CrowKnow
For anyone else bored of D3, Path of Exile is having an open beta this weekend, F2P dungeon crawler that's been in closed beta for a while now. Only a few hours into the game, ID scrolls are the game's currency, global chat is pretty thriving... even devs talking quite a bit with the players, skills are basically gems that are socketed into items... usingg them levels them up. Maps are actually random, and you can manually make them reset. Also has switchable weapon/shield slots like LoD. Some downsides so far are relatively small inventory and shared loot in parties... also there's no real tutorial so global chat is filledddd with "HOW DO I X" questions. http://www.pathofexile.com/ That skill tree... http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/
Cyber Rat
I've been reading about this and will probably pick it up when it releases, at least to try it out. The skill system from FFX was what I liked the most about that game, and the fact that Path of Exile has something similar has piqued my interest. TheMightyEthan
It's been 6 months and it's still in Beta?
Cyber Rat
It's been 6 months and it's still in Beta? Shocking that a company will actually use Beta to improve a game, instead of promoting it.
TheMightyEthan
No, but it's shocking that it would be close enough to done to justify an open beta but still take more than 6 months to reach "complete" status.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Have you played it at all? A long, long time ago when I played it, it seemed to be very well done. However, that doesn't they had gotten very far with the content, but the gameplay was solid. So they're likely taking this time to not only get feedback on mechanics and whatnot but also to finish up on content.
Vecha
Just started playing today...Really, really like it. The first game where I may buy something from a cash shop just to show my support.
Luftwaffles
Tried it. It's... okay. I was one of those few people who really really liked Diablo 3, so take this with a grain of salt I guess, but I don't see what the fuss about this is. For one, it's got all the joyous DRM of Diablo 3, but somehow even less stable servers than Blizzard. Stuff was hopping around and teleporting, and I got a fair bit of input lag when housemates were torrenting. Shots also seem to frequently just miss, but that might be a game function, not sure. Far as the gameplay goes, it's alright. Nothing special. Not on the level of D3 as far as animations or combat feel, but honestly, I didn't expect it to be. It's more than passable for a F2P game and the gem system is rather interesting. Graphics are pretty damn dull though, and the map? Oh god the map. It's really really terrible. I guess I'm a little dissapointed because I heard people saying this was better than Torchlight 2 or Diablo 3, and it's a spiritual successor to Diablo 2. While I can see it being the latter, and I've got no desire to play Diablo 2 nowadays, I'd pick D3 anyday over this. It's got its problems, but I think it gets a pretty unfair rap for the most part. I guess people are just desperate for an alternative, so we've got this? I'm all for competition, and maybe I'm a filthy casual for not liking this much, but it just felt sorta sloppy and lazy. Just a beta, I suppose, but they've already got their store up in running, which in my eyes says "We kinda launched already".

