When I read that LA got shutdown, my first thought was "Ah! Damn it!". Then, 3 seconds later, I realized it was for the best. The good days had long gone. Now, I am hoping for what FLD said. Obsidian RPGs are some great stories and characters. I do wish they would update us on that meeting they had with Disney and see if any decisions have been made.

What are they doing besides the Kickstarter RPG? That's not a snarky question I'm curious. I mean for them one game might be enough as they have to prove they can make a game that can run without crashing.

 

Sour memories for me as a save file for KOTOR 2, the only one I was using recetly, got corrupted for no reason and i couldn't play the game anymore.

 

Well, I assume they're putting the finishing touches on The Stick of Truth. Also, I'm pretty sure not too long ago they said they had one or two unannounced projects in the works.

 

Project Eternity only has like 12 people working on it. It's not really their main focus.

Blitz, who made the Dizzy games have gone out of business after 23 years with 175 job losses. The two founders, the Oliver twins (who are semi-famous - at least I'd heard of them) have a couple of projects on the go and will be able to rehire around 50 of their previous employees. If you look at what they'd been making for the last decade or so it seems a a bit depressing so hopefully the smaller team to support will be able to make some more interesting games

Not quite a "death" but Irrational Games is laying off 90% of it's staff to Ken Levine can focus on smaller gamers.

Which imo is fucking retarded as hell. If he wants to make smaller games with a smaller team then what the hell was wrong with him spinning off another studio with him and 14 buddies instead of making a 140 people unemployed and having to look for work?

 

Currently it comes across as hugely selfish on Levine's part. He misses the good old days so 140 folks have to bite the bullet while he continues to sit at the top safe and sound. There's more than likely plenty Take-Two and money and all that lot sitting behind this all, though why would be a great reason since in general Infinite seems to have been a pretty solid success and nothing in the past year has cropped up to suggest otherwise. If it had been a stinker it would have been much much sooner to launch that folks would have been laid off.

 

Hopefully this is going to be pulled apart by folks and there's more to it than what Levine has put up on the site. It just doesn't hold water so far.

Defending it in what way? I mean, I'm sure there's more to it that happened behind the scenes and it's more complicated than just him shutting down the entire studio because he felt like a change. 2K/Take-Two must've had something to do with that decision. I mean, if it was just Levine wanting to leave, there's no way they'd let him dissolve such a strong team for no reason. And the fact that Levine is staying under the 2K umbrella kinda fits with that, I think.

 

If he did shut IG down because he just wasn't feeling it anymore, though. That's kind of undefendable.

Yeah that seems like a real dick move, and the worst part is that there are actually people defending it.

 

Why wouldn't you assume that there's two sides to the story? And why is this inherently a bad thing? Your average person out there in the world does not give a single fuck about the random employees that make up a game studio. They just want to play games that they like.

Yeah, the more I think about this the more I'm convinced it wasn't Levine's call at all. It might well be true that he wanted to go back to basics and all that jazz. But shutting down the entire studio over it? There's no way in hell he would ever have the power to do that. He might have been the creative force behind Irrational but the studio still belonged to 2K Games and there's no way any sane company would shut down that kind of team unless they had strong financial reasons to do so.

 

A lot of people are suggesting that Infinite failed to meet their expectations and considering the long and troubled development that most likely inflated the budget significantly, I'm inclined to believe that's actually right on the money. With development budgets essentially guaranteed to keep increasing with the new generation, I think there was simply no way IG could keep existing in its current form. Not with their heavy focus on high production values, narrative-driven single-player games.

From Levine's message on the official IG website:

 

Besides financial support, the staff will have access to the studio for a period of time to say their goodbyes and put together their portfolios. Other Take-Two studios will be on hand to discuss opportunities within the company, and we’ll be hosting a recruiting day where we’ll be giving 3rd party studios and publishers a chance to hold interviews with departing Irrational staff.

Sounds like they're going out of their way to help everyone land on their feet.

Not really a studio death but this seemed like the appropriate thread to post it in. Looks like Amy Hennig is no longer at Naughty Dog.

The article suggests it's possible she might have been forced out by the Last of Us guys. If true, that's kinda fucked up. I wonder what that could imply for Uncharted PS4 since she was lead on that. Development/story troubles perhaps?

Something that hasn't been brought up yet:  the layoffs at Eidos Montreal.  27 people after the launch of Thief.  It's really sad.  Thief certainly isn't the greatest game ever made, but it's a solid game that I'm enjoying my time with enough to spend most of it so far exploring and doing side activities rather than actually advancing the story.  For the that's the mark of a good game: that I enjoy my time with it enough that I just want to play, without caring if I have a story-driven reason to keep going.

Yeah, Amy had nothing to do with Golden Abyss (which wasn't even a Naughty Dog) and say what you want about that game but the dialogue/writing was never a problem. Now that Drake / Sully/ Elana / etc have been established I don't think writing for them is particularly difficult.
