TheMightyEthan
I'm not sure I know what you're talking about. Do you mean like some of the shots from outside the ship or whatever? Cause if so then I had forgotten about those, but totally agree.
Commander Shepard
How about some MANDATORY, UNSKIPPABLE, SLOW-AS-MUD TUTORIAL STAGES. ESPECIALLY EVERYTIME YOU SELECT NEW GAME, EVEN NEW GAME+! *mouth foam*
Shadowstep
I hate mandatory tutorials, especially when you're forced to sit through it on a harder difficulty.
Mister Jack
Why the hell don't more wii games support the classic controller? A lot of the games I play don't require me to aim the remote.
Yantelope
When a game's cutscenes are in-engine, but for some reason instead of showing them in real-time they have them prerendered anyway. Seriously, why would you do that? It just makes the cutscenes look worse cause they have compression artifacts and shit. Enslaved did it, but it's even more noticeable in Batman: AA (both games I've been playing this week). In Batman it's like they smeared vaseline all over the digital lens before recording the cutscenes. Yeah that bugs me a bit too. On the subject of squads: It seems like you've got a bit of a problem with squads. If the AI is good you can just hang back and let your squad do all the killing for you. If they suck then what's the point of having them at all. The only game I can really think of that handled squads pretty well was Brothers in Arms but that was kind of crucial to the game. In most games like Halo and COD your squadmates are just cannon fodder.
Gyaruson
Most games put you in a squad because without it, you would just be a one man killing machine and would kind of destroy reality. So, games like SOCOM, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon put you in squads with dumb as shit AI teammates. Seriously, most squad-based stuff blows, unless it can be played in coop. The first Rainbow Six had realistic teammates. The only problem was that it was kinda random who lived and who died and since when they died they were dead for good it was usually best to just lone wolf the game. Too much realism can be not fun sometimes.
Mister Jack
I was just reminded of another one. Some of these new games (RDR) have realistic skeletons or whatnot in their characters so their movements aren't just canned animations. That's fine and all, but when you get knocked down by something, does it have to take a fucking fortnight to stand back up?
Commander Shepard
Would you like to save? >No Are you sure? -While mashing buttons to get off this screen, No is selected by default- Would you like to save? Repeat every single time.
Mister Jack
For that matter, every game that lasts more than a few minutes now needs autosave. All of them. If you're worried about people being saved into a corner, just give them an autosave slot and a manual save slot. I do not want to lose hours of progress because your crappy game froze or because my power suddenly went out.
SomTervo
How about a classic trope that we've only started seeing in recent years? Achievements that can only be gained through multiplayer progression/ stats. When I first heard about this I didn't really care- I only really played Halo 3 and Gears 2 online, and I didn't have an achievementsmack-addiction on those, so I just had my fun, forgot about it, and moved on. But more recently, in games like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, which I've nearly 100%ed, the only achievements I haven't got are ones that you need to do in multiplayer- which has barely any players online these days. Or the worst? Killzone 2. To get plat you have to be, literally, in the top 5 players on you entire continent's server. You have to be top of the leaderboards. Out of the tens of thousands who play all the time, and the hundreds who play it every day. Fucking ridiculous. I'm fairly sure there's one for being 1st as well. I love the game and have practically all of the singleplayer achievements, but screw that shit. Mr. GOH!
No manual save. I love Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood bunches, but I hate the autosave mechanism. I get freaked out whenever I quit out by the ominous "unsaved progress will be lost" message because I'm never sure when the last time the game autosaved. Well, at least until I realized that it autosaves all the fucking time.
Commander Shepard
Also, games that allow only ONE save file. Have a completed game file but want to start a new game to try out some different things, better not save or say good bye to your save file. I'm looking at you Pokemon and Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

I'm looking at you Pokemon and Ghostbusters: The Video Game. I didn't realize many games did this at all. I sorta loved it as a feature in the original Dead Rising. Then again, I'm in the minority who thought a lot of the arbitrary design decisions to increase that game's difficulty were pretty good. Agreed. Although I haven't played much Pokemon at all, I suspect the whole 'gotta catch 'em all' would be severely fucked with if it allowed multiple saves. But I could be wrong. I believe Kane and Lynch had an achievement saying if you want to play as Kane, you had to be the top player. As in THE top player. Fuck that shit. Also, games that allow only ONE save file. Mister Jack
You had to earn extra save files? That's some of the worst game design I ever heard. Hey, why not disable the right analog stick until you get five achievements while they're at it?

On the same difficulty, if I remember correctly, which generally if I am replaying a level, I want to ramp up the difficulty and not give up my saved career. docsfox
I hate it when a game gives a limited amount of time before sending you back to the beginning of the game as if it were a groundhog day scenario. I'm looking at Breath of Fire 4 and Zelda: Majora's Mask.
TheMightyEthan
First person cutscenes where I don't have control of the character. It's fine if the're just a few seconds long, but any longer than that and I start to get pissed. I'm looking at you Bad Company 2 and Aliens vs. Predator. Also, checkpoint/autosave immediately before any unskippable cutscene, especially when that cutscene is right before a hard part of the game. No I don't want to be forced to watch the boss rant about his plan again, I've already seen it 5 times, just let me fucking play.

TheMightyEthan
Hey, the racing game in KotOR was pretty awesome. And half of GTA is about driving cars (the other half is stealing them). How is that not appropriate?
Mister Jack
Racing them isn't fun. That's how. Edit: I'll put it like this. Where GTA is concerned, have optional races if you want, but don't make it a required mission. And RDR horse racing was required? Seriously? Where GTA is concerned, have optional races if you want, but don't make it a required mission. And RDR horse racing was required? Seriously? There's like three races between the two of those games. Is that really so bad? And I also think that they are appropriate given the gameplay.
