Games You've Beat in 2013

Fuck you, Strangelove! I was coming here so sure I was going to be the first one to have finished it!

But yeah, not a bad game but definitely a shitty entry in the series. The best thing about it is the story and even that starts out strong but ends up losing most of its momentum and becoming as much of a mess as the previous games. At its peak, it's seriously fucking good. But it's all downhill from that point on. The ending is also very anticlimactic. Also,

I actually had the Joker twist indirectly spoiled. I accidentally found out that there was a big reveal about Black Mask's true identity in the game and, while I didn't know it was Joker, as soon as you reach the Penthouse and hear about him for the first time, it was kind of obvious. I find it kind of hilarious, though. This is pretty much guaranteed to piss off everyone that hated the twist at he end of Arkham City as well as those that keep complaining about how the series always focuses on Joker so much,

I enjoyed it and will keep playing it until I've done everything but I'm really glad I only paid 25$ for it.

Oh and I'm sure you'll all be shocked to hear that the title turns out to be utterly fucking retarded as the game has absolutely fuck all to do with Arkham. What's annoying is a few weeks ago I remember reading an interview and one of the devs got asked about that and he was being all mysterious "Oh, you'll have to play the game to find out!" and strongly hinted that yes there would be something. Like, fuck you and fuck your bullshit, asshole. This was a fucking cash-in on the name and you fucking knew it.

Im not upset about it or anything, but you think theyd try a little harder to connect the Arkham name with the other 2 games. Just a little detail they should have added, god knows they tried hard to make things canonical in silly ways, mostly -

Having Harley Quinn meet Joker in Blackgate instead of in the asylum. I dont read the comic books, but Im pretty sure int he cartoon they met in the aslyum. Though I did like their exchange during those scenes.

Then again, it's not like there's any other currently active Batman game series to get confused with... I guess my main problem with the name is that they actually made no effort whatsoever to connect the story to it. It's not like they couldn't have done it without drastically changing the story. They could have easily had the Asylum instead of Blackgate and the game would've been essentially the same.

So what's next? Arkham Redemption? Arkham Requiem?

I thought the idea was that it's Arkham Origins in the way that the weirder villains have started to pop up, people drawn to 'The Batman' instead of mobsters and such, laying the groundwork for the later Batman conflicts.

To be fair, there is

a bit of dialogue during the credits where Quincy Sharp is on Jack Ryder's show and says that he blames not the Batman or the Joker but rather Blackgate Prison for all the shit that went down over the night. He claims it's an inadequate institution and that he plans to push for Arkham's reopening. as a solution to the emerging problem. But it feels like an afterthought more than anything. Would've been better to have that be a part of the actual plot, I think.

I thought that too at first, but people the Penguin and the Hatter are clearly already established at this point, so that kinda shoots that explanation out of the water.  Hell, even Black Mask is weirder than just some regular mobster.  If it had been about the first weird criminals showing up and taking over from people like the Falcones then it would have made a lot more sense.

I still get a sense that's what they were going for. Haven't done the Hatter stuff yet, but it seems like Batman's first encounter with him and his being cordially invited (cordially invited! cordially invited!) and people like Black Mask and Penguin seemed to operate before Batman was around, rather than being drawn to him. Of course, it really all comes down to The Joker...

By the way -

I didnt get the after credits scene. Do you have to be a super nerd to understand it?

I didn't get it either at first. Not being too familiar with Deathstroke, I just assumed it was a tease of something from the comics. But I had missed a small detail. It says Suicide Squad on the form she tosses him. That's basically a government black ops team that uses supervillains for deniable ops. I think the current comics kinda focuses on Harley Quinn as a core member. Anyway, the theory floating around is it's to tease an upcoming Suicide Squad game.

Finished Beyond Two Souls last night. For the longest time I thought something felt missing... then it finally froze my PS3. Ah, that's better.  One freeze is better than the multiple I had with Heavy Rain. Quantic Dream:  excruciating load times and frozen systems.

Batman: Arkham Origins.  It was good, I don't feel my money was wasted, but not as good as Arkham City.  I liked it enough that I am going to go back and finish all the extra stuff.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

Holy shit. What a great game. You guys all need to play this. It's really short so 15$ might seem a bit steep but it's much better than you'd think looking at gameplay footage. I don't remember people making a big deal about it when it came out (at least not on the level of something like Bastion) and that's just plain wrong.

The idea of a coop game for one player is interesting in and of itself but the game is really greater than the sum of its parts. The art direction is beautiful , the game keeps adding new gameplay elements to keep things fresh but they never overstay their welcome and the story is just really good. This game goes from pure fun and joy to wonder and even has a few moments that are sad, really grim and kinda dark. Seriously, it has enough emotion in it to give David Cage a raging hard-on.

And it's all done without any dialogue. I mean, there is dialogue but it's in some made-up gibberish language. And the best part: the strongest emotional moments are conveyed entirely through gameplay. When something as simple as a detail of level design feels like a gut punch, you know you're playing something special. Really glad I picked this one up.
