FLD, one day I'll try one of these games just because of your enthusiasm.

The Steam release of 999 is the perfect way to start! Although, I really hope it's the original DS version. They made an iOS port that stripped out all the puzzles and it sounds... not great. There's a particular scene that was made specifically to have its full impact on a dual-screen handheld, so I really hope they worked something out to get the full game working on PC.

I tried it on the DS.  Way too much VN for my taste.  I just got so bored sitting there clicking through 30 minutes of cutscene.  Not even well-produced cutscenes, but the kind where it just shows a 2D picture of the character with a text box at the bottom.

Well, it is a VN, mostly. It's very much like Danganronpa where it's like 70% VN/story and 30% gameplay. Only instead of these Phoenix Wright-like trials here it's escape the room puzzles. The main draw is obviously the story. The difference is that, unlike DR, Zero Escape is structured like your typical VN where you have branching paths and what not. Only, it uses that in a really clever, mind-bending kinda way. If you just pick a path, complete it and leave it at that, you very much haven't finished the game. You're meant to clear all the paths before you can see the bigger picture (at least, that's true in VLR. IIRC, 999 only requires you to get a couple specific endings before you can unlock the true one). Hard to say much more without spoiling but, for what it's worth, I wasn't really a VN guy until I played this series. Hell, I still have very little interest in playing "pure" VNs. Spike Chunsoft's approach where the reading is broken up by actual gameplay bits and the story is batshit insane is just much more enjoyable for me.

To be fair, 999 was made for the original DS so yeah, the visuals are just basic low res sprites, which isn't that great. VLR made the jump to 3D models, so it's a lot better as far as presentation goes. Take a look at Zero Time Dilemma's screenshots to get an idea what to expect. I think VLR was on PS+ a while back, so if you've been subbed and redeeming all the games for a while, you might have the Vita version. Could be worth checking out if you wanna give it another shot. A lot of people would have you believe you absolutely need to play 999 first but I don't necessarily agree. You'll certainly get more out of it if you have, especially the last 20mins or so, but you can still play and enjoy the vast majority of the game just fine. Other than a few specific references and returning characters, it's kind of its own isolated story (and leads right into Zero Time Dilemma).

Looks like Aksys Games is localizing Tokyo Xanadu for Vita... and Steam!

Really surprised that XSEED isn't doing this one considering their close relationship with Falcom. Worth nothing that, strangely enough, this is the original Vita release from last year and not the newly announced eX+ PS4 enhanced port. Really wonder why since the PS4 version would've likely facilitated the porting process.

But more importantly, I'm really wondering if this means we could start seeing more PC releases of recent Falcom games. If Aksys is handling the port, that could explain why Falcom went with them over XSEED. I kinda hope Falcom is more hands on, though, because if they start putting resources into PC again, well, Trails of Cold Steel would be a pretty likely candidate. Cold Steel needs to be on Steam so badly, it's not even funny.

edit: Oh and 999 and Virtue's Last Reward are both confirmed to be coming to "other platforms". Considering previous hints, Vita and Steam are a safe bet. Weird that they're not specifying, though. Also, 999's art is being reworked (or it was originally made in high def). That's great news because the pixelated art would've looked pretty awful on PC.

Hopefully there will be other improvements as well. 999 badly needs a flowchart and an easy means of skipping through previously viewed scenes like VLR and ZTD.

If you have Spotify they've now got a "Gaming" genre made up of playlists from games themselves as well as stuff for background music relevant to the type of gaming you're doing (e.g to get you pumped or chill you out or whatever). I clicked the "music from FFXV" and it only had 3 tracks and not the one from the original trailer ("Somnus" or whatever it was) :P Otherwise it's got a decent selection, most of them been on there a while but now it's all collated together.

I'm liking this one atm cos of Stranger Things

PC Gamer have done a "Top 100 PC Games you can play today" list. The big caveat being "play today" as in it'll work on a modern PC n such, which I guess GOG helps stretch that a fair bit.

http://www.pcgamer.com/best-pc-games-1/

edit: Okay so the caveat means not only that older games are sliced off the list, but means that Final Fantasy IX can come in at 70 :P

Some pleasantly surprising picks in that list, like Alien: Isolation being so high (16). MGSV at number 6 has to be some kind of sick joke, though. Not sure about Dishonored being higher than both Human Revolution and the original Deus Ex, either.

Also, fucking lol

Wait, yeah, why isn't Thief II in the list?!?!??!

Knowing I had issues with one of the Thief games after giving a spin when disappointing with the newer Thief game I think it falls under the "doesn't properly work on a modern system" thing.

