TheRevanchist
Well, FIFA is in the news a lot today. The surprising part is that the US is the nation leading the charge to arrest people for corruption within FIFA. This is going to be interesting, as this is really an international bust that could play out in nasty ways politically.
Mr. GOH!
What I've heard is that 2018 and 2022 are set even if these guys all are found or plead guilty and even if FIFA head Sepp Blatter goes down due to some of the arrested men flipping. Switzerland is also investigating, now, and the Swiss investigation is more comprehensive; although the US indictment and case will contain a lot of colorful details regarding the rampant corruption in FIFA, the core lawbreaking deals with bribes and kickbacks and fraud in securing FIFA broadcast rights rather than the vote scandal, I believe, The Swiss investigation is into the World Cup host voting scandal. I may try to attend some of the hearings in this case, if I can get in, as I often work in the courthouse in which they'll be held.

Thursday Next
I may try to attend some of the hearings in this case, if I can get in, as I often work in the courthouse in which they'll be held. I for one would love to read your thoughts on them if you did attend. As for it being odd that the US is leading the charge, the US are probably the biggest nation with the fewest vested interests tied to the game. It kinda makes sense that they would be the ones that are happiest to tear it apart.
deanb
Apart from having the least ties to the game at large, the investigation did start not long after the US' failed bid for the 2022 World Cup in 2010. Not related of course.
Thursday Next
I don't think it's a personal vendetta born of sour grapes on missing out. It was however the cause of a lot of people calling corruption. It was probably just enough volume to get on the US radar and when they saw the money going through US accounts they just thought "go for it." Also, new DA probably wants a feather in his cap. Mal
http://gfycat.com/WellmadeBitterDotterel Just the link since it doesn't autoplay (for me anyway). England commit sudoku against Japan in the Women's World Cup. The running joke and the wish was for an England win so we could have a Revolutionary match on Sunday July 5th. I guess Sunday will ether be Pearl Harbor or the Battle of Midway. Saturday will be England versus Germany. Since I don't have cable or anything, I need to figure out ways to watch soccer/football online... I kind of want to get into it... minus the politics...
TheFlyingGerbil
I feel borderline treasonous for not caring about the football at this point.

Mr. GOH!
Why are you guys talking about football in the clearly-labeled soccer thread?

deanb
So I figured I'd get in on some of the world cup fever, n since it popped up on my PS4 anyway, gave the Eng-Tun match a watch in the VR apphttps://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44038006 Can get it on Google Cardboard n Oculus/Samsung too. It's alright, not sure it'd at all ideal way to watch a game but it's certainly different. The tiny guy that joins you in the skybox is a bit fucking creepy though. Also I tried to take a screenshot to share but quelle surprise it's all blocked content.

TheFlyingGerbil
I have Korea in the work sweepstake, though I still doubt I should start spending the money quite yet
MetalCaveman
Well, Korea is out now, thing is, since they won over Germany, that saved Mexico, who was against the wall after that dreadful performance (3-0 vs Sweden), so now we're all thankful for them, and extremely worried about the next phase. TheFlyingGerbil
poo. the dude doing the sweepstake did give us an update of how everyone needed to do to get through. Maybe I was mixing them up with Portugal, my other team. As you can tell I do not follow it super closely.

TheFlyingGerbil
So Wrexham is my local team, and while I am still not a football fan it is cool that Wrexham AFC just secured a promotion tonight. It's still rather odd to hear all the hullabaloo going on. The matches were really loud when you're in town which I've not heard for years so you can feel the excitement. Apparently we're a tourist destination for USA-ans now, which is just bonkers and there seems to be more hollywood stars here than London on a match night. Ryan Reynolds is apparently buying a house in the village I live in too so may run in to him (or his assistant more likely) when I pop into the local shop on the way home from work. Wonder how long it will all go on for. 1
