deanb
What is the specific part of the hardware that makes a Nvidia GPU Shield compatible? It could just be bullshit in an effort to get people to upgrade. It could be, but given that we already know that when Nvidia get involved with games they tend to magically run better on GeForce GPUs it's quite likely that the requirement of specific Nvidia GPUS to stream games to thier Nvidia handheld is probably a bit more than just marketing ploy. Anywho I wrote some words. Probably not overly good words towards the end because a headache really began to set in and I wanted done. http://pressxordie.com/2013/09/23/who-is-steamos-for/
TheMightyEthan
I've always assumed it's a marketing thing that requires a 650 or higher for Shield. Especially considering that in terms of raw performance my 470 is better than a 650, but for some reason it won't do Shield when the 650 will. deanb
The minor under the hood additions Kepler brings couldn't be anything to do with it, given the timing of GTX600 series release with their likely internal intention to develop the Shield and Grid in future?
TheMightyEthan
I think it's marketing, and if they wanted to make it work on older series cards they could. Not saying something about the hardware on the 600+ ones doesn't make it easier, but short of getting an nVidia engineer in here to explain it I'm not going to believe it's impossible. Mr. GOH!
Newer cards may have hardware allowing for faster/better compression of the video signal or syncing with the Shield. It could also be marketing.
TCP
What is the specific part of the hardware that makes a Nvidia GPU Shield compatible? It could just be bullshit in an effort to get people to upgrade. I hereby declare: if SteamOS catches on, I will get into PC gaming!! But only if most major games and high profile indie titles (looking at you, Cube World) make it to the platform. As someone who isn't a PC gamer what is appealing about this to you so far? Basically at this point it is: 1) An OS you install on a HTPC to play some games natively and stream the rest from your current gaming PC 2) An OS you install onto a gaming worthy PC and give up anything released for Windows with the incentive that AAA support is coming. 3) An OS you dual-boot alongside Windows. To put things into perspective there's under 200 native-Linux games on Steam with AAAs apparently coming next year. But obviously you won't see many (if any) devs porting their old games over unless this gets huge. That would also not apply to DirectX-powered games. Honestly, unless they get some sort of crazy built-in WINE solution I don't think this is enough to appeal widely just yet. It's a start but once you actually sit down and imagine how you would use it you see that it's limited (or really expensive.) I definitely see this appealing to the crowd who have a computer in one room and don't want to run a 50 foot HDMI cord into another. I'm not in that crowd currently but I would have considered it in my previous apartment. Like I said.. if this catches on. I don't like the Windows OS, I haven't used one I like since XP, and I'm not a fan of the direction Windows is heading as a platform. So if in the next few years, most PC games are being brought to the SteamOS, I'm open to the idea of having a computer solely running SteamOS, as gaming is all I'd ever end up doing on a PC since I have an iPad and a MacBook to due all my websurfing, music downloading, recording, video editing on. Or if nothing else, because it's free, I could install it on my MacBook, nothing to lose. Still doesn't fix some of my major issues with PC gaming in general; compatibility issues with hardware, controller support, etc... but we'll see what Valve has to offer tomorrow. TheMightyEthan
Still doesn't fix some of my major issues with PC gaming in general; compatibility issues with hardware, controller support, etc... For the most part these aren't issues anymore. I can't remember the last time I had to fiddle with a game to get it to work with my hardware, and 99% of the time games you'd want to use a controller for just automatically recognize a controller as soon as it's plugged in. Mr. GOH!
There have been some high-profile isolated incidents with hardware compatibility recently, Ethan. Tomb Raider comes to mind. But there have been a similar number of hardware compatibility issues for multiplats on consoles, too, like Skyrim on PS3, apparently. If there were a Steambox under $100 that plugged into a TV and allowed me to play games streamed over the home network from my PC, I might buy it. Cheaper than getting DVR capabilities on both TVs. TheMightyEthan
By issues with Tomb Raider do you mean the hair? Cause I hardly feel like that counts, you just turn it off, it's not like it's an important aspect of the game.
