TheFlyingGerbil
Any interesting news or observations - that maybe don't warrant their own thread - but you don't want to leave to the vagaries of a status update.
TheFlyingGerbil
Curiosity: What's inside the cube? has been beaten and it turns out the prize actually sounds pretty decent. It's a chance to play god in Molyneux's new game, helping decide the morality system and sharing in the profits of the game. That's got to be pretty cool, right? NeoStarr
I'm getting too far in this game to fuck up my character; Can somebody tell me what the point of leveling the attack skill in Dust: An Elysian Tail is? Or should I just avoid it? I know it does more damage but that's pointless considering you get more xp for hitting guys more times.

From what I recall I did a good balance on attack/health and barely touched magic.
NeoStarr
Here is an absolutely cringe list of potential names for the original xbox. I can't settle on which is worse as I just stare at the whole list in disbelief. If "X-Box" had made it on that list it still would have been cringe worthy. We just grow accustomed the stupid names we give shit. I mean, Nintendo has a console that is literally named after piss and nobody bats an eye. Saturnine Tenshi
To be fair the name of Nintendo's system is pretty fitting. Probably should have named it Poop.
Luftwaffles
http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/ryan-davis-1979-2013/1100-4685/ Ryan Davis of GiantBomb died July 3rd. While I can't say I met him or knew him personally, it's still pretty sad; he always seemed like a nice, levelheaded guy on their videos and podcasts. Site certainly won't be the same without him. He was also on his honeymoon and had a pretty messed up lastish tweet. Just sad all around, the gaming press lost a good dude.

TheFlyingGerbil
TED talk from the design curator at MoMA on why she wanted games in there. It's an interesting watch and an interesting point that great design doesn't and shouldn't try to be art. edit: It's been sat in a tab for a few days so I hope it wasn't here I got it from - apologies if it was. CorgiShinobi
I'll follow this up with another amazing Extra Credits episode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA2rQqCdSjI This explains me pretty well right now. I'm currently employed in a job right now, but I wouldn't be making it if I still didn't have the support of my parents. It makes me feel a bit guilty about spending money on entertainment purposes, but I've also tried to break out of this job field I'm in with little positive results. There's such a great sense of no control in life that we begin to believe that others do have that control over us. Games give us control over a world we find ourselves in, whether it's one of fantasy or science. Ones where we can get lost in the immersion of competitive play or fantastic stories woven my specialized minds. You're given clear objectives, and you know your skills and limitations. Things are set and there is a path before you if you pursue it. It's what we'd like in life, but it gets muddle in so many affairs because there are millions just like us existing in the real world. TheMightyEthan
Goddamn, wouldn't it be great if IRL there were clearly marked quest givers, and then waypoints to tell you how to complete the quests?
Faiblesse Des Sens
Goddamn, wouldn't it be great if IRL there were clearly marked quest givers, and then waypoints to tell you how to complete the quests? Can you imagine the elitism of playing a game "hardcore" spreading to real life when people turn these features off?
Mal
Comiket 84 is going on and with that comes some indie Japanese games. Of course there are plenty of shumps, Touhou inspired stuff and just plain crap everywhere but there are a few gems I think. What have caught my eyes are from this video: Magical Battle Festa - A 3D beat them up. Decent visuals and looks solid enough. Ghost 93 - An odd 2D game where you can switch dimensions as in change from X and Z axises and even go first person. Nonet Concerto Distortion - 3D beat them up. Look a bit odd but seems workable. Mana Collect - Odd puzzle game of sorts? Perilous Dimension - More of a tech demo than anything. Can use the Oculus Rift. Toho Soccer Two Rebirth - Touhou soccer game in the vein of the SNES classic Captain Tsubasa games. Versh - Raiden clone SwarmSweeper Prototype - Interesting concept. Revolver360 Re:Actor - Side scroller where you can switch "paths". Good visuals. アスタブリード(Edelweiss) - Mecha rail shump. Great visuals. Homura Combat Plus - OMFG A EDF CLONE. Madoka character Rime Berta - RPG inline with Disgaea and Tactics. Seems weak but I can respect the dev for doing a game like this. Sola and Piyo-chan: The Future Detective - Detective game, made like a light novel of sorts? Seems nice. 東方活劇綺談ONLINE 2nd Edition - Touhou side scroller. Seems nice. Battle Raiders - Touhou RTS RPG. Interesting setup? Last few I can't comment on since its just screen shots and shit. Palette Palette looks interesting. Princess Trap as well. さこそ仇なる色に咲くとも 第一部 is a visual novel and seems polished. I'm quite sure there are a lot more games than this but yeah. Just my impressions from the video.
TheFlyingGerbil
Sega are buying Atlas owners, Index, for ¥14b. I'm sure I remember people saying that there would be splits between the developer and publisher parts and all sorts of problems with IP rights being split. So is this good news? It means at least they will finally have a presence in Europe which has got to be an improvement. Sega set up a new company to deal with it called Sega Dream Corporation, if they started using their dreamcast logo on games that would be cool, though not entirely likely. Saturnine Tenshi
Sega isn't so great about bringing games (or allowing them to be brought) to the West, though.

Mal
I... don't know how and cannot explain this. This is by far the worst W:L stats I have ever had. Don't care for K:D since all that matters is winning the match. I know I do go solo and shit as commander A LOT but that seemed like it was going 50/50... I should pick up a few more servers to play on. The one for RS at least have a good amount of people most of the time so it all balances out... now that I think about it, RS is currently sitting at 17 games won and lost each. I think part of my game stats moved over to RO2? I could just suck.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Maybe don't go solo a lot and don't be commander?
Mal
Maybe. Its my late night dicking around sessions. It is pretty nice to purge the Soviet AI that get caught in a loop... not to mention that I'm not afraid to jump into the commander spot if it is not taken and that one or two arty is all we need to advance or hold. I just got to learn to force respawn on crucial moments. Again though... 0.08 is way lower than I imagined. Another odd thing is that even if time runs out for the attackers and they run out of tickets... me being a defender would lose. Not sure what is going on. staySICK
I'm going to reply to FLD here, because I think it's more OT here than the Batman thread: That said, without playing the game, I liked Sterling's assessment of the game, and the industry in general with the last two paragraphs You might enjoy his show Jimquisition, then. New episodes are posted on The Escapist first but there's a ton of them on youtube. It's mostly him commenting on current affairs related to the games industry. Like I said earlier in the thread, Sterling and I aren't really on the same page when it comes to game reviews. But he's usually spot-on on Jimquisition. I started watching the show a couple months ago and it's made me gain a lot of respect for the man.On a semi-related note, it seems he left Destructoid today. This soon after the Arkham Origins reviews, it's hard not to wonder if there isn't some kind of correlation, however small. Yeah I've been meaning to check those out. And he said there's no correlation between the AO review, and he's still got one more coming for Dtoid before he officially leaves: COD Ghosts. That oughtta be a hoot.
