Star Wars

I'm excited! I'll be honest, Episodes 1-3 kind of made me less excited for new movies. The way Lucas wrote those films makes certain tropes a requirement for Star Wars now, which means that we'll see a lot of new stuff but its all going to fall under these odd rules that didn't exist for 4-6. I hope this movie follows tropes from the original trilogy more than the ones we were introduced in the prequels. I'm leaning more towards exciting magical knights rather than boring diplomatic monks for the Jedi.

I just finished re-watching the movies in Machete Order. I have recommended it to everyone who hasn't seen the series but I've never actually watched the movies in that order my self. I can quote the movies in my sleep so I figured I know whats best and Machete Order seems to be the superior way to enjoy the prequels and the original series.

I don't know if I can recommend it to anyone who isn't that interested in the Star Wars lore now that I've watched it. Sure I'm enjoying watching the tension between Vader and Luke grow as we learn about how Anakin turned to the dark side, but after watching IV, V, II, III, VI it really shows how much the prequel trilogy missed the mark of the original trilogy.

I know everybody has shared their ideas on how to make the prequel trilogy better but I have a hand full of complaints that I've been wanting to tell anyone who would be interested.

1) Why is the story about Anakin's fall to the dark side? We know that he becomes Vader, why cant the movies focus on how Obi-Wan failed Anakin and as a result destroying the Republic? Anakin turning to Vader isn't a plot twist, neither is Palpatine becoming the emperor. We know that, why can't we learn about the complication that forced Obi-Wan and Owen tension.

2) Speaking of Obi-Wan and Owen, why does Anakin have to be from Tatooine? In the original movie, Luke says "If there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from." I've always interpreted this as Owen (and also Obi-Wan) as running as far away from the Empire as possible. They are so far out of the central powers they are on the fringe with the villain and scum of the universe because they are so afraid of the Empire and Vader. Now that theory doesn't make sense, if Anakin is from Tatooine then why on earth would they hide on his home planet?

3) I hated all of Lucas' winking and nodding every time he referenced a character from the original trilogy. Oh you know Jabba the Hutt? Well his whole family is in this movie! You know Boba Fett, here's someone exactly like him! Chewbacca? Yeah hes in it too! Look everybody it's Star Wars! pffft (that is an attempt to make fart noises).

Ultimately the entire prequel trilogy failed because it was an attempt to explain the original trilogy rather than creating a new story with new locations and new characters that lead us to the final sequence of Obi-Wan passing the torch to Luke... Very much the way The Force Awakens is the original cast passing the torch to the new cast.

Thats my feelings on it. I'm sure many of us could go on and on and on about what is wrong with the prequel movies, but having just finished the entire series (san's episode I) its fresh on my mind.

On the whole "dumping Luke on Tattoine" thing, it's where Darth Vader was raised as a slave, and on his final trip there had his mother die in his arms. It's not a place he'll be going back to anytime soon. Especially given nature of the force n leaving imprints on places, it likely gives him the force heebejeebies.

Other than that it is as noted in the film on the outer fringe of the galaxy, far away from the galactic centre and empire so unlikely someone might bump into either Ben Kenobi or Luke Skywalker n go running to Darth Vader to report it.

There were three bad F&F movies in a row? Even if there were, the last few have been good (for F&F movies), so any excitement is justified.

James Bond is the series that comes to mind for me, actually. Not as much excitement as for Star Wars or F&F, though.

There were at least six bad FF movies in a row.

What about batmans? Returns, Forever and & Robin were bobbins. Nolan trilogy was good if not great.

Batman Returns wasnt a bad movie though. At the time people liked it and it was reviewed pretty decently. No one has ever said that BR helped in destroying the Batman franchise. This might be one of the first.

Even Forever isnt as bad as SW prequels. The comparison just isnt there.

Batman is another good example.

And your lack of appreciation for early F&F movies is disturbing, but not as disturbing as your lack of appreciation in the pivotal Fast Five.

Edit: lolwut. Batman Forever is as bad as Phantom Menace.

It has one thing over Phantom Menace...its not boring as fuck. Its stupid as shit, but at least its entertaining. Theres no nonsensical political drama and shitty love story to clog everything up.

Ok, so Batman Returns isn't too bad, but Revenge of the Sith is also not *that* bad. If we're talking about a great franchise with some lacklustre films, then a revival, Batman totally fits that mould.

Star Trek is another good candidate for picking up an ailing franchise.

If you are looking for a set of three ok films, followed by a set of three worse films then everyone being hyped for another three films, well, there aren't many franchises that release in trilogies and fewer still that have done it twice and even less that are on to their third trilogy. You may need to relax your parameters a bit.

I actually like Revenge Of The Sith. It was a fun movie. And unlike the other 2, things actually happen in this and there are tons of fights and people die and so on.

My thinly veiled point was that its bothersome that the same people that claimed their childhood was raped are still excited for a new SW movies, shit they seem to like everything new SW. Its like they like abuse.

Im a casual SW fan, so Im actually sure this new one will be good. Not because of the director or the cast, but because it's Disney. They cant fuck this up as badly as Lucas did.

And thats really the difference - the average movie goer will forget and forgive, but the hardcore fans wont. We WILL see 5 bad FF films in a row, but once we hear there are good reviews for a new one, we'll go see it. We dont hold judges.

Its the nerds that annoy me.
