Chronixal
I thought about this primarily with games in mind but really it can apply to anything. How do you to prefer buying things; new, second hand or just don't care? Personally, it has to be brand new every time unless the scarcity forces me to go second hand. I like to know the item I have is in mint condition and has only been touched by my hands. The obvious exception being larger things, like a car. AcidCrownie
Being uber short on money, I tend to buy used. Unless it's an EA game with their silly online pass things. Then they're new.
Bouchart
I really don't buy games from the current generation of consoles so new is typically out of the question anyway. Then there are PC games, which you can't even buy used.
superfrogsavestokyo
With games I tend to either rent, wait till it's discounted, or buy it new. The only used console I bought was my PS3, but I bought it from a friend, though. The library is my best friend, and I work at a bookstore (can check out books like a library or get them really cheap after discount). After buying a used game once, I was horrified by the state of the instruction manual.
Mudkip3DS
I compromise, actually. I buy new games when they are on sale. I rarely buy used games, if ever.
Chronixal
After buying a used game once, I was horrified by the state of the instruction manual. This is why I never buy second hand anymore after the first time. I bought what was supposed to a 'good condition' copy of Smash Bros Melee off ebay and I was appalled. The state of the case and insert alone was bad enough and disc had a huge scratch on it. Sure, it still played but it looked awful and given I hate having stickers on my cases, it was just too much. superfrogsavestokyo
The pages of the manual were bent up and had something on it that I couldn't identify. But I've had the same problem at the central library here. Which really pissed me off.
Chronixal
The way some people look after their things is pretty poor. You can usually tell by the way they describe it. Basically, never buy things from people who refer to their belongings as 'my shit'.

TheMightyEthan
I usually buy new, unless I can't find a new copy (like Ico or something), or the price difference between used and new is just utterly ridiculous.
MetalCaveman
I prefer buying new, in pretty much everything, the only times I buy second hand are with videogames. Also, I always ask for either pictures of the actual game, or to see the game if I'm buying it in a store, fortunately, save for my purchase of Armored Core 4 which had no manual and was completely destroyed (I managed to change it for another game, seriously, I had never seen a Blu-ray so damaged before), all purchases of used games have been satisfactory. And then there's Xenosaga episode 2, which I bought used, but when I opened it, it was pretty much brand new, as in, the previous owner probably just opened it and then decided to sell it. Boom
I bought a used version of Phantasy Star Online when I was a kid and someone had thrown up in the case. The game was fine, but the left side of the case and the manual were just disgusting. How the hell did gamestop let me buy that?! But somehow, I wasn't traumatized that much, and I still buy used if the price is low enough. This year, I've purchased Bayonetta, No More Heroes 1/2, and REmake used and they all work great/are like new.
Swordfyre
When the PS4 or whatever comes out, I intend to buy a PS3 used and a ton of games used. I simply do not have the money right now to buy all the games I want for the PS3 right now. I generally buy PC games new on Steam...because it's not like you can buy them anyway else on Steam lol. c hoertjes
I usually buy new, but it really depends on what I'm buying and how much money I have.

Basically, never buy things from people who refer to their belongings as 'my shit'. I have OCPD and take ridiculously good care of all my belongings, but I still refer to most of it as junk or shit. On Topic: Aforementioned OCPD requires that I buy everything new. And that I never sell games after I buy them.
Chronixal
I'm also a hoarder when it comes to my games, even stuff that's years old and never gets a look in any more. Of course by then the trade in value is zero so they're not worth getting rid of either.
