Star Wars

Taking some encouragement from Dean, I'm surprised we don't have a thread about this already, considering there are at most 3 of us who still love SW.

In reviewing some of the history of the original films and combining it with what we know, some of the first SW movies were shot in the UK.  And, since it's been announced that there is a return to the UK for the next movie's filming, can we assume that some of the same planets will be revisited?  Obviously, Endor seems a little too far out-of-sorts for another shot, as there wasn't much there in the first place beyond the Ewoks, which were not nearly as bad some people made them out to be.

And, for those who read comics, Star Wars Legacy might be up your alley: http://www.newsarama.com/17804-in-a-galaxy-far-away-3-hardman-bechko-chart-star-wars-legacy.html

And, today is George Lucas's birthday.  He turns 69 (insert dirty joke here) today.

Seems we have another animated series on the way.  This one to air on Disney Channel, so you know it's going to blow goats.  I'm sure they will Disney it to death with a tween rebel leader who also sings while going to school with friends.  They meet in the hallways and talk about how it feels to be a rebel, making friends along the way, and learning what it means to share.

More details about Filoni and others working on this project here:

Seems the premiere episode has the potential to be good, but beyond that is questionable.

I love Star Wars, I have the movies dialogue almost memorized entirely. I can explain to people why things are a certain way in the films. I enjoyed Episode 2 and 3 (on their own merit of course), and I have a Darth Vader Prop lightsaber. I've read numerous books in the EU, and am part of the "Han shot first" fanbase.

When I read that Disney bought the franchise, I looked at what they did with Marvel and though "oh this could be good or bad." I took the wait and see method. When they announced episode 7-9 I thought "Oh no, we don't need more movies. Maybe this will be good?" When they said Lucas was going to give up the entire creative rights to Disney I thought "Ok, this sounds like it could be interesting." Then when they announced JJ Abrams to be the writer/director of VII, I checked out.

Abrams has done some great work, and Star Trek is just amazing, so why am I so resistant to him directing Star Wars? Because he did such a good job with Star Trek. He has his space opera, and to put him to work on another one will just make both start to feel similar, and eventually bland. Abrams stated that he used Star Wars to help make the atmosphere of the new Star Trek movies feel more action-y. He already Star Warsified Star Trek, so now the gap between the two is even smaller. I'd like to get someone fresh in Star Wars, someone who is capable of creating this kind of fantasy sci fi series, make it feel new and unique without dropping what made it great, because having Abrams direct it is going to make people think of Star Trek in some way.

Honestly I would love to see Abrams direct a re-imagining of the original trilogy, but we all wont see that happen. I want to see what the Original Star Wars script was played out as, with the amazing concept art and this adventure to find the space cristal. Abrams could do wonders with that, create his own unique feel and no one would mind.

I still love the franchise, but for the amount of time I've spent thinking, reading and watching the series, I am surprised in my lack of enthusiasm for the new revival of the series.

I think you underestimate JJA. Star Trek doesn't feel in the least bit Star Wars to me. The only bit that in hindsight felt remotely Star Wars was the bit at the start on that red planet.

For Star Wars he can play up the fantasy elements and dump any of the science. Also, with Star Trek a lot of the writing depends on re-staging established scenes e.g. Uhura kissing Spock instead of Kirk, for Star Wars that's not on the cards. You're not gonna have a film where Leia kisses Chewie and Han gets his hand chopped off, so his approach has to be different.

For someone who is waiting and seeing, you've neither waited nor seen much, which is not exactly a problem since unenthusiasm is a perfectly reasonable response to being entirely uninformed.

Seems that EA is going to do some Star Wars pushing at E3, which actually has me pretty pumped up.

I might buy an iPad, just for this.

I actually saw Episode 5 the other day for the first time in ages and I can't say that I thought many of the things that were happening in the plot were believable. I'm not sure if it was a matter of mediocre script writing, bad acting, or a combination of both but I couldn't find any enjoyment outside of it being some fluffy easy to follow sci-fi story. Just motivations and actions seemed very off in a lot of small ways. The overall plot worked but the way characters reacted to situations or even when there wasn't much going on just didn't seem to fit. Then again, maybe I'm just making the mistake of trying to take it too seriously.

So we've wrapped up Revenge of the Sith, likely watching Return of the Jedi tomorrow night or on Thursday.

Housemate brought up a point. When Senator Organa takes Leia back with him to Alderaan what's worse: to say the baby is that of recently deceased Senator Amidala, of whom he has worked with for many years, ;) . Or that the baby is that of Darth Vader, the Sith right hand man of Emperor Palpatine. In fact he probably doens't have much more than that to go on, they were still trying to piece it together during the whole charade.

Finished up Machete Order. Do it. Especially if it has been a while since watching Star Wars, and especially if you've people who have yet to watch it. It really came together with going from III, the fall of Anakin to the Dark Side, to VI, with his eventual redemption. Still miffed on the young Anakin force ghost though.

Oh and maybe wedge in some of the Robot Chicken specials in there, and if the person you're watching with knows of the Luke-Leia sibling thing. Cos fuck that makes it oh so much more hilarious. Especially the looks given on the realisation of "oh shit, they kissed" "oh shit, we kissed".
