TheFlyingGerbil Posted July 28, 2012 Report Share Posted July 28, 2012 Really disappointed in the non-English footballers on team GB refusing to sing the BRITISH national anthem, especially the men's captain, Ryan Giggs. Pretty typical of how footballers usually seem to be selfish group of individuals rather than a team. It especially hits home when you see the pride of the other athletes parading through the stadium and the struggles some of the countries and people must have faced to get there. Also great is the historic achievement that this is the first ever Olympics to have all the countries allowing women to compete. I really enjoyed the opening ceremony - I thought the petals representing each country coming together to form the cauldron was a really nice idea and how can you not love the Queen parachuting in to the stadium?! Was pretty neat, and the petals did keep us intrigued in following along with the hour+ parade of athletes. That and going through my grans 1994 encyclopedia figuring where n when n what countries are/were. Shame on McCartney at the end. Beatles are big part of British music but his voice is past its best n hey jude was a terrible choice. Shame about NBC n Romney. I guess good on our end that just being relegated to news and not the reality of the show like in US. BBC obviously picked up from jubilee remarks n feedback. But yeah his voice was surprisingly bad. And who the fuck is he kidding with that hair colour? C'mon, Paul, you're 70 now, it's ok to have grey hair. As for "Fear Her" matt smith did torch in Cardiff, about closest dr who would get it seems. Given historical n cultural references of show you'd have expected it along side bond, bean n voldermort. This was well played upon by both London mayor boris johnson who used the remarks to pump up a crowd with "some guy named mitt thinks we're not ready. Are we ready london?"(or along those lines). And Cameron made some remark along lines of "obviously it's much easier to host Olympics in middle of nowhere" referencing romneys stewardship of Vancouver Olympics. Many news outlets also pulled a qoute from his book "No Apology" about england being "a small island with tiny houses that no one cares about and would have been lost to Hitler had it not been separated by water"(or along those lines). He is currently on a foreign relations trip through europe atm after Obamas campaign team called him a novice. One of the US athletes said of him "there's some Americans that shouldn't leave the country". NBC weren't as fun. They skipped over the 7/7 bombing tribute in favour of Michael Phelps interview. And during the social media/music segment remarked "here's englishman tim. Tim berners-lee, if you haven't heard of him neither have we". At least they understood the part about the web. @cowboy: I'm a Brit, I know who did Imagine . Maybe if they had rolled out Sean or Julian and got them to sing their dad's song.. but an indie rocker and an 80's pop-singer don't really have the world wide appeal of Paul McCartney. Maybe they could have done that hologram thing with John, that they did with Tu Pac earlier this year. Though, some people believe that Imagine is actually an ode to communism (debatable IMO), so steering clear of that song all together was probably a wise choice. Maybe in 2014 Like I said, if they had just brought out Ringo, and had a mini-Beatles reunion, that would have been an epic and memorable moment, no matter how much Paul's voice has suffered. Ringo or not Hey Jude did kinda suck as an Olympic finishing song. There was word of Rolling Stones being part of it, but they considered themselves getting on a bit. Also it is the London Olympics, so communism isn't a thing we steer clear of. I'm sure NBC could have arranged an interview in its place. He could have covered any other song, just not Hey Jude, it was pointless as an Olympic song. Not to mention McCartney himself would be the last person to want to cover john lennon's most famous song - rather like admitting Lennon was the better writer - it simply won't happen. Pretty much any other performer(s) and song would have been better. Second point is if, IF, any other Beatle song was to be used Imagine would have been an appropriate choice (imo). Third additional point which came a bit later on is: no law against covers, especially of deceased band members songs(which technically as McCartney is solo performer his Hey Jude was a cover).
