toxicitizen
As long as a country's panic isn't maxed out, it's fine. You can lower it by giving them a satellite (which makes it a good idea to hold off on launching satellites until right before the council report, so you can keep a country that would've otherwise dropped). There are also a few missions that will lower panic worldwide. Base management isn't too complicated. You just need to find a good balance between steady satellite production and equipment upgrades. Oh and while this thread is getting some activity, would any of you guys be up for some MP sometime? I've been meaning to try it since launch but never got around to it. TheMightyEthan
How does the multi even work? Is it coop?
toxicitizen
Nah, pretty sure it's 1v1 only. From what I understand, both players start with an equal pool of points they use to build a squad. It doesn't even have to be humans vs aliens. You can mix it up. Luftwaffles
I'd do it. Duke and I played a match closer to launch, and I've played with other folks. Net code issues aside, it'd alright.
toxicitizen
I tried a ranked match today. I found an opponent pretty much instantaneously but I got some kind of bug where I'd move a unit once and it wouldn't let me take my second action and just automatically switched to the next unit. If I tried reselecting the frozen unit, I'd just get locked out of giving any commands for the remainder of my turn. Happened twice in the same match. Needless to say, I got my ass kicked. Not the best first impression. Edited January 20, 2013 by FLD
TheMightyEthan
I've encountered a vaguely similar bug in singleplayer with Double Tap on my snipers. Sometimes it just doesn't let me take the second shot (although it doesn't lock me out of the rest of the units).
toxicitizen
I've had something like that also happen to me but I'm not sure it's a bug. In my case, if my sniper can't take his second double tap action right after the first one (because he doesn't have a target), I can't reselect him once I've moved on to another unit, even if something changes to bring a target within his line of sight. I think that's how it's meant to work. Actually, looking at the wikia right now and yeah, both actions have to be taken immediately one after the other. TheMightyEthan
I know that, but what happens to me is I take a shot and hit the target, but it doesn't die. But then, instead of letting me take the second shot, it automatically switches to my next soldier as though my sniper's actions were used up. Now, because I didn't do them right in a row, I can't take the second shot even though I'm not the one who switched to the other unit. It happens somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the time. toxicitizen
Well, if it happens half the time, you do know double tap has a 1 turn cooldown, right? You can't do it every single turn.
TheMightyEthan
I did not know that. I wondered if it was something like that, but nothing I read (in the game or online) mentioned a cooldown. Thanks. *Edit* - Or so I thought. I went back to look at the wiki page and it says right there, "1 turn cooldown." And it hasn't been edited since October. Apparently I just can't read. toxicitizen
Yeah, it's pretty easy to miss since it's basically a passive ability. I only found out about it recently.
Mister Jack
An iOS port of this game has been announced. And by port I mean a full port, not a scaled-down iOS remake.
deanb
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/23/xcom-enemy-unknown-iOS/ The news story if anyone wants it. I'm questionable on their ability to pull that off, iPad 10" seems possible, but a diddy little iPhone? No way. I struggled with Avadon and I'm on a Note, nevermind a smaller phone model. The visuals are getting a notable downgrade mind.
toxicitizen
Man, that is such a bummer for me. When Jake Solomon talked at the BAFTAs and said they would be announcing something within the month, I kind of assumed he meant new content. :/
Eleven
Pretty good news to me! I think someone mentioned here that they should have had this on the iPad. When I tried it, I definitely agreed. However, I'm not sure If I would actually buy and play it, as I'm not really interested in this game. Maybe? I wonder how big of a download this is. It's a huge game on PC.
deanb
Well it'll be rocking lower res textures n low poly textures. It's also going to have only 3 of the maps from the main release. Which somewhat belies the "it's the a full port".
toxicitizen
Well, I think they meant that the game wouldn't be mechanically altered. But yeah, only 3 of the maps is kind of ridiculous. The game has like two or three dozens maps and after only my second or third run of the campaign I started to want a map pack pretty badly. Anyway, all hope is not lost, though! Some people are theorizing sequel but I really hope it's an expansion. Also, this is just awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTk0Yo1uf4U&feature=youtu.be
deanb
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/12/xcom-enemy-unknown-prototype-videos/ Bunch of videos of the prototype game.
NeoStarr
Pretty sure those are out of order. From what I've gathered from interviews the team originally made the game identical to X-Com, like you see in the second clip, and added the stealth system later, like you see in the first clip. That third clip has to be a CGI concept though, right? I lost my shit when the soldier actually dodged the aliens reaction shot. It just looks too good. Apparently the XCOM shooter is no more. I'm ok with that. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123275-Troubled-XCOM-Shooters-Website-Disappears

Eleven
It didn't really sink in to me that this was a universal app, that's cool! I also like how you have control on refreshing iCloud saves. Sometimes if the game automatically does it, it doesn't work as well, like in infinity blade. Anywho, I'm going to finish recently bought games first, then I'll probably jump on this. I really like playing on the iPad. And after TWEWY, I'm not as averse to $20 iOS games. As long as they're done well.
madbassman39
I recently started replaying XCOM: Enemy Unkown on classic mode. My friend and I are playing together using the same settings as me, and for some reason I keep getting fucked up the ass game after game and he isn't having the same problems as me. I don't even move all of my soldiers beyond their blue zone for my first turn and I am almost always swarmed with 9 enemies. My friend has never experienced this, but I will run into more enemies in one turn than he encounters in his entire missions. Every enemy that lands a hit on my soldiers has a critical hit of 7 or 9, instantly killing my soldiers. Every soldier that gets promoted dies in the next round with one well placed shot. I had a Floater shoot my heavy with 9 hit points and kill him in a single shot! Its frustrating. Is this what classic is supposed to be? I like the challenge and I like the idea of the likely hood of losing my characters and needing to play super safe, but this is grueling. I wouldn't question the legitimacy of the gameplay if my friend was experiencing the same thing, but hes not. His runs are much better than mine all because the game isn't bending him over. I can't even get past the second downed UFO before failing the game! I've started 5 games and all 5 games ended the same way and have been way more difficult than my friends experience. NeoStarr
Yes, that's all correct. Use full cover only and move one direction at a time. Don't move everybody, every turn; instead keep half your guys on overwatch and push with the other half. This way if you run into a dude you'll at least have a chance to take a shot at him. People will die; it will be total bullshit when they do, but it's doable. It will get quite a bit easier after you get some better armor and laser weapons.
madbassman39
My problem is I keep failing before I can get laser weaponry available. I started a new game last night and so far so good. I lost a few good men and one mission, but overall I'm getting the hang of playing much much much more careful.
deanb
Yeah I've yet to hit the point of laser weaponry when playing myself. Fucking terror missions.
