For all of you literature and symbolism nuts, one more thing I noticed was the red apple Marceline pulled from the fridge. As you know, what seems random in literature usually has a double meaning. A lot of that meaning is taken directly from the bible in English lit. Ice King even comments on the apple. I think that is quite an obvious symbol.

I never really cared for Marceline as a character before this episode. Not that I hated her or anything, but like most of the other characters most of the time in the show, she had a typical routine when it came to the plot. Either she had a father issue or was the rebellious one who didn't show her feelings easily.

I will say, the Doormaster episode warmed me up to her more given that it showed she cared for others in the show rather than just pulling pranks or acting wild. I've felt like the father issue stuff is typical, you know, how "daddy do you love me" and he actually does but it's not so obvious to her.

This episode though, I actually for once feel like she has gone through some deep emotional trauma. Sure there was the buttface Ash, but she handled it on her own until Finn and Jake accidentally erased the break up.

EDIT: Typo...

But, why even have the apple? We know the show is more than surface deep. It's not written as deeply as you think. And Marceline is destined to wander the earth (assuming Earth).

A couple of things other. In American lit, rain and water are used as a plot device for change, like a baptism. Ice King shoots up his lightening bolts in futility, as he can only produce snow, meaning he is incapable of change as he currently is.

The name Simon is an old name from the bible. There was Jesus's brother, and also the name of Simon the Zealot (one of the 12 apostles - known as St Simon). That might play into who this character really is.

For his last name, Petrikov is the name of a ski resort town, which ties in nicely to the cold theme. The cold theme being that Simon is already dead. Ice King is a cold corpse of who he used to be, also indicated by him only existing because of the magic of the crown.

The ironic part is that Ice King wears the crown, but is not even a king to his own existence.

My additional theory on the whole idea of Ice King and M being the last two people in existence at the end of the world. So, what little is left of Simon, he uses the power of the crown, sacrificing himself in the process, to create the Land of Ooo.

Look at my avatar and the picture it is from. If that doesn't show how people absolutely love this episode, I don't know what will. I personally would love to have a branch off mini series that last maybe four episodes that runs after a new episode. Perhaps make it come on monthly or bi-weekly and inbetween serious episodes and funny episodes.
