toxicitizen
Well, this is an unexpected development. Joyoland, the company that ported and released some of Falcom's games for the Chinese PC market, have put the missing Ys games as well as Zero/Ao no Kiseki up on Steam Greenlight. These are the Chinese language versions, obviously, and apparently their DRM makes them run so poorly that they become borderline unplayable. I voted Yes because why not, I guess. Hopefully this somehow facilitates XSEED being able to localize these versions. They've hinted at Zero and Ao being possibilities before but never the Ys games. It'd be nice to be able to circumvent the PSP version of Ys Seven entirely. I just really hope that Joyoland wanting to publish them on Steam themselves doesn't somehow complicate things for an english release by XSEED. Mal
A bit awkwardly presented and long (1h:25m) but this is an amazing talk at 27 minutes in. Mark Farrari, 8-bit art God, talks about 8-bit and 8-bitish art. Remember this or this? He's the guy behind them and the 80's LucasArts games (e.g., Monkey Island). Just how he does things back then, how he does it now and things going forward.

toxicitizen
Yeah, looks like they deleted them from Greenlight for some reason. It's odd but I'll remain optimistic until I have a reason not to. In an ideal world, they simply acted without consulting Falcom and were told no because they were stepping on XSEED's toes. Honestly, I kinda hope that's what happened. Obviously, I have zero interest in buying the Chinese versions of the games and I'm not too keen on using fan translations either. If Joyoland getting on Steam has even the tiniest of chance of preventing XSEED from ever touching the games, then they can fuck right off. Mister Jack
I see a lot of people comparing Resident Evil 7 to games like Amnesia and Outlast (usually unfavorably) and saying that RE7 is just another game about running away and hiding, but I really can't agree with this assessment for one simple reason. Resident Evil has weapons. Yeah, I know that's pretty obvious, but I think that's why I like RE7 better than those other games. For me, it's not about just liking to shoot guns (though I do like shooting guns). I think that having some means to fight back helps the pacing immensely. In Outlast, you are completely defenseless, which a lot of people say is scarier. I understand that, but I can't say I agree. It's scarier at first, I suppose, but the longer the game goes on, the more annoyed I get that my progress is dictated by whether or not the spooky monster is currently standing in front of whatever item or puzzle I need to move on. You can't continue the game until the monster or inmate or whatever moves away, so eventually I'll be crouching under a table or something, groaning and going "Come on! Fucking move already!" It totally breaks the flow of the game, as well as any immersion i might have had. I think the reason I enjoy RE7 so much is that it gives you the means to just barely fight back. Once you get good at the game you can probably find enough ammo to blow through most encounters, but I've seen plenty of first time players run out of ammo at a critical moment because they freaked out and starting spraying and praying. If they get their progress blocked, it's their own fault for losing their cool. I think that's a lot more interesting than hiding under a table and waiting. The way I see it, having a weapon that you empty sloppily and ineffectively into a monster because you lost your nerve can be just as intense as having no weapon at all. Resident Evil has weapons. People that are still comparing RE7 to Amnesia and Outlast either haven't played RE7 or played a very different game than I did because yeah, it really isn't anything like that beyond the superficial "But but but it's first-person!" complaint. It was a valid concern prerelease because for months after the announcement Capcom were still being very secretive about what the gameplay was actually like, but the final game is Resident Evil through and through. That being said [...] the longer the game goes on, the more annoyed I get that my progress is dictated by whether or not the spooky monster is currently standing in front of whatever item or puzzle I need to move on. You can't continue the game until the monster or inmate or whatever moves away, so eventually I'll be crouching under a table or something, groaning and going "Come on! Fucking move already!" It totally breaks the flow of the game, as well as any immersion i might have had. I can't say I agree there. These games are basically spooky stealth games. I would argue that hiding and waiting can't possibly break the flow of the game because it's a core part of the flow of the game. Of course, if you don't like that flow then that's completely valid, but hiding is the game. At least, to the same extent that the gun combat is a major defining trait to Resident Evil's identity, which it sounds like you agree with. They're all horror games but I really wouldn't call Outlast survival horror. Amnesia maybe? I don't know, I haven't played a lot of it but iirc there is some minimal resource management with the oil for your lamp or whatever. Anyway, since you seem to love gun combat with limited ammo, I'd recommend you check out The Evil Within if you haven't already. It's basically RE4 but with a bigger emphasis on resource management. There's still a strong stealth element but you're certainly not helpless and I was constantly on the brink of running out of ammo. It also has a pretty cool Silent Hill-esque atmosphere and the plot is not completely dripping with cheese, so it gets points for that as well. Mister Jack
I was curious about The Evil Within but it seemed to get kind of a middling reception so I never got around to it. Would you say it's overblown?
toxicitizen
Yeah, I certainly loved it. That's not to say it's perfect or without flaws but you can probably get it for like 10 bucks at this point and at that price it's a total no-brainer. Especially if you love RE4 but thought it could use a little more survival in its horror.

Mal
XSEED just patched Little King's Story with the direct help of Durante (What can that guy NOT do?). He fixed the stuttering and improved overall performance. 60 FPS mode isn't perfect but it is way better than it was previously.
toxicitizen
Damnit, Mal! I was gonna post about that! But yeah, it's pretty cool that XSEED went to the trouble of seeking out Durante's help to fix up the port. They initially went with a Japanese team because all the comments in the source code were in Japanese, so they figured it would make the work easier. That makes Durante's work here doubly impressive. He certainly has a knack for reverse engineering. Hopefully sales will pick up a bit now that the port is in a much better state. It was kinda sad to see XSEED's first real porting effort bomb like that, even if it was understandable given the state it was in.
CorgiShinobi
In case you haven't read up on GameStop's Circle of Life, Mega64 sums it up nicely. Edited February 9, 2017 by Atomsk88
Mal
Apparently the Circle of Life led to some shady things like replacing a customer's new PS4 with a refurbished one. That and the Circle of Life program as now described would've been hard to believe but after the shit that Wells Fargo pulled (quotas on opening new accounts led to fraudulent accounts opened without consent or knowledge of customers) makes the Circle of Life and shady things a possibility that can happen. TCP
EXCEPT FOR ANYONE WHO POSTS HERE OBVIOUSLY, FLD, JEEZE USE YOUR HEAD. ...Sorry I thought he was a teacher? Wasn't taking a shot at anyone in particular. Also that tall lanky guy who managed my local EB Games 5ish years ago was pretty nice and helpful. Except for when he lost my PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale pre-order, bastard. I think that's around the time I stopped going in regularly. The teenagers I see working their these days? Maybe now but he wasn't always one. Also, holy shit, 2011?!? Goddamn, this place is ancient. This is probably the longest I've been on a forum before it died. Well, there's another one that's technically still up but it gets like one post every two years and it's almost always someone going "holy shit, this place is still up?!". TCP
Ah, I don't think I started posting regularly here till 2012ish. Also, PSABR is the fighting game I've put the most time into. Easily my favourite fighter ever. I double platinumed it! PS3 and Vita!! It's twice the game SSF4 or Smash Bros GC is.
