Strangelove
Oh, people are bitching about the story here too? Fuck. Game is rad. Kojima hasnt been able to write a decent story since MGS3. Blame your own dumbass expectations. The game IS Metal Gear Solid through and through because a videogame is more than it's story. And if you think the best part of MGS is story, I feel bad for you. This series never would have flown if it had relied on their ridiculous cutscenes. The games are all fun and have always tried to be as open as possible. These games are what they are because of gameplay expectations being turned upside down, switching controller ports during the Decoy Octopus boss fight is way more important to gaming than a 15 minute speech by The Boss. Who cares? It's a crime to discredit such great gameplay and for people to be so upset that to deny that this is a fantastic game. Just go watch some terrible anime to wash away the pain.

Mal
God damn was episode 29 a pain. I can defeat every SKULLS without too much sweat but these armored ones are a pain. I enjoyed the previous SKULLS snipers fight and even the earlier encounters. I'm guessing to knock these one out effectively, it's either a C4 or rocket to the face to deplete their armor then tranq. shots to the face. Now that I think about it, their most vulnerable time is when they raise the boulder. As a side note, I lost around 150 personnel to the parasite. Honestly, within the confines of MGS, I like the idea of a parasite killing people for speaking the wrong language. The actual mechanism is odd but its purpose is great. Anyhow, first: anybody tried FOB missions yet? The ones I've been to has evolved into rockets battles. I don't think Kojima thought this through...Second: anybody tried to watergun the Man on Fire yet? I'm curious if you can actually disable him with it... Third: I'm really disliking the credits in the beginning. Keep such and such appearances a surprise. Lastly this game is sorely missing a Fulton Launcher. One for personnel and another for vehicles.
MetalCaveman
Upgraded D-Walker eats SKULLS for breakfast Haven't tried the FOB missions, not keen on risking resources like that. For the watergun stuff: you just get told that such a small amount of water won't do anything to him. Fulton Launcher FTW, it was one of my favourite things in PW, TPP needs one. Mr. GOH!
Still working my way through this game slowly, focusing on early side ops. If I want to actually progress in the game, I may have to give up restarting every time I get a base alert on a side op. I mean, I still haven't gotten the cargo Fulton upgrade, and all those vehicles and big containers of resources just sit there MOCKING me! toxicitizen
Why do you restart? I mean, I get why, I'm pretty obsessive about ghosting in stealth games. But side ops aren't ranked so there's no downside to screwing up. They're like dumb little missions with no consequences so they're the perfect place to experiment with new tactics. Plus, adapting to a screw up is often when the gameplay gets to shine the most.
Mal
Shit blows up and tons of people get executed on my side op missions. Not to mention a lot of abductions of A+ and above volunteers. I think I come out in the red in my side op romps...
Mr. GOH!
I start over because I have been told to Fulton every enemy I come across until I'm on mission 15 or thereabouts. I need those sweet, sweet D-rated personnel!
Mal
Ah yes, the great Mother Base Layoffs. I need to do another round of that since I've been getting tons of chaff for recruits and Mother Base and my FOB can't hold much more people. SomTervo
I have to disagree with all the grinding complaints. IMO you can replace the word 'grinding' with 'playing totally awesome badass missions with some of the best gameplay mechanics ever designed'. Practically none of it is repetitive - the only arguably 'repetitive' aspect is travel, and dull travel is easily surmounted using either A) cassette tapes, B) cardboard box fast-travel, C) deploying with or calling in cars/horse, D) choosing the 'Return to ACC' from the pause menu as a last resort. So I don't really get it when people say, to paraphrase: 'I hate all the [playing totally awesome badass missions with some of the best gameplay mechanics ever designed] in this game, especially when it forces you to do it to progress the story.' I would agree, however, that many of the Main Missions/Episodes could easily have been relegated to Side Ops status. It would have been much nicer if there were only 15-25 Episodes and the other 20 or so, which have minimal/no impact on the overall plot, were moved into Side Ops. The problem is that Main Missions/Episodes are structurally different - they have defined play areas and 'hot zones'. That's the only functional difference between Episodes and Side Ops. Which is pretty arbitrary. [Edit: Oh, and I really like the story so far. I'm over half way through, past 'Chapter 1'. It's very toned down, and there's only one thing which stands out as poor (of course it relates to Quiet). There are a few underplayed aspects which I'm worried will turn out to not go anywhere. But I'm almost at the end so I'll keep y'all posted with any thoughts. Also I love cassette tapes.] MH: Water Pistol doesn't do anything to Man on Fire I tried it and Ocelot's like "Good idea, but I'm afraid that won't be enough". It just makes a hissing noise. AFAICT, Water Pistol is to do your own wet bikini parties with Quiet. Yep. I love backstory and fluff as much as the next nerd, but going through all these tapes takes up so much goddamn time. Dude, the tapes are made for mid-gameplay. Do some side missions and listen to them. It's literally what they're made for. Strangelove
I liked that the water pistol didn't work. It seemed too obvious to MGS fans that something silly like that would work, but it totally doesn't and the game even comments on it through Ocelot. Anyways, mission 45 sucks. It's the only mission that has one shot kills. I got so annoyed by it that I just turned off my system. I still haven't gone back to beat it.
TCP
Yeah I started doing mission 45 last night. Because it starts in a side-op, you can't even exit out of the mission and go back to the ACC or Mother Base. I didn't have my launches developed enough, so I had to restart the mission, go to the beginning before the chaos starts and develop everything I could develop and wait 45 minutes for everything to finish. Easily the worst part of an otherwise perfect game.
SomTervo
Unlocked the final mission last night. Will report back. 70 hours or something total. Wtf.
Mister Jack
Mission 45 was indeed the worst. It took me two hours to beat that son of a bitch. Had I not previously developed the heavy body armor on a whim then I'd probably still be trying to beat it.
Mal
So it happened as I predicted it after playing it for a few hours... I really have no time to sink my teeth into TPP after the initial week or two due to my thesis work and other fun stuff. Could I blazed through the story missions? Maybe but I expect I would've hit road blocks after road blocks due to my under performing equipment. Structure wise, this game was just not as I predicted at all. I was expecting a relatively straight and narrow game with nice deviations. I'm not sure if I should judge this against the game since it's really my issue but god damn does this sucks. TCP
Mal, you need to get your priorities in order. Theses come and go, but a new Metal Gear?? We'll probably never get another one again. At least, not one that's not attached to a pachinko machine.

CorgiShinobi
I've got some rather unpleasant memories from the MGO2 days. It was one of my first online competitive experiences and the community could be toxic. Like, you show any level of skill and you've got some asswipe harassing everyone to kick you out of the match. Even teammates if you didn't go along with their plan, no matter how half-baked the strategy truly was. I remember I was playing as Meryl and a teammate began flipping out because I went off to confront the enemy. I took two guys down and came back looking right at him. "oh, okay you're still here." This looks much better and there's a true emphasis on teamwork. I'm not sure what class I might choose because I honestly like each aspect of each class. I'm thinking Infiltrator, just I hope I have good defensive options. Scout looks good, but seems to excel in long-range, which is fine, but I like to get in close. I worry Enforcer might become popular as I'm sure there will be players who will treat this as another FPS, guns-a-blazin'.

toxicitizen
It couldn't possibly have a worse story than MGSV so I, for one, am more than ready to...
toxicitizen
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA Holy shit, they really are desperate to milk every last bit of cash they possibly can out of this game. This is just fucking ridiculous.
TCP
The best way to make sure no one comes into your FOBs and steals your stuff is to not even set that stuff up in the first place. It makes the game much better.
