This is kind of bugging me, but do people really genuinely like the MGR soundtrack? I find it embarrassing and bland. If you want cheesy buttrock, there's tons better quality out there.

I just figure its some form of irony.

Like a majority of game soundtracks, when its in the context of the game, it's enjoyable. You'd never find me blasting "Rules of Nature" if I wasn't slicing cyborgs and bots on my television. It's like Anarchy Reigns, another Platinum Game, where the soundtrack is enjoyable when punching and slicing, but there's probably only a single track that you could play outside of the game.

At the same time I do have the soundtrack. A STRANGER I REMAIN

As for the 1080p resolution stuff, my guess is that they wanted to keep the resolution down to help maintain the frame rate. On PS3 and 360, it's a 720p game, but it runs smooth (at least on my end). When dealing with Blade Mode and the counter system, which does have a learning curve, stuttering and lag is the last thing you want on your plate. I'm sure there is a sizable amount of PC's beefy enough to handle 2K and higher at 60fps, but maybe they "restricted" it because it was too demanding. A bunch of guessing, keep in mind, but you do want this character combat action title to run well. You really do.

The lock is at the Recommended specs though

https://twitter.com/PG_jp/status/413968409479507968

Recommended:
OS: XP or Vista or 7 or 8
Processor: Intel Core i7 3770
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia Geforce GTX 650
DirectX: Version 9.0c
Hard Drive: 25 GB available space
Sound Card: DirectX compatible sound card

If hte recommend plays the game at the recommended FPS and resolution, why then make it the maximum specs, seems an odd choice.

I don't really have much care either way for the MGS series, but it seems a bit naf to lock the game and also be like "yeah it'd be cool if this guy could unlock it for us".

Exactly! I can understand when a port is fucking broken or is otherwise sub par but nothing is ever good enough for these people. It's like they don't realize that this is a game that was built from the ground up for systems where it would run at a fixed resolution. This is kinda like complaining that a game isn't running at 100+ fps. Sure, it would be nice but is it really that big of a fucking deal when you're getting a solid 60?

No, I'm not sure where I've implied that'd be the case. Pretty sure I'm getting at the folks with the high end PCs and monitors are the ones complaining about the artificial lock.

Maybe they should take a step back and realize that it's a console port instead of being complete assholes to an section of the industry that hasn't released many PC games lately. Some of us want to see this trend of Japanese developers and publishers releasing games continue.

A game being restricted to 1080p is the least restricting thing I could possibly think of. "Oh no, I can play it at this incredibly high resolution, but not all of the way to my even higher one! How dare they not care about the 0.5% of users with monitors that go higher than 1080p!"

Even a casual glance shows that folks with monitors in excess of 1080p is about 3% of Steams 60 million users(~1.8m), and it's rising. Which is pretty much expected given more and more higher res monitors are selling and high DPI is becoming increasingly the norm of late and more than likely going to continue into the future at an accelerated rate with the advent of 4K panels.

Also plenty of games manage to come out for console and PC without being purposefully limited, not sure why Platinum should get a pass, and certainly shouldn't be ignored that they're openly promoting an unpaid guy (Well, he'll be bought a beer) to be expected to mod their game for them when that's their job as the developers. That's certainly not an attitude to encourage.

It's not giving them a pass so much as managing expectations. This is their first PC port and they've been a completely console-centric developer up until now. I'd say 1080p60fps is a pretty good start for them, assuming the port ends up not having any other problems.

Plenty of games come out on both PC and consoles without being limited but I'd wager most of those were developed as PC games first and then ported to consoles. I really don't think that was the case with Rising much like it wasn't with Dark Souls.

Can't say I know what you're talking about with the openly promoting an unpaid guy part, though. Did they directly mention Durante or something?

Yeah the tweet I linked in the above post.

Again for prosperity https://twitter.com/PG_jp/status/414056103245127680

Also that's not the start, that's the absolute end. If you're in the growing sector of folks with components beyond the recommended/limited-to, then until Durante or similar steps in you're pretty much SOL.

Also I find it funny in one thread FDS is mocking the quality of youtube and facebook for video games, yet here is fine with the limit.

Oh the game is also region locked in case you're curious.

Ah, I missed that. Not sure why you think it's such a big deal, though. It's not like they're saying he needs to fix their game. Seems more like an acknowledgement of the guy's past contributions.

What? That doesn't even make sense. You build a killer PC then yeah, not every game is going to use it to its full potential. Should every single game be "future proof" like the original Crysis then? Not sure how you're SOL if the game runs smoothly.

All I know is, if you get the game now, you're paying $20 ($30 later) for a solid game, with all its DLC (Story, VR Missions, and Skins), and new options. Those include viewing all available Codecs and Cutscenes, and a new Chapter Menu option allowing you to play Boss battles. That last one would have been nice on console for some of the game's trophies/achievements.

Because the developers should be fixing their own game, not a random unpaid guy after launch. It's a bit of a dodgy expectation from developers to start getting and should really be nipped in the bud where it sprouts up.

As for "future proofing", it's not even present proof. 1080p monitors are old hat (you know they do 1080p phones right?), the GTX650 which it's capped to came out early last year (and Rising isn't due until next year). And smooth will be doubtful if it's running lower than native resolution. Also I'm not sure on your "future proof like crysis" remark, there's nothing that makes Crysis stand out from others with regards to resolution limits.

96%. How many folks in that 96% fall below the lower end of the specs though versus those that exceed the recommended/maximum? (as a starting point 10% of folks are on Intel HD Graphics)

Also if memory serves some months ago weren't you harping on about the benefits of native resolution gaming?

I just mean even if I didn't outright say it in my mind I would have been thinking in terms of not supporting 1920x1080, because that's the resolution I have and so it's the one I would have been thinking about it not meeting.

But obviously I don't remember the conversation so I could be wrong.

You weren't talking about games not supporting specific resolutions. You'd done something on your PC or the game you were playing at the time fiddling with settings and were going on about how you appreciated games running at their proper resolution to the monitor and how much it greatly improved the luck of the game.

Ah, was probably talking about when they upped AC4 on PS4 from 900p to 1080p.  Yes, it is nice when games support proper resolution, I'm just saying that they can't support literally every single conceivable resolution someone might have, and 1080p seems like a reasonable place to stop.

*Edit* - Obviously it would be great if they support higher ones, but it doesn't seem reasonable to get mad at them for not when it's such a small percentage of players.

They're not not-supporting every conceivable resolution someone might have, they're purposely blocking it off at 1080p. Their "Recommended specs" are the absolute hard limit and only because they've set it to that. there's no rhyme nor reason behind the games inability to go beyond that except the devs just choosing to arbitrarily limit it to that for whatever reason.

And as already mentioned, that "small percentage" works out about 3 million folks, which is no small figure. Why not cap it to 720p monitors then that way pretty much everyone on Steam can play the game. They've clearly not just done a straight port of the game, they've specifically worked on it to make use of some high end rigs so that they can display more parts on the screen, run at 60fps, but then they've gone and gimped it so it won't work on higher end monitors. What a stupid decision.

The only reason I can think of their choice to pick this arbitrary upper limit is not wanting to surpass the current stock of consoles (especially as their benefactor here is still mostly a console dev and does have MGSV meant to be looking good and show off their tech), which is utter bullshit and if that would be the case that definitely needs nipping in the bud, way way too early into this new generation to have it dragging everything else down to it's level.
