Vecha
Hello fellow...X'ers? Recently, my wife was hit by a company car(Company car was Alabama Power, an electric company that runs most of the power in, you guessed it, Alabama. They have been very, well, painless to deal with in regards to getting her card fixed and covering our rental expenses(for over 2 weeks!). I want something for Pain and Suffering as my wife had whiplash, massive pain for 3 days, and moderate pain for 4-5. She thinks I'm being vengeful and asks, "What will the money do?" What do you think? Or what stories you got?
TheRevanchist
You're being vengeful. Definitely. It's tough to see loved ones suffer, but money isn't punishing anyone. It's just going to make things a mess with courts and lawyers, and no one wins. My decent story: My bro-in-law and wife (dating at the time) were at a stop light at an off ramp up in Fremont when some guy not paying attention to the big red light hit us from behing. I was looking straight ahead and so was my b-i-l, which I shall call Nicky. My wife was looking left at traffic oncoming, so her neck was in pain after this. We went to the emergency room and the place was just about empty. So, they took her back in like 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Nicky and I were moving the waiting room furniture around, for which the staff came and gave us the lecture shit. We laughed, but put everything back and told them they should hire an interior decorater. They allowed us to go back with her, as I think the reception people were annoyed. When we got there, she was lying flat in a neck brace, and her brother was laughing his ass off. "Shut the fuck up, Nick, before I kill you." Nicky then proceeds to get the hospital gloves and blow them up, just in time for the nurse to see. She wasn't amused, but he still tried to make a hit on her. She left, and then he went back to making fun of his sister. Needless to say, that was the shortest time I ever spent at a hospital ER room. It was about an hour, at the most. Lesson: Be annoying and get to leave the hospital early.

Pretty decent story...an hour out of ER is great..lol I've been there a hell of alot longer.
madbassman39
I have never had a serious accident, my girlfriend rear-ended my baby girl (a 65 Mustang) but everything was OK because my car only got a scratch. One of my really good friends who I look at as a little sister was rear ended by a drunk driver. Her car was totaled and she had to have surgery on her back. She was on the Crew team at our University, the accident meant she couldn't row any more and had to drop out of the team. She went to court for pain and suffering, which I felt was justified because not only was the driver drunk and I hate drunk driving, but also because of the fact that she couldn't do a sport that she loved ever again. It took her nearly five years to get the money, and she only ended up getting half of what she wanted (she wanted college to be paid for, so around 14 k). She's just happy now that everything is over with, but I can't help but feel bad for her.

Those who text and drive are in a close second. They are the most self-centered assholes on this planet. Hate that so many people go through that. A cousin of mine had his wife and child killed by a drunk driver. He was out of jail within a few years. Scum of the earth...
TheRevanchist
I was at a bachelor party with a pretty good group of friends, and one person I hadn't met. It was amazing to me that about all of the guys in the room were driving drunk and got into an accident. The only ones that didn't were me and the stranger (who turned out was a great guy with whom we all bonded that night and died a year or two later from a heart condition). Only one of those guys who wrecked a car while driving drunk had a conviction.

fuchikoma
I've been pretty lucky overall - no multi-vehicle collisions. A couple years ago, I was driving on a suburban crescent with the perfectly worst possible slush on the ground - about 3-4" thick, and sort of a thick, greasy consistency with no chunks of ice - just a paste. Anyway, enough excuses... I'd killed traction control on my car because it was causing it to limp along at walking pace and hold up traffic and as I went into the curve, I fishtailed back and forth 3 times, running wide. Riding the brakes, I rammed my car into a tree at about 2 MPH, but still managed to do about $16,000 (!!!) in damage to it. (No structural damage. Crimped hood, cracked headlight, cracked radiator line, split bumper, which contained foglights, some other misc damage front of the engine, and blown steering wheel airbag.) My auto insurance is through State Farm Canada, because my first vehicle was a motorcycle and they're famously good to bikers. They heard the claim, signed off on it, minus the $1000 deductible on my policy, and that was it. No questions asked, no rate hikes to follow. I'd had my bike around 3 years with them, and the car for just over 1 year, but was over 25 when it happened. TheMightyEthan
When I was 15 I scraped the post of our carport with the front corner of the bumper, but that's about it.
Mr. GOH!
Why on earth would she not take what they're offering? Does she want to sue for more or something? If not, she should just take the money and run. Edit: Under the law she may very well have a right to the money anyway. Edited September 4, 2012 by Mr. GOH! I place it under some misplaced altruism. Karma. Whatever. But that's my Cyncial side. Anyways...for some reason our medical insurance paid for the doctor visit...so we are just gonna get on with things. No continued pain. Car is fixed. Rental was paid for...so she's done with the ordeal. Edited September 5, 2012 by Vecha
