Mr. GOH!
Apparently the XCOM shooter is no more. I'm ok with that. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123275-Troubled-XCOM-Shooters-Website-Disappears I get no end of pleasure from the theory that XCOM: EU's success killed the XCOM shooter. Fuck you, video game publishers, good games will sell and not every games needs to be a cover-based shooter.
TheMightyEthan
I think the primary theory atm is that they're rebranding it to be not XCOM anymore.
Waldorf and Statler
You're right Mr. GOH not every game needs to be a cover shooter. Now a cover tactic game? TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

Fuck you, video game publishers, good games will sell and not every games needs to be a cover-based shooter. That's kind of a stupid attitude, imho. Sure, it was disappointing that they were turning XCOM into an FPS, but now that a proper XCOM has come out, I wouldn't mind getting the shooter. The original gameplay they showed had a nice visual style to it. At this point, it probably has nothing to do with what they showed back then, though. deanb
The shooter is very likely still coming, it just won't be branded as "XCOM". Which yeah checking the Escapist link it also mentions the whole "it's now The Bureau" thing.

Waldorf and Statler
I'm not disagreeing. I'm just really careful about the connotation and significance of using certain words. Not to say you aren't though. Let's just drop it baby.

A careful reading of my comment will reveal that I wasn't denigrating the shooter. I was, rather, denigrating the ill-founded belief that the only games to sell well are FPS or TPS games. The FPS looks interesting, but it sure as hell is not XCOM. The rebranding is a *good* thing for that game. Edited April 22, 2013 by Mr. GOH! toxicitizen
The part of your comment I took issue with was I get no end of pleasure from the theory that XCOM: EU's success killed the XCOM shooter. I just don't see how the game getting killed would benefit anyone. It might make angry fans feel vindicated but seriously, who cares about that. I'm with you on the rebranding being good for the game, though, but only because it probably doesn't need to be an XCOM title and at this point, it would probably suffer from the brand more than anything. But I'd be fine with the existence of an XCOM shooter, personally. There's been one before. As long as the series itself isn't becoming a shooter (and most of the initial outrage stemmed from that exact fear), then I would welcome a shared universe across different genres. And the funny thing is, when they first announced the shooter, EU was already well into development at Firaxis. I'm with you there. I don't mind a spinoff in a different genre (for instance, Starcraft Ghost could have been awesome), but it saddens me when a beloved series moves genres to become more mainstream. Mr. GOH!
I'm just happy that EU did well enough that folks find that theory plausible. Also, I meant "killed" in a broader scope, as in, the idea of making an XCOM-branded shooter. My fault for not being specific.
toxicitizen
http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/04/24/xcom-shooter-reveal-coming-soon?abthid=5177bc5492b473ef1f000005 This sounds a lot like the game is still set in the XCOM universe. It's all kinda vague so I'm not taking it as a confirmation but it's to be unvealed soon so we'll see.
Mister Jack
So the FPS game is now called The Bureau: XCOM Declassified and has been changed to a "third person squad based tactical shooter." Not sure if want.
Mr. GOH!
If it's really tactical, rather than whatever the hell Mass Effect 2 and 3 were, I'm in.
toxicitizen
I have to say I'm a bit meh on the switch to third-person. I much prefer the first-person POV. But still, I won't be so quick to dismiss it. If it's actually as tactical as they claim, it could be pretty great. Then again, if it is, it sounds like they're trying to make it as much like EU as possible, which kinda makes me wonder why. This game should be its own thing, not just trying to ape EU because it was successful. But anyway, the only thing I hope now is that, if they insist it's in the same universe as the XCOM:EU, then that it doesn't feel too stylistically different. This had kind of a unique look last time we saw it while XCOM:EU looks a tad more... cartoony, I guess? But still, more XCOM and it's coming out soonish. Can't complain. Mister Jack
If it's like Rainbow Six Vegas I could get on board with the concept.
toxicitizen
Yeah, I loved the Vegas games. It really wasn't the same Rainbow Six but they were fun as hell.
deanb
Split off from the Enemy Unknown topic. Also here be a live action trailer. They seem to be getting common of late.
toxicitizen
Why not just remove the Enemy Unknown part of the title and have one big "everything XCOM" thread? Anyway, that trailer is awesome, but man I'm getting sick of the live-action stuff. If you're unveiling something, show some fucking gameplay! Keep the live-action stuff for later. If it's actually coming out in August, then they should have something to show...
Mister Jack
Some snippits of gameplay.
BrainHurtBoy...2
It's bizarre seeing the game gradually get less and less interesting. The first version at least looked interesting in its weirdness. This seems generic and boring, to me. Also seems a bit similar to some levels in Resistance 2. toxicitizen
Looks like the writer of Spec Ops: The Line is involved. That's pretty cool. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-05-13-xcoms-new-perspective-how-the-bureau-stays-true-to-the-originals-strategic-heart?utm_source=feedly
Waldorf and Statler
I'm interested primarily for the heavy emphasis on tactics and thinking stuff through on a TPS that tends to only be seen in Bioware titles.
