TheFlyingGerbil
What's up with NBCs coverage? Just reading about people complaining that it's delayed. How bad is it?
TheRevanchist
They are showing the big stuff in primetime instead of live. So, where the US is going to medal, or supposed to medal, they are delaying those things. And, they are only showing the one channel of coverage, not the 4 or 5 regular channels that show events during the day.
TCP
Question: When the hell did covers become a "thing you do not do". He could have covered any other song, just not Hey Jude, it was pointless as an Olympic song. I'd say the Beatle has a fair bit more reason to cover the song of another Beatle than the Arctic Monkeys. Why would you have, perhaps the greatest living songwriter, come out and perform a cover of his dead rival??? As Gerbal mentioned, and myself earlier, it's not the message, Hey Jude is a very famous song, with a very strong melody, that got the crowd singing. Hey Jude is a celebration, which makes it perfect for the Olympics opening ceremony. As for the NBC thing, that sounds terrible. I wonder how much the ratings suffer for oversea Olympics than North American Olympics. On the good news Canada is one medal ahead of our arch rivals... Kazakhstan! deanb
Eeep. Over here we have BBC1 with live n highlights (depends on the time), BBC2 n BBC3 running live, and the BBCi/Red Button service with other sports, as well as iPlayer Olympics site with streaming n rewatching of past events. Oh n Radio 5 with coverage too. I don't think it's humanely possible to have any more coverage than what BBC have managed. Though they have had a complete internal revamp over the past year with there website side of things in preparation for it so at least one thing related the to Olympics has gone off with nary a hitch. (touch wood)
TheFlyingGerbil
It's pretty cool actually, apparently the BBC is literally broadcasting every single event, the first time in Olympic history it's been done so you're not just stuck with the popular stuff and it's all thanks to the unique way the BBC is funded. ;-)
TCP
Pffftt I prefer the CBC model. Tax people, but still put in commercials. (Plus have nothing worth watching outside Hockey Night in Canada).
TheMightyEthan
(touch wood) Are you just trying to sound dirty or is that actually the English vs. English version of "knock on wood"?
TheFlyingGerbil
Maybe he uses it instead of the stylus for his samsung note? Seriously though, you say touch wood here - and usually tap your noggin if there is no actual wood around.
deanb
Touch wood is like a kind of "avoid the bad luck/hope it doesn't go wrong now I've praised it" thing. Dunno "knock on wood". And yeah you'd touch wood/noggin when saying it.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, that's exactly what knock on wood means. Something about scaring away the bad luck elves or some such. Edited July 31, 2012 by TheMightyEthan
TCP
Knock on wood is what we say in Canada. Sounds less dirty and less fun than touch wood. Yeah, that's exactly what knock on wood means. Something about scaring away the bad luck elves or some such. Those guys are jerks! deanb
So what's with the badminton disqualifications. What purpose would it serve for those teams to be throwing their matches (by the sounds of it it has been both sides, so not like someone is trying to rig the matches cos you don't have both teams lose). Also WWOOOOH ROWING GOLD IN YO FACE!!
Thursday Next
They were throwing matches to get an easier draw in the next round. Didn't realise they got disqualified though.
TheFlyingGerbil
Two south Korean teams are disqualified one Chinese and one indonesian too So four in total. South Korea and Indonesia are appealing.
Thursday Next
As Frankie Boyle said though: "It's just as difficult to lose a game of badminton if the other side is trying to lose as it is to win if they're trying to win."
Mal
Ugh... I hate the NBC's commentators. Its get pretty fucking tiring hearing "Ugh, major deduction." and shit like that. I have fucking eyes.
TheRevanchist
You must be talking about that weenie at the gymnastics portion. He drives me nuts with his know-it-all attitude. I can totally see SNL doing a skit about him.

TheMightyEthan
Apparently there's a big brouhaha now about the fact that because the US Olympic Committee gives our medal winners an "honorarium" they have to pay 35% taxes on it. Everyone's all "oh no, not all of the athletes are rich, how will they afford the taxes?!" How about out of the honorarium they just received...?
TheRevanchist
Income is income. They will have some more from the endorsements, as well. To offset some of the expenses, they have the expenses they put into gymnastics, which can be used if the taxpayer itemizes their return. If they only make the earnings from the medals, which is what, $15k? Then, they will most likely use the 1040EZ and will most likely pay a smaller percentage than most people earning more would have to pay. Really, someone is just trying to make something out of nothing. Too bad a newspaper has to exploit Olympians to get readership. But, that is how the system works.
TheMightyEthan
And more stupid fake controversy: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/06/fox-news-team-usa-uniforms-patriotic_n_1746519.html I do love the part where he says "[The athletes] are making a social issue out of this." No, YOU are the one making the issue out of it. It was a non-issue until you started bitching. FFS.
