Waldorf and Statler
The number 42 is not the meaning of life stop saying it is facebook friends who think they're geeky because they read a book everybody reads in English AP back in high school and completely forgot what it's supposed to actually be god dammit. And for that matter I don't have a problem with people wanting to be part of geek culture but I don't appreciate you sharing the "I Fucking Love Science" feed on my wall with your super sassy comment like "this is who I am deal with it". Nobody cares if you're pretending to be a geek to seem smart FUCK YOU I am well aware what it means to be a geek since I cream my panties when a new RPG is announced. FUCK YOU. I FUCKING HATE YOU. WHY CAN'T YOU BE DEAD. I HATE YOU. I'LL SHOVE MY KINDLE DOWN YOUR THROAT AND SEE IF YOU GET THE MESSAGE ABOUT WHAT A TYPICAL SCI FI GEEK READS.

Hot Heart
I saw that thing about assigning numbers to the letters in 'MATH' based on where they appear in the alphabet and it adds up to 42, therefore, Douglas Adams was saying the meaning of life is 'math'. Was really tempted to reply with something like, "Douglas Adams was English. So the word is 'maths', idiots."

Mercurial
Posers are not a new phenomenon. Unlike geeks however metal has a much better way of dealing with them.
UnstableArk
I know 42 is always the first number in an unseeded rand() random number generator function in C++. Maybe that's the reference? Maybe? ...maybe?
TheMightyEthan
The number 42 is not the meaning of life I KNOW! It's the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything! Gah, get it right!
Waldorf and Statler
If I even recall correctly in the book itself they ask "What's the meaning of life" and the computer says "42" and then they say it makes no sense and the computer corrects that it is not the meaning of life but the ultimate answer to the ultimate question
TheMightyEthan
They ask the computer to compute the answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe and Everything, it comes back with 42, they say that makes no sense and ask what the question is, it says I don't know you'll have to build a better computer. Eleven
Is that from The Last Question? Seems familiar. Though that wasn't a book, right?
TheMightyEthan
It's from somewhere in the book series, don't remember which book specifically though.
deanb
It's from the first H2G2, Deep Thought is built to compute the meaning of life, then builds Earth to compute the question. Which is blown up minutes before the question is calculated. 42 Stravo Mueller's Beta is the night club where they're at in the (proper) last book where with the aid of the Second Edition H2G2 (The one that can travel between all realities) the Vogons obliterate the last Earth and all reality with it.So I've always taken it to be "where does it all end?"
