I really like the concept of this. The idea that I could rule my own kingdom, wage war, trade and tax all with the use of other players. The problem is, people will all want to be king, they will all want to be the top and because there is no such thing as mortality in a video game, it will never live up to its potential even if done right.

Why should I pay taxes to this one player, I'll try to kill him and his army by raising my own army. If I lose, either my character dies and I start over or I re-spawn and try again. Perma-death is the best way to deal with everybody fighting for top dog, but really you only can be top dog if other people allow it, nobody will allow it just because you are stronger.

Really neat concept though.

You pay your taxes because otherwise the king's dudes will come fuck your shit up, just like real life.

Though I'm sure you're right that the kinds of long-term stable societies that we see IRL won't happen in the game, it will probably be more like small, constantly warring factions.

It would certainly be interesting for researchers to follow, you'd get to see the social contact in action. See what elements it is that makes us not just go and kill someone better off than us and take their belongings or descend into anarchy on a daily basis.

As for the game itself, yeah I'm gonna guess somewhat infeasible. Especially as at the moment it's pretty much just an idea and a video. If it was somewhat feasible they'd have something to show off. It's probably worth mentioning that at the moment there's no singleplayer game that matches what they're aiming to do, let along doing it in an MMO.

I thought of such a game before and it does sound really awesome on paper. Its just really hard to pull off at our current time. This game is way ahead of our time to say the least. This is a game our children or our children's children will play.

To say more... You would need some sort of army of devs to keep it going. Most practical way for this to work is to have a really flexible engine and a damn good AI overlord (with human handlers of course...). I'm serious with the AI. Somehow this game universe got to be kept in check somehow so it won't get too loony and that reasonable random events can happen. I don't think the devs can keep up.

Regarding their current plans... I would say having multiple planets being inhabited at once would be a good move so when people go into space, they'll have peers equal/lesser/stronger to/than themselves. It would make for some neat round X of first contact.

That is such an awesome idea I can't even express how awesome that idea is.

It obviously wouldn't be as earth-shattering as it would in real life, but it would still be cool. I was just thinking along the dynamics of what happens when one planet develops space travel first and finds another planet that's at say modern levels of technology. Obviously the idea of what would happen in that kind of situation has been explored in fiction, but it's never been "tested" in such an organic situation. The best we can do is try to draw conclusions from looking at our own past, which is useful but can only go so far, especially when taking into account the social changes that have happened in the last couple hundred years since the last time a truly "first contact" scenario happened.

I don't waste my time (or money) on Kickstarter anyway. I just think it's a neat idea to toss around. If they did include multiple populated planets, it'd be a good idea to also do something with different in-game languages. Cultural things, even. People will obviously find their way around it, but I think it'd be a entertaining to watch. If my experience in similar environments is any indication, those who resort to out-of-game solutions are few and far between.

The interwebs would be a problem. The first few hours or first day would be still interesting unless the two that make contact planned on it somehow. Doubt it though since how many people even know how to orientate themselves in space? Your north can be their east and for all you know they don't even realize they see totally different color scheme than you do.

Again, game of the future. Fucking future...

I feel like some of you here are getting excited about the idea and possibilities and will ultimately be disappointed by the lackluster showing [if it ever comes].

Obviously this almost certainly will not pan out as they predict, but it's still fun to talk about in a hypothetical kind of way.
