TheRevanchist
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2184558/Kate-Middleton-U-S-Olympic-gymnasts-stunned-Duchess-Cambridge-pays-visit-o2-Arena.html I don't know how she is viewed by people in the UK, but I saw this last night and thought this was great. She is quite friendly with everyone. This is hardly her first visit with random people at the Olympics. Very cool.
deanb
Well generally depends if you're anti-royals or not. America did seem to care for their wedding more than us brits. Now the Daily Fail however. That rag is viewed with ddisdain. Americans seem to like reading it though.
deanb
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-19153924 I had being wondering on this. Did seem like local news was covering a lot of medal winners.
TheFlyingGerbil
'Losing their jingoism'? In the UK jingoism is a bad thing... And isn't she being patriotic by winning a gold medal for her country. Dunno if you were being miserable oop north, dean but people were plenty excited about the wedding here. I think there's a lot of good will and patriotism (to the extent Brits will allow themselves to be) in general at the moment whit he he wedding, the jubilee and the Olympics.
TheMightyEthan
'Losing their jingoism'? In the UK jingoism is a bad thing... Here too. This is the first time I've ever heard it used in a context where it was intended as a good thing.
deanb
@gerbil: I'm not an anti-royal...
Thursday Next
Agree with TFG. Around these parts general sentiment towards the royals is overwhelmingly positive. Perhaps because she is local? Also, love it when people use words they don't understand. My niece thought that "Benevolent" meant "Evil" because God was "benevolent" and he drowned everyone, turned them into pillars of salt and asked them to kill their own children. Of course she was about 6. And was not a news anchor. Personally, I am feeling that we have let ourselves down by not letting ourselves down enough in this years Olympics. It's tough to be the plucky underdog when you win so many things.
deanb
Saw someone arguing we only won the medals we have because as host nation we get to bypass qualification. Because of course the people that went on to get Olympic medals wouldn't have gotten through qualifications on their own merit. Also I repeat: I haven't said anything negative about the royal wedding. (As far as I'm aware). I'm pretty sure I've stepped in a few times on here defending existence if riyal family. Thursday Next
I must be missing something. Since when do we bypass qualification? I didn't see any British blokes in the 100m final. I saw two of them get knocked out for not having a fast enough Qualifying time.
TheMightyEthan
I think the host gets to bypass qualification to get to compete, but that when they do tournament-style progressive elimination the host nation doesn't get a free pass into the final. TheRevanchist
Sounds like a good plan, though. The host nation should have some competitors for the fans to see. Seeing a home team play is always fun. When most of the college bowl games are played in places where the crowd doesn't care makes those games pretty lame to watch. Thursday Next
According to this wiki article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Britain_at_the_2012_Summer_Olympics we did indeed receive a number of qualifications as host nation. But still did a lot of qualifying off our own back as well.
TheMightyEthan
Well and like Dean said, anyone winning medals more than likely would have qualified in any case, whether or not they were actually made to do so. danielpholt
I got a little emotional whilst watching Sir Chris Hoy pick up his medal. I honestly didn't think he'd be able to pull the leader back on that last bend. Coupled with the crowd and Hoy's tears, i could feel myself welling up. Well done Sir Chris.
TheFlyingGerbil
Great end to his Olympic career. Shame about pendleton , though obviously after the sting has softened she's been an amazing ambassador form the sport. My highlight for today was the team GB dude getting second on the 800m heats. The look on his face when he realised he was second was absolutely priceless. edit: LOL Edited August 7, 2012 by TheFlyingGerbil
TheRevanchist
This man has incredibly big balls, like fucking grapefruits, to even stay up walking. http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/us-runner-finishes-olympic-relay-leg-broken-leg-16969426 "Faith, focus, finish. deanb
Oh yeah I remember seeing a Paralympics adverts a few weeks back, looked pretty neat. (They're shown by Channel 4 over here, instead of BBC like main olympics) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AVaVvqb528 And the generic one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuAPPeRg3Nw (the guy breaking his leg kinda reminded me of them)
deanb
That was actually pretty decent. Got better as it went along, finishing with Eric Idle, Queen and The Who. Props to Gary Barlow for appearing, no one would have blamed him sitting it out. Spice Girls were neat too(Boris enjoyed them. Someone else will need to post the gif). Shame on no live David Bowie. Imagine got played btw...
TheFlyingGerbil
...and Paul McCartney was nowhere in sight. There was a choir singing it like I thought though. Overall I enjoyed the closing ceremony - not as good as the opening obviously, but that's to be expected. If the Rio bit was anything to go by I don't think we've got to worry about being eclipsed. Luftwaffles
Wooooow, that NBC coverage was godawful. Not only did the toss in commercials every couple of minutes, they cut out The Who, Muse, and the Kate Bush dance part. But hey, at least I got to watch the season premiere of "Animal Practice", because I toooootally wanted to see that.
TheRevanchist
I enjoyed the ceremony, despite NBC. Most of the ceremony was a plus, with two exceptions: Jessie J doing her best to destroy Queen and the outfits the US wore. What's up with the beret? When did we turn French? Oh, well. It was still a blast. Always look on the bright side of life!
