Luftwaffles
If we can have a semi-active thread for hockey, we can have a semi-active thread for soccer. So. The European leagues are in full swing, American MLS starts up next saturday, and the next World Cup is in a year. Good time to be a soccer fan. So, is there any others on this board? I know we had a Euro 2012 thread, but it was pretty much just me and Nexus if I remember right. Also, .
Waldorf and Statler
I'm in for discussion. Mainly around South American teams, Germany and Portugal. I can't give a crap about the other teams or even club soccer.
Mal
Enlighten me since I always wanted to watch and such. All I know is Brazil, Spain and Portugal. Also Ronaldo might be or was god or some junk.
Luftwaffles
Okeydokey. I shall attempt to enlighten you, Malicious. For European leagues, the big ones are the Premiere League (UK), Bundesliga (Germany), and La Liga (Spain). Each of them are strong, have loads of money going in/out, and each play a little differently. BPL is pushed along by a strong lower league system and promotion/relegation resulting in dynamic seasons with different teams each time, Bundesliga has an amazing fanbase and fast, pressing style of play, and La Liga has no defense and spectacular players (Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi, Falcao, to name a few). Each have a different style and fanbase, and each year they all come together and field their top teams for the Champions League (which is how you get games like Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea last year). As far as over here there's multiple South American leagues (Brasil has the strongest), and then Liga MX (Mexican) and MLS (American/Canadian). They're not on the same level as overseas by any stretch of the imagination, but fans are passionate, games are good, and when some of them come together (CONCACAF Champions League, takes inspiration from European Champs League) it makes for some interesting intra-country games. That's all I've got, and I may have totally missed the point, but whatever. I'm most excited about MLS starting back up since supporting the BPL team I do is like pulling teeth sometimes, and I no longer have to wake up at 8AM to catch live games. Also go Germany or something I guess. Not that they're doing any more than playing friendlies right now.
deanb
My understanding is within the Us it's the womens soccer that is the one to watch. Also temptation to rename the thread is strong. Anywho here's a picture of me as a child mascot for Leeds United. I'm not much into the sport. My grandad would be the primary Leeds supporter in the family, but his season ticket is with Darlington FC, one of the local clubs. Goes there with my brother now n then too.
TheFlyingGerbil
The Italian League is supposed to good too, though I can't profess to know much/anything about football. My great, great Granddad was one of the founders of Liverpool Football Club: This is a squad photo from the 1893/4 season. He's the first suited one, top left. Unfortunately, that has not resulted in vast wealth and an extravagant footballers lifestyle, but it's still a cool little fact to have about our family. Luftwaffles
Dean: Pretty sure on the international level American Women's soccer is followed a bit more than the Men's, but that's likely only because they're a bit nicer to look at and they actually win every once and a while. I think Americans are still sort of learning how to support soccer teams, when they win and when they lose.
Waldorf and Statler
I was personally speaking of just country football/futbol/soccer. League/Premiere/Whatever soccer doesn't interest me. I enjoy a match if my friends are watching but I feel no emotional connection to the team. Same with NFL. I love college football and country soccer because I can feel connections with the countries.
Luftwaffles
Yeah, the international competitions are my favorite too. They just happen so rarely, so I usually find myself following multiple club teams in the meantime.
TheFlyingGerbil
is it true a lot of american's don't like it because there aren't frequent enough goals?
Waldorf and Statler
Yep. My friends have stated that outright on multiple occasions. They feel that there is almost no excitement to ALMOST making a goal or seeing a beautiful repetition of what could have been one I won't disagree that a lot of soccer is ruined with the Shakespeare play acting by players but I see it as part of the charm nowadays. Plus watching a sport in 1 hour and 45 minutes vs 4 hours is better. I won't waste my whole day watching the game.
Luftwaffles
is it true a lot of american's don't like it because there aren't frequent enough goals? Yes, sadly.
TheRevanchist
Also, have you heard the American announcers? They might as well be talking about the reproductive nature of ferns. Personally, I don't have love for soccer, but, when you have a good crew calling the game, that makes a big difference. I've watched a few international matches with good announcers, and those were fun to watch because of it.
Waldorf and Statler
Yeah announcers play a huge part. I think it's because all of their good ones are on American Football. But I've noticed that being TOO familiar with the sport in the culture can also lead to another problem: low-class. Watching a match in a channel like one of the cable mexican channels can get grating when the announcers are talking about the history as to why Venezuela has maroon for a shirt and then proceed to discuss and research it when a match is going on. Luftwaffles
So, MLS started this weekend. All in all it was a pretty good weekend of soccer (the New York - Portland game shown on ESPN was in particular quite good), and there were some pretty good goals. So. You should all watch some games or something. They're good fun, and most air at reasonable times.
Waldorf and Statler
God damn my country played fantastically. 5-0. We haven't gone to a world cup since like 98. I'm excited.
Luftwaffles
Well you have some pretty good players now. Falcao, Muriel, Guarin, definitely stacked for attacking players. In other news, England beat up on a bunch of accountants and bankers, and Spain and Finland tied 1-1.
Waldorf and Statler
Anyday Spain doesn't win is a good day
Luftwaffles
Agreed. And the US beat Costa Rica. In a lot of snow.
Mal
That must be brutal, more so than football (US).
TheFlyingGerbil
What's wrong with Spain?
Luftwaffles
They win everything, they'll qualify anyway. Gotta love seeing them lose to a team like Finland every once and a while.
