that was uncompressed 7.1 audio and video though.
Strangelove
Yeah, its about 30 gb, but if I remember correctly a big portion is all sound files. The game has ridiculously high quality audio. Plus, the game was released in 2008. That was a long time ago, im almost positive that they could make the game again without the installs. Developing a PS3 game in 2007(possibly even since 2006) is way different than developing a game in 2012 on PS3 or Vita. And like I said earlier, Vita games have really high compression. The fact that they can have MGS2 and 3 completely under 4gb is a good indicator of that. Same with with UMvC3 being 1.1gb while on consoles its over 3gb. The quality between the 2 is almost unnoticeable on the good ports. I figure it could fit in a 16gb cart or smaller if they really tried. Good luck downloading it off PSN though. Im trying to go fully digital, but id definitely have to get the cart for this one if it happens. Overall, Im just really suspicious about the recent trophy patch. I seriously doubt anyone would go back to a 4 year old game that has had all online ties to it discontinued and add trophies to it. Its utterly pointless unless theyre a byproduct of something else, like a port. Every game after 2009 HAS to have trophies. It makes sense to just port them over to the PS3 version. Not to mention that Kojima is really pushing his transfarring thing. This would be another use for it. Strangelove
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5IVOs5Pxh8 Beautiful. Just beautiful.Sometimes I feel like Kojima is the only Japanese developer who gives a shit about videogame technology and doing new shit.
excel_excel
That looks pretty damn slick. Guess I'll have to finally play Peace Walker as that's where Paz is introduced isn't it? That looked fantastic though while still looking like something from this generation. In a good way I mean. Can't wait to see how the open world stuff plays out. Also its multiplatform, 360 and PS3, I presume a PC version as well. This takes the wind out of the sails of Revengeance though. That looks almost like a MGS parody compared to this. Edited September 2, 2012 by excel_excel

Yeah, it sure seems that way these days. That video was amazing. I really need to go back to Peace Walker and finish it... I wasn't really far into it before I just kinda lost interest. Think it was because of a boss fight. Edited September 1, 2012 by FLD
Strangelove
It really is about the little things. A pointless detail like this is so unnecessary, but adds so much character. I love it.
Mal
If anybody is going to push the consoles (Specifically the PS3) to their limit, I would think it be Kojima and the other folks behind MGS to do so. MGS4 had everything they could throw at it. Now they could use what they learned there to better the process. So far I am excited. This takes the wind out of the sails of Revengeance though. That looks almost like a MGS parody compared to this. Did anybody every took that game seriously? I sure as hell didn't. Now Ground Zeros... oh my. Then again, Kojima's name has ton of weigh of behind it. Edited September 2, 2012 by MaliciousH
SomTervo
This game is going to have to be a three-disc deal on the 360. There's no way you can pull off that kinda shit on one DVD. But if it is, how exactly does one do an open world game, with one world, over three discs... You guys seen the extended version? There are an extra few minutes at the end, of pure gameplay that are... Gob smacking. http://uk.ign.com/videos/2012/09/01/metal-gear-solid-ground-zeroes-extended-14-minute-demo

And I was amazed by how great it still looks. 4 years old and still looks better than most current games. That's no small feat. SomTervo
MGS4 is really something. The most solid, flexible gameplay, and one of the most solid engines I've ever seen. Just a huge, giant shame that the actually gameplay amounts to <6 or 7 hours. If he had added one or two measly little levels or areas, that tiny fraction would have made the game a true masterpiece in my eyes. I can't even play it now due to space issues on my PS3. Now this pops up and well....Revengeance just looks a bit old hat. Christ on a bun, people on youtube are dumb though. It has a friggin PS3 and Xbox 360 logo at the end of the damn video! Its fairly obvious its coming out this generation. Edited September 2, 2012 by excel_excel
toxicitizen
I'm looking at Revengeance more as a Platinum Games title than a Metal Gear game, personally. I don't expect it to feel like a true MG experience, but Platinum usually makes solid action games. Edited September 2, 2012 by FLD

toxicitizen
Looks like there's an ARG of some kind for Metal Gear Sol--, err, I mean The Phantom Pain. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBo_EJ00G9A The image at the 0:40 mark Can't wait for the official unveiling later this month. I haven't been this excited about a game reveal in quite a long time. Probably because most games don't really have any build-up to it, I guess. But yeah, I think the last time I anticipated something this much was that whole countdown thing for Rising/Peace Walker back in uh, wow, 2009? edit: Looks like this might not be legit, after all. Disappointing. Edited March 17, 2013 by FLD

Thursday Next
People take MGS seriously at all? It's a series where you can hide from baddies by wearing a cardboard box and talk to a guy on the radio about how it makes you feel safe. A series where you can get a gun that has an ammo box in the shape of a sideways figure of 8 which means it never runs out of ammo... It's about as serious as James Bond. "Proper" MGS games are Daniel Craig, while Revenageance is Roger Moore.

Thursday Next
MGS is not serious in my opinion. It has brilliant gameplay and I love the universe. Come on man, "I live on THROUGH THIS HAND!", a man that shoots bees at you. These camp things are laced throughout the series. It has heavy moments, Sniper Wolf being a stand out example of emotional gravitas in gaming in general but it's equal parts cheesy and serious. Faiblesse Des Sens
You don't think it's philosophically serious at all? Were we even playing the same games?
toxicitizen
I guess it might seem that way if the underlying themes of the series go right over your head. Sure, the writing can be ham-fisted as all hell but you would have to seriously miss the point of the entire series to claim it's not serious in any way.