Just a beta, I suppose, but they've already got their store up in running, which in my eyes says "We kinda launched already". I understand/repsect your opinion on it. Though...for one, It's still technically, like you said, a beta. It can only get better. I guess I wanted D3 to be more like D2. As D3 felt so, damn streamlined. To each their own. I can accept the "DRM" of PoE over D3's "Pay us 60$...sorry you can't play your game right now"(And no, I don't just mean the day one Errors...I have had a couple of characters lose all their shit. Blizzard's repsone? "Sorry, don't trade with people...oh, you didn't trade with people? Well...Don't trade with people?") I appreciate PoE for more than the more traditional feeling it gives(that I love so much), I also like their insistence on not, ever, making the game Pay2Win(there is nothing in the shop that dramatically affects game play. All cosmetic). It is silly to compare it to D3 and Torchlight 2. Anyone who says it is "better" has something they didn't like in TL or D3(Like me, who has been pissed the fuck off by Blizzard.) I see it as a fun, free game to play with some friends now and again. And hopefully, it(along with Tribes I suppose?) will get popular...and show that F2P can be just that...Free To Play. Again, I understand where you are coming from..just thought I'd expand my opinion on it to show why I, and maybe others, like it so much. Also, don't think you are wrong for loving Diablo 3 and won't tell you to stop playing something you enjoy. Wish I could get back into. But for now, I feel the peeps behind PoE respect me a hell of a lot more than Blizzard. Edited February 2, 2013 by Vecha
Luftwaffles
Makes sense. I think I'm mostly just tired of the kneejerk "Diablo 3 sucks amirite" response that seems to come up whenever a new ARPG or dungeon crawler comes out. This and Torchlight 2 are certainly not bad games. I like them, just like, as I said, I like Diablo 3. I just don't think they're this second coming of Christ just because Diablo 3 was a little disappointing. So, as a result, I went into both games with super high expectations and came out pretty disappointed. And I do agree on their F2P model. It is quite good, probably second only to DOTA2 that I've seen in making it purely cosmetic items. It's kinda unfortunate that DRM had to come along with it though, but I guess that's the nature of the beast when micro transactions are involved. I just don't think they're this second coming of Christ just because Diablo 3 was a little disappointing. So, as a result, I went into both games with super high expectations and came out pretty disappointed. I feel exactly the same way. I haven't tried Path of Exile yet (I have installed it, though) but I think it's stupid to even try to compare Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2. They have such different design philosophies that everyone is bound to prefer one over the other with neither side being able to objectively claim which one is better. Torchlight 2 was great and I can certainly appreciate how its skill system is more permanent and varied, but I personally found Diablo 3 to be the more fun game of the two. The higher production values and overall presentation had a lot to do with it and Torchlight II just couldn't compete in that department. Torchlight II's complete lack of story made the experience a bit less interesting for me once the novelty wore off (about halfway through Act II). So I'm looking forward to trying PoE but I'm not letting my expectations grow out of control like I did with Torchlight II. I'd be just setting myself up to be disappointed again. CrowKnow
My first race, as someone who's been playing semi-casually on softcore, was pretty damn fun. 4 reward points woo Lost to Chris Wilson though... CrowKnow
So the game is leaving open beta today (at 1:00pm EST) and will also be released on Steam. Big list o patch notes here. In short they're adding guilds, pvp tournaments and new 4 month leagues (think of these as a d2 ladder reset), a new class and balance changes. I can't recommend this game enough, it's one of the few games alongside tf2 that I can see myself coming back to whenever attacking the backlog gets a bit tiring. The game has tons of http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree'>depth and potential for theory crafting. The devs are quite active on their forums and the subreddit. Their policy on micro-transactions also gives me no qualms with supporting them since it's all cosmetic stuff except for stash tabs and character slots (default stash has 4 tabs and the default character limit is 24) ZiggyD has quite a few beginner oriented guides on his channel https://www.youtube.com/user/ZiggyDStarcraft/videos And here's Kripparrian's beginner video Edited October 23, 2013 by CrowKnow
CrowKnow
Guess I'll res this thread instead of making a new one. Apologies in advance for the triple post :/ Players were expecting the devs to announce Act 5 today and instead the next big update will contain 6 whole new Acts.... bringing the total to 10. People are kinda pooping themselves over at the subreddit. Currently they're using the classic D2 setup where there are 3 difficulties and 4 acts. Beating the 4 acts unlocks the next difficulty where you rinse and repeat until you unlock the endgame. Now there there will be a total of 10 acts they've got enough content for a single play through which means they're removing the 2 extra difficulties. From the perspective of someone who's familiar with the game they've basically more than doubled the amount of original content while removing the annoying grind of replaying difficulties. The replay grind became super apparent because of 1) Temporary Leagues - kinda like ladder resets/seasons ending in other games 2) Hardcore - character dies so you have to reroll 3) Experimentation - with so many builds to try out rerolling becomes a necessity. GGG are one of my favourite devs so I'm pretty excited for the upcoming patch which won't hit until Juneish :<
