TheMightyEthan
Thread for discussing strategy games in general, be they TBS, RTS, whatever. I'll start with a question: Does anyone know of any console or PC strategy games that play like a tabletop wargame. Something like Advance Wars would be great, although ideally you'd be able to customize your units/army. Console would be better than PC, because really I'd like something that I could play with people on the couch, get as close to the tabletop feel as possible without having to actually spend hours setting up the battlefield and taking time to do all the dice rolls, etc. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Luftwaffles
There's Blood Bowl, but it plays more like a sports game than an Advance Wars esque wargame.
Saturnine Tenshi
What about the Paradox games?
TheMightyEthan
I'm looking for stuff that would work well as local multiplayer, and isn't just ridiculously complicated. Do those work for that?
Saturnine Tenshi
They're pretty damn complicated for the most part (though they'd work for LAN). So probably not. Maybe Johnny would have an idea? Is he even around anymore?
TheMightyEthan
No, he left, but that's a good idea, I'll hit him up on Steam.
WTF
If you like advance wars wouldn't you like FE and VC though they're not quite tabletop wargames like steel panther. There's a few but I can't remember them off the top of my head. Europa Universalis is sort of tabletop wargaming. I wouldn't really call crusader kings in that genre though. Not ridiculously complicated hmm that's going to be tough to recall. God it's been years since I played some of these games but there were a lot of them in the mid to late 90s. Etherlords isn't tabletop per se but had elements of that plus a trading card game it's on got. Warlords series began more like a wargame but progressed to RTS. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I hadn't realized until I started really looking what a dearth of turn-based strategy games there are.
TheMightyEthan
I'm starting to think my best bet might be to take the rules to Mobile Frame Zero and write my own game in Java.
P4: Gritty Reboot
On the actual tabletop front you might like X-Wing Miniatures. It sounds less mathy than the game you played but is still "playing with toys" tactically. Or for a all-in-one board game experience, Last Night on Earth. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I think I might be better off trying to get into strategy boardgames rather than full-fledged tabletop wargames. *Edit* - More than for myself, the problem is the attention and interest of the people I might get to play with me. P4: Gritty Reboot
Yeah, it's tough to find the right group. If I didn't have a local game shop with regular meetups, half my games would still be unplayed. And I STILL can't find anyone to play War of the Ring with me.