Mr. GOH!
I agree. But it's the sort of thing folks bring up when saying that PC gamers have to navigate terrible incompatibility issues.
TCP
Wasn't it our good friend FLD who couldn't get Ass Creed 3 running on his computer? That guys like 3x smarter than me, so if he can't figure it out, I'm totally doomed.
Vecha
I'm excited about SteamOS...being that it is a pain, for me, to try and plug my gaming PC up in the living room.
TCP
You can sign up for the Steam Machine beta now.
deanb
You have a 0.001% chance of getting in btw. (Not gonna stop me giving it a shot mind, not like it takes much effort, and hey. Free PC) Seems the last post is going to be about the controller. Given they've yet to cover properly how they expect the other 90% of their games to run on SteamOS, they can I guess at least cover how they'll get all the games that require keyboard to run on it too. Cos 24 games isn't much.
TCP
A little disappointing, I was hoping to get pictures, specs, and all those juicy details. A beta that, like Dean said, we all pretty much have no chance of getting into, is a bit underwhelming... but I'm excited about this technology. EDIT: This title should be changed to Steam Machine ... or Steam Machines? Edited September 25, 2013 by The Cowboy Poet
Faiblesse Des Sens
A little disappointing, I was hoping to get pictures, specs, and all those juicy details. A beta that, like Dean said, we all pretty much have no chance of getting into, is a bit underwhelming... but I'm excited about this technology. EDIT: This title should be changed to Steam Machine ... or Steam Machines? "Beginning in 2014, there will be multiple SteamOS machines to choose from, made by different manufacturers." This is why they haven't revealed anything. Like what was mentioned before a "steam box machine" is more of a spec/minimum requirement than it is any one thing. "The specific machine we're testing is designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware. Other boxes will optimize for size, price, quietness, or other factors." So anyways we might end up seeing specs of the test machine itself in a few months.
toxicitizen
Wasn't it our good friend FLD who couldn't get Ass Creed 3 running on his computer? That guys like 3x smarter than me, so if he can't figure it out, I'm totally doomed. There was nothing to figure out, really. Their specs were just wildly inaccurate. At this point, I have to assume it was my CPU that didn't cut it. But it's slightly more powerful than the Q9400 in the recommended specs... Honestly, PC gaming is nowhere near as complicated as you're making it out to be. This was the first time something like that happened to me. The hardest part is picking out the parts and putting it together, which is also significantly easier than it sounds. And you can skip that part altogether by buying pre-built.
TCP
Yeah maybe, I still here a ton of people complaining about updating drivers and what not. I don't know, I'll hold off on purchasing anything until after these Steam Machines hit the market. This could be an affordable way to get into PC gaming, then if all I need to is figure out how to install Windows while not overwriting SteamOS... TheMightyEthan
Driver software checks for its own updates now, just like everything else.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I still here a ton of people complaining about updating drivers and what not. Who are these people? FFS even beyond the auto-updaters from Nvidia and AMD this is built into Steam.
TCP
People were doing it today on NeoGAF. I would like to get some sort of PC gaming. This gen I had a 360/PS3/Wii but I feel like my basis could be better covered with a PS4/Wii U/PC. Most of the Xbone games I'm interested in, like Titanfall are also coming to PC. Faiblesse Des Sens
People were doing it today on NeoGAF. Did the rest of the thread consist of people pointing out their stupidity? Seriously. Every card comes with an auto-updater. Steam has one, too.
toxicitizen
I don't know, man. I started lurking on GAF recently and like half the time I'll just back the fuck out of a thread before I'm done reading the first page. The stupidity levels over there can actually rival those on reddit.
TCP
Yeah I've been lurking NeoGAF lately because Kotaku has been unreadable for ages now and you dudes don't post enough here, but it's a real mixed bag.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Going to Kotaku for the comments has been a mistake for several years now.
