Cyber Rat
I'm getting a second-hand Nintendo DS tomorrow, primarily because I need it for some kanji education software. However, I can still play games on it! So, recommendations for "must play" titles, please. Aside from Phoenix Wright, since I'm definitely playing that. Saturnine Tenshi
Elite Beat Agents Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 Professor Layton series Animal Crossing Mario Kart DS Meteos Rhythm Heaven Sands of Destruction is a good JRPG if you can get past the voice acting. Luminous Arc series if you're into SRPGs. Though they only released 1&2 in English iirc.
excel_excel
Yeah good picks from Saturnine, add these too! The World Ends With You (Once you get the hang of the battle system, its fantastic) Professor Layton series (Just brilliant, polished presentation, great puzzles, charming storyline) Pokemon Black & White (best the series has been since Gold & Silver) Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (a SRPG with a fantastic story) Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (First person dungeon crawler with Pokemon mechanics basically. Really dark story at times, good stuff) Final Fantasy IV (Good remake of IV) Advance Wars DS (there's two of them, both are great but the latest one Days or Ruin/Dark Conflict is brilliant. Addictive is what this is) Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (This is fantastic. The animation of the sprites is sublime, and the story and characters are gripping.) Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (Loved this one. The amount of fun it has with the Mario world and character is great and its genuinely funny in places. Really fun battle system too) Solotarobo: Red The Hunter (Really high production values in this JRPG with an interesting story and an action based battle system with its mech)
FMW
New Super Mario Bros is a good game. Probably still at full price though. Super Mario 64 DS is not so good, be careful and avoid that one. The World Ends With You is a good game with some issues, but it's worth tracking down because of it's personality and uniqueness within the JRPG space that's so often stagnant. Advance Wars is a totally excellent game. Days of Ruin is more balanced and has online features (multiplayer and downloading community made maps (which are almost always excellent)). Dual Strike has more non-online content and is unbalanced in a way that can also be fun as long as you aren't taking it to seriously. Chrono Trigger DS is a good game if you've never played Chrono Trigger. I played it for the first time on the DS, so I can say that it's still a good game even without nostalgia. I'll second Excel's recommendation of the SMT games on the system. Be careful of Devil Survivor 2 though - it's harder than the already hard original and I didn't like the story nearly so much.
Strangelove
Chrono Trigger DS if youve never played it or if you want to revisit it. Its the best version available. Castlevania DoS and OoE. The hell with PoR. Ill also recommend TWEWY. FF4 DS. Its not as good as the PSP version, though thats debatable since its a remake, not a port. The voiceacting and artstyle is nice though. Id skip out on New Super Mario Bros personally. Not worth paying more than 10 bucks for it. Mario Kart DS is my favorite MK, so thats a given. Id skip the Zelda games and the GTA game too. Didnt like those at all. The Scribblenauts games are also cool. Metroid Prime Hunters is awful. And I honestly wouldnt bother with most ports from better more powerfuls systems. They tend to be totally gimped. Tetris DS is also the best Tetris there is.

Mister Jack
If you're open to the idea of imports, Jump Ultimate Stars is an absolute must play. It's the closest thing to Smash Bros you're ever gonna see on the system.

CorgiShinobi
The Zelda games Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks Kirby Super Star Ultra And as Mister Jack said, Jump Ultimate Stars. The only thing I couldn't do was play online because, after a year out, the only ones playing online were experts who would murder you with Ichigo and Frieza.
