deanb
How did a topic on this series not exist?Anywho Cliff Bleszinski has given out some words on how he think it could top GTA. Mainly along the lines of dropping the dildos and related elements.http://www.vg247.com/2013/01/25/bleszinski-on-saints-row-lose-the-gimps-and-dildos-to-beat-gta/The "would you play it in front of SO/parents" is certainly a good benchmark for your game to try n follow. TheMightyEthan
I disagree. The way to fight a juggernaut like GTA is not to try to make your game more like it. He compares it to Battlefield and CoD, but AFAIK Battlefield hasn't killed CoD yet. If you lose the ridiculousness then it becomes indistinguishable from GTA at a casual glance, and people will stick with GTA.
toxicitizen
Yeah, and isn't the whole point of Saints Row to be like, the anti-GTA or something along those lines? Edited January 25, 2013 by FLD
Faiblesse Des Sens
Yeah... but some people think they took it too far with SR3.
Saturnine Tenshi
"Could" kill GTA? Bah. SR3 was actually fun. Something I can't really say for GTA. A big part of that is how it doesn't really take itself seriously.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I haven't played SR3 but the shallowness of all of the mechanics made SR1 and 2 much more of a drag to play continously while GTA4 was something you could actually improve, find the feel for, and always discover new things. Those physics are really untouchable.
TheMightyEthan
I've played all three Saints Rows, and 3 was the only one I liked at all, and I liked it a LOT. I like it at least as much as GTAIV (which I also loved, contrary to popular opinion), and perhaps more. I agree with you that the mechanics of SR1 and 2 made them a drag, but SR3 was great. And the complete ridiculousness of everything in the entire game contributed to it. If they tone it down much it would just hurt the game, imho.
deanb
I don't think he's saying to tone down the "ridiculousness", like flying a VTOL about, tron-like hacking, zombie apocalypses, diving through a plane etc, but to not focus so much on the whole beating the shit out of folks with giant dildos. As he said, they become "the game with the dildo". Anywho he has expanded some more over on NeoGAF http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=46896054#post46896054 Seems there's an element of the prude america to it too. Eleven
I liked Saint's Row 2 better than 3, for some reason I can't point out. I just had more fun with it, even recommending it to friends. I just couldn't get into SR 3, for some reason I can't follow the story. Had me asking "I'm doing what? For what?" all the time. I dunno... About the article though, hmm.. I see where he's coming from, but I kinda play Saint's Row 3 for those things so I don't want them to go. Maybe the dildo was a bad PR move, maybe not, as it's still being talked about as one of the posters pointed out. Hey, SR 2's defining feature (as far as trailers go) was spraying everyone with shit, from the awesome Septic Avenger. deanb
Well that was quick, I assume in development before Volition was picked up.
TheMightyEthan
August 20 in US. Looks like with the flying/super jumping stuff they might have added a little Crackdown or Prototype into it.
madbassman39
The last expansion pack that was supposed to come out in October (?) was cancelled and THQ/Volition had said they were going to make that into the fourth game. At the time it seemed like THQ was trying its best to damage control before the inevitable happened. I'm sure if they were able to hold on long enough to release this game it would have helped them stay for at least a year, they just didn't get very far. This game is pretty much what the expansion had said to be. Super powers and all that. Looks fun though!
TheMightyEthan
They said that this is not that expansion (Enter the Dominatrix), this is it's own thing, though some aspects of EtD were incorporated into it. They said EtD is going to be released as DLC for this game.
Saturnine Tenshi
This is very nearly the height of video game announcements.
toxicitizen
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA holy shit. Best. Trailer. Ever. Looks like they decided they didn't care about those who thought The Third went too over the top. Lol.
Luftwaffles
IMO those that said SR3 went too far over the top missed the point of the game entirely. I'll admit I didn't quite get it at first, but once I hit the segment with the exploding rickshaws, I just kind of thought "Ohhhhh, so that's what this game is about".
Waldorf and Statler
I couldn't give a crap about the other ones but I'm really interested in this one

deanb
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz8EDvU7pJc Part of me is thinking it's a tad too silly, but that sentence itself also seems silly.
deanb
I've seen a fair bit of praise, though mainly along lines of "it's not boring man holding gun like most covers these days" but personally I think it's a bit too busy.
TheMightyEthan
I agree it's too busy, but it's certainly better than the generic shooter covers you see so often.
