Gamestop is bringing back rental shops.  Their program is going to be unlimited rentals for six months for sixty bucks and you get to keep the most recent game you rented at the end of those six months.  The only catches seem to be that it only applies to their used games, so you'll have to probably wait a bit for new releases, and you have to be signed up to their rewards program.  I like this, though.  I miss the days of being able to rent games at Blockbuster and would like to see it come back.  Redbox is alright, but you have a pretty limited selection.

What are some good alternatives to CDkeys?  I'm not necessarily unhappy with them, but I'm trying to start shopping around for the best deal when I buy PC games so it would be nice to know what the most reputable sites are.  I can't really buy everything directly from steam for 60 bucks a pop these days.  Shit gets expensive, son. I know about Greenmangaming, but what else is there?

Is there any genre where new game plus is more satisfying than survival horror?  I get so much satisfaction in going back through a second time with my now overpowered character and making mincemeat out of all those monsters that gave me such a hard time on my initial playthrough.

It's even better when they allow you to bump up the difficulty on NG+. Having all my upgrades would make my Akumu playthrough of Evil Within much less daunting.

There's still going to be new console generations, but I could see there being console upgrades within each generation now. Sorta like how in the fifth and sixth console generations where consoles would sell different color consoles. The intent was to either get more people interested, or have someone buy the same console again. The strategy doesn't really work well anymore. Now we're looking at upgrades like the New Nintendo 3DS and PS4 Pro. One X is certainly more of an overhaul, but it still identifies as an Xbox One console.

I've only bought a fighting game at full price at launch once and I kinda regretted it. But this game still makes me want to not just buy it day one but also invest in a goddamn fight stick and finally learn to play fighting games properly. My love of Dragon Ball makes it way too tempting...

You probably don't even need a stick for that game.  I usually use one for fighters, but I didn't feel like digging it out for a beta and it's just as well because the game was obviously designed for people who don't have fight sticks.  None of the inputs, at least none that I saw, ever got more complicated than quarter circle motions, which are more than doable on a pad.  If anything, using the dualshock might be easier because the shoulder buttons and triggers are mapped to shortcuts for vital mechanics.

Microsoft's plan with Xbox is explicitly to make it so everything is backwards compatible forever now. That doesn't mean Xbones will be forwards compatible forever, but every console they release in the future is intended to be able to play anything an Xbone can. I imagine we'll

end up with a simplified version of system requirements on Xbox games, where they'll say "you need at least an Xbox One Z to play this" or whatever.

Of course whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen, but that's the plan.

Did Microsoft say that somewhere or is it just analysis based on what they're doing? I can totally see it as they spent all this time with 360 backwards compatibility just to make the next gen not backwards compatible from the start. And I like how they implement their other systems too like game pass. So I imagine, when the next gen Xbox gets released, Xbox One games would be on game pass too.

I really like a lot of what Microsoft is doing on the Xbox and I would move completely unfortunately Sony's exclusives just appeal to me more.

Rumor has it Microsoft is trying to acquire EA, Valve, and PUBG corp.

Talk about a match made in hell.  I don't give a shit about EA Games anymore but with all those exclusive licenses they have, it would be a pretty crippling blow to Sony if Microsoft got them.  Question for our resident legal experts: can the likes of Disney or the NFL object to EA potentially selling to Microsoft and cutting Playstation out of their franchises without their input?

I would certainly hope Gabe wouldn't sell Valve.  Years ago I would never even consider the possibility he'd do it, but Valve is a very different company today than what it was ten years ago.

I think the most likely one is probably PUBG corp.  It would be the cheapest acquisition by far and PUBG is, for some reason, a massively popular title right now.  They already did this once with Minecraft so I can definitely see them doing it again.

Valve is a private company, so they couldn't just forcefully buy it like Vivendi have been doing with Ubisoft. Gabe would have to willingly sell it to them and I really don't think that's very likely. He was at Microsoft years ago and left to found Valve. It's also no secret that he's not a fan of the way Microsoft have been doing things on PC lately with regards to trying to lock down Windows app store style with UWAs. Plus, he's already stinking rich so it's not like the lure of early retirement would mean much to him. The only scenario where I would see him actually selling Valve would be if he wanted out like Notch did.

I pretty much agree with all those points, but Gabe is a pretty enigmatic figure lately.  He barely makes any public appearances or statements anymore that I'm aware of so who knows where his mind is these days?  I don't think he would sell Valve, but I can't say I'm 100% confident in that belief anymore.  I do agree it's the least likely acquisition either way, though.

At the very least, if he were to sell, I don't think it would ever be to Microsoft.

I'm not sure what you mean by enigmatic, though. I can count on like one hand the amount of times I remember him making any kind of gaming-related appearance in the past decade. It's possible I'm just forgetting but from what I can remember him and Valve have always been kinda silent for the most part. At least, they have been since they stopped making the kind of games they're famous for. Can't say I blame them, either. They have one of the most insufferable and toxic community ever. You can only listen to so many tired Half-Life 3 jokes before getting fed up and going into hermit mode.

But yeah, honestly, I don't think there's too much to worry about. Valve is doing all kinds of experiments lately. Designing a weird controller, (failing at) developing a Linux distro, investing in VR, etc. They're clearly doing whatever the hell they want and they have one of the (if not THE) biggest cash cow in gaming to finance their (or Gabe's) every little flights of fancy. Why would you ever walk away from that? lol
