CorgiShinobi
For me, it would depend on if the Steam controller is capable of being useful/functional in a variety of genres.
deanb
Given 360 controller has considerable support at the moment I think that'll take hold for a long time yet. And potentially DS4 will take over after that. Thing is the Steam controller isn't really designed as a controller in itself, but a replacement/hybrid for current controller and kb/m games.
TheMightyEthan
The Steam controller may become more popular in the sense that more games start supporting it, but I doubt it will become the most popular option.
madbassman39
I probably won't switch over, or at least will take a very long time to switch over. I like the traditional controller layout, and the 360 near perfected it and now the PS4 controller feels even better. If games begin to only support the steam controller, I probably won't get one. Â Damn Computer... Edited January 14, 2014 by madbassman39

deanb
See the 360 controller became the main go to PC controller because essentially multi-plat devs just do a ctrl+c, ctrl+v on the control layout and poof it works on PC (which Windows Vista onwards by default support the controller and XP through a driver). The Xbox One controller is essentially the same controller (in buttons and functions) so I can't see that really changing much this gen when the only thing supporting Steam Controller by default is Steam OS. From a dev stand point you might as well have your game support the 360/xbox one layout mainly then use that on PC too and let Steam Controller users just kinda emulate 360 pad layout.
madbassman39
It looks like they are adding the buttons. Â http://www.joystiq.com/2014/01/15/steam-controller-ditches-touch-screen-for-traditional-buttons/ Â I like this design much more, but I am disappointed because IF the steam controller was a better way to control, as much as I would've resisted the change, I would've appreciated what they were doing.
Cinder
It's kind of a long shot, but I'd like to hear from anyone that managed to alpha test one of these things haha
TheMightyEthan
I feel like someone on here did get one. Â Was it staySICK?
deanb
I don't think anyone here got one. 300 consoles made n sent out and there's like 70million folks on Steam. Chances are kinda slim (even when obviously it got slimmed down to US only and not everyone entered...still kinda annoyed they let everyone enter, then say it's US only).
TheMightyEthan
I know the chances were slim, I just thought I remembered it happening. Â Guess I remembered wrong.
Cinder
It would have been neat. And I think the individual manufacturers may be doing their own semi-open betas as well. This is just a rumor most likely though

Mister Jack
What idiot is seriously gonna pay more than 1000 dollars for one of these things? Â If you're determined to spend that much money you might as well just invest in a tower. Â

Mister Jack
Yeah, I know, and part of that range is 1000 to 5000 dollars. Â I don't see how what I said is confusing.

The question was "Who is going to pay up to $5,000 for a micro pc steambox instead of getting a tower?" Â The answer to that is "Not many people."
Mr. GOH!
I think that a good number (relatively speaking) of rich folks who would consider spending $2k plus on a TV PC gaming machine would probably appreciate the friendlier non-tower form factor for their setup.   It doesn't take many people wanting the expensive options for them to be worth the manufacturer's time, I'd imagine.

Just sling it in a wall cavity or something.  I'm not suggesting that these systems are a waste of time by the way. Sometimes it's done as a vanity project. A lot of those super ultra collectors editions break even at best, they're done because it raises overall profile of the brand. I'm just saying that not many people are going to buy these. Eleven
Will the cards inside (specifically the GPU) be upgradeable on these things? Could you theoretically buy a lower priced one and then maybe upgrade the card after a year or two?
Mr. GOH!
Theoretically, yes. Dunno what the actual upgradeability will be yet.  And to get back on the ultra expensive units; I think a lot of the ultra high-end units have their prices inflated by the ridiculous cost of multiple top-of-the-line graphics cards and would likely be made-to-order rather than pre-assembled to sit around in a  warehouse for a year or two. That would go far in controlling the manufacturer's costs. But I agree with Thursday; the highest-cost editions will not be selling all that many units. Faiblesse Des Sens
I'm just saying that not many people are going to buy these. Â Yet, somehow, Falcon Northwest has been in business for years and their business has only grown in that time. I really don't buy that just because you have a lot of money means you're okay with buying something huge and not at all sleek. If anything being rich is what allows you to do that while the peasants have to buy huge towers that aren't specialized to their needs. Between this thread and the Apple thread I'm struggling to understand your position on high end purchases. Seems like if you buy anything you are either a douche bag or a peasant or is there one FDS approved mid range purchase per category that leads to consumerist nirvana?
