deanb
http://www.oculusvr.com/ Seems to have sparked a fair bit of hype within the gaming community. Personally I'm in the "VR has flopped a thousand and one times before now" camp, so not got much hope for it (especially as it's £200+ for the DIY devkits). Seems more iteration (newer smaller/high res screens, tad more responsive n so on) of prior VR than meant to be anything mind blowingly new, but I guess it's that time again to be sparked with this. So, thoughts?
TheMightyEthan
I agree that VR has flopped a million times before, but I think it's a tech thing, and sooner or later the tech will get good enough to make it work and it will be awesome. Having not used an Oculus I can't say whether that's this or not. The one problem I could see the tech being unable to overcome is motion sickness, and really that just depends on how many people suffer from it and whether it's enough to prevent this being successful. The other thing is price but new gadgets are always hugely expensive at first.
Luftwaffles
I think it'll flop. The way I see it, it appeals to a few markets. 1) Those with a passing interest in VR and disposable income who will use it for stuff like TF2 or any other games that choose to support it. 2) Those into flight sims, racing sims, and the like where the Rift will take advantage of features that are already there and don't need to be hacked into the game (like TF2's implementation of the players' head moving independent of the body vs. Arma's native support). The problem with that is that group 1 will likely lose interest after finding out it doesn't really help with much other than immersion (so it won't do for folks looking to be the best at everything), and I don't think the device will sell enough at its current pricepoint to warrant devs adding support for it in in future titles (see TrackIR support in current FPSs or racing games). In addition, group 2 is and will always be an incredibly niche market, and although they don't have any trouble splashing the cash on expensive accessories like the Rift, most of my friends into those types of games already have loads of accessories they're happy with, including multiple monitor setups and TrackIRs (which won't work in tandem with the Rift). TheMightyEthan
A good writeup on PAR.
deanb
Oh, well sucks on the resolution. I kinda figured with the kind of stuff we've gotten these days that might be the big "this is why the Oculus is a big step in VR from older kits". So I'm back to square one on trying to understand why it's suddenly a big deal. Not sure if Kuchera fully grasps astigmatism, since his response seems like a "yeah he can wear glasses inside the rift" rather than a "yeah his rugby ball shaped eye ball doesn't mean the effect is lost". As far as expensive accessories go, I figure it'll be along the lines of the amBX.
TheMightyEthan
Supposedly the consumer version is going to have higher resolution, and that's something that can increase over time anyway without having to break compatibility. TheFlyingGerbil
that's mental. I like the idea of immersion but that's actually put me off a bit. i don't want gaming to be a traumatic experience.

deanb
Yeah why is he stood up, who stands up for a rollercoaster? (tbh I can't see someone being that "active" during playing with the Rift to be flailing about and such as much as he did there).
TheMightyEthan
I could see the roller coaster visuals throwing off your sense of equilibrium and making you stumble/flail to try to keep balance.

Mister Jack
Andrew Scott Reisse, co-founder of Oculus VR, was killed in a hit and run on Thursday by gang members who were fleeing police. I've always been skeptical of the Oculus Rift, but it's still sad that he won't get to see his invention released to the general public. TheMightyEthan
The fact that it happened while they were fleeing police makes it felony murder, and they were all on probation at the time... Those kids are going away for a while.
Mercurial
While I agree they should be charged harshly felony murder is such a stupid law.
TheMightyEthan
I agree there are instances where it's applied stupidly (two guys break into a house, one gets shot by owner and dies, other burglar charged with murder), but I think in this kind of situation it makes sense. Wait, that actually happens? I agree that felony murder is totally applicable in this instance though.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah. Some states have made exceptions though so that it doesn't apply if a co-conspirator is killed by a victim or law enforcement.
Mercurial
Sure there should be aggravating variables because they were running from the police, but what would normally be charged as manslaughter suddenly be charged as first degree murder is ridiculous. TheMightyEthan
Well the idea is that you're intentionally committing an inherently dangerous crime, and due to that inherent danger someone died, so the intent to do the inherently dangerous thing is carried over to the death, which I think makes sense.
TheMightyEthan
Oculus Rift support is being integrated into Unreal Engine 4. That should go a long way toward getting this thing more support.
