Third Strike Battle League

Hey folks, gather 'round, gather 'round! In a few weeks, we're going to start up a new battle league! The last one went pretty well, but a common problem was that a lot of people just didn't have the game. Well, this time we're going with one that a lot more people seem to have- Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition for PS3!

Wanna get your parry on? Got some Reflector setups to show off? Let me know in this thread, and we'll get you on the list!

I've not played it much, but I'm fairly certain this game is tough for everyone. Pickier about inputs than any game I have played before (including Street Fighters), and absolutely hilarious to come to after a season of P4A. Gotta dust off those execution chops, I guess!

Alright folks, it's happenin'! The league is going to officially start Wednesday, October 17th, so start practicing! Let me outline how this will work.

Part 1: Round Robins

The first part of the league is the the round robin matches. In a two week period (Oct. 17-31) everyone will play every other player, twice. Each match is a first to five (FT5)- the first person to win five games, wins the match. By the end of the first week, try to have played five of these matches- you have ten total between the two weeks, and it would be lousy to have to blitz them all in the second week.

The purpose of the round robin matches is seeding- to help determine who should face whom in the first round of the tournament. If we have ties in match wins, they will be tiebroken by how many games you won over all- so even if it looks like you can't win a match overall, don't give up! Every game you take counts.

Part 2: The Tournament

After the first week of round robin matches are done, we'll get together and figure out a date and time that works for everyone for the tournament. The tournament will be set up by either me or Omnimon, so don't worry about the math side of things- you just need to worry about playing. The first matches of the tournament will all be arranged using the seeding from the round robin- the person who won the most matches will be against the person who won the fewest, and so on until the two people in the dead middle are matched. The tournament will be double elimination, which means that if you lose one match, you're not out yet- you go to the loser's bracket, and if you lose THERE you're out. So, two losses and you're out of the tournament.

The scoring for matches will be kind of like tennis- game, set, match. Every game is the first to win two rounds- a normal game that happens any time you play Street Fighter. The first person to win two of those wins a set, and the first person to win two set wins the match. If you want to change characters, you can do that at the start of a new set, but not during one.

Part 3: The Rules

Okay, folks, this is Third Strike, yo. That means we need some rules. So first off- no Gill. That's tournament standard, the game creators didn't even try to balance him, and he's just obscenely good. No other characters are banned. Chun, Ken, Yun- all fair game. Next, let's talk connection issues. If you lose connection during a game, replay that game. Even if you were just inches from the kill. It sucks, I know, but ya gotta replay it. If it's consistently an issue, we're all friends here- talk to your opponent and see what you want to do. Games can also be replayed for lag if you both agree that the game was unplayable. Again, we're friends- honor system here. If there's a dispute, work things out yourselves. We trust ya.

Scheduling for round robin games is as you find time- hit up your potential opponents on Steam or Twitter or whatever, work things out. There are no known gamebreaking glitches in 3SO, so anything is fair game. And finally, character selecting. We're using a bit of a system here- the loser can select a new character whenever. The winner can only change characters at the start of a match, and at the start of a new set during the tournament.

I think that's everything. What am I forgetting, Omni?

The rules on character changing need correction/clarification:

During a round-robin set, both players will use the character they selected at the beginning of that set, for the duration of that set. There is no obligation to play a particular character for the duration of the two-week round robin period, just finish each FT5 with the character you chose at the beginning of that particular FT5.

For the tournament, you must use your chosen character for the duration of a set. Only when you have lost the previous set, can you change your character. The winner of the previous set may not change characters at this time. For example, Omni plays Six in the tournament. Six plays Q and wins the first set 2-0 in a walkover of Omni's Ryu. Before beginning the second set, Omni can change his character - let's say he picks Urien. Six must remain playing Q in the next set. If Six (Q) were to now lose the second set to Omni (Urien), before the start of the third set, Six could change away from Q.

Clear as mud?