Yeah, Dishonored is good but I'm not sure I'd call it "top 5 good". But on the other hand having recently dived back into it, it does hold up pretty well since it has a stylised look (seriously developers, learn from that :/. TF2 is "ancient" by gaming years but looks great cos of a solid aesthetic, though slightly hampered by all the gamer mader stuff you can slap on).

Witcher I feel is in a pretty damn solid spot. It'll likely shift n settle a bit over time but I think it'll easily stick around as a great for a while. We'll have to see what Bioware do with Andromeda or Bethesda with TES VI. DA:I n Fallout 4 both fall fairly short of Witcher 3. Blood & Wine just further cements it, great piece of modern DLC.

As for the personal picks: Endless Dungeon is a tower defence? I feel I really didn't get the hang of that game (only got like 20-30 minutes or so into mind). Also weird that PvZ didn't make it anywhere in the list. I guess it's not super replayable but it's been enjoyed by most of my family.

It definitely does. I replayed it not that long ago (last 2-3 years) without any issues. Maybe there's some problems on Windows 10 I'm unaware of but I kinda doubt it. Looking at the last two squares of the bingo card, I'm inclined to think it might actually have been an oversight.

Hadn't really thought of that but yeah, I can totally see how it would hold up visually at least. But I meant more in the general sense. It's pretty much Thief meets Deus Ex, and while that's basically my two favorite game series blended into one, I didn't think it managed to beat either at their own thing.

Yeah, that game is a weird hybrid. You explore rooms and set up defenses in them so that the incoming waves don't overwhelm you. I really wanted to get into it (because the Endless lore looks pretty interesting) but I never really managed to.

Also, DA2 > DA1.

See, you need to be careful about saying shit like this. You know when you get arrested and the cops tell you "Anything you say can and will be used against you"? Yeah, that's the kind of stuff they're talking about. By saying this, you basically give anyone license to invalidate anything you ever say in the future simply by pointing back to it. Because this is one of those rare cases where an opinion can actually be objectively wrong.

Let's say next week we get into an argument in some other thread completely unrelated to games. We disagree about something. Then I can just do this:

Also, DA2 > DA1.

Your opinion is invalid!

and instantly win the argument. I mean, think about it. If you were so fucking wrong about Dragon Age 2, then what else are you completely wrong about?!?

Giving medics a gun that kind of acts like a sniper rifle in Battlefield 1 is a poor choice. Their role is in the front with the charge. Speaking of the charge, the bayonet charge is pretty sweet. Nothing like tossing smokes or gas then charging. Bonus if you are on a horse. It's the totally suicidal WWI reenactment of the following.

Nobody expects an one man charge since most people are sniping...

If you've ever been curious about why I (and many others) think so highly of the world-building in the Trails series, here's a pretty good video that explains it way better than I ever could.

It's a pretty good watch and might give you the push you need to give the games a shot!

Berserk musou is officially titled Berserk and the Band of the Hawk and is coming out Feb 21 2017 in NA.

Based on what I've seen, it looks like a traditional musou (as opposed to something more unique like Attack on Titan or Dragon Quest Heroes), which is great since I've been wanting to try one. Not exactly the best fit for a Berserk game but it should be a ton of fun regardless.

Here's a new (the first?) english trailer. If the trailer is any indication, it looks like the localization might be like Attack on Titan, i.e. english subs with Japanese voices.

Here's hoping for a decent PC port. Attack on Titan was a little barebones but it didn't have the performance issues of Dragon Quest Heroes, so I'm hopeful. They have to make a good one eventually, right?

I was watching a stream of the gameplay. It is totally a traditional Musou game but for Guts he'll have all of his tools available to him to use like his arm cannon, throwing knives and bombs. I expect a similar setup for the other characters but tuned to their play style. As for the structure (one character all the way through or like AoT where it switches) of the game, we'll have to wait to find out. Anyhow...

EDF!

The frogs are mobile as hell and have good aim. You can blast off their arms and legs to slow them down but they will fight back if armed and will eventually grow their limbs back. If they can they will retrieve their guns. So the way to kill them seems to be blow their legs then kill them ASAP. If not, blow off their right arm with the weapon. Cover is also your friend since they can come in waves of 18 (3 dropships with 6). Be careful to not get flanked!

The other humanoid enemy is also a giant but they're grey aliens in armor. They are also agile as hell with rolls and they have multiple loadouts. Other than that, not much else is known since the devs cut off the gameplay before it got good with them and the journalists played like crap. Oh yeah, they talk as well.

Ants are ants and flying saucers are saucers. They have a more forward momentum to them so they won't turn on a dime like those in 2017 and 4.1. Lastly...

RANGER CAN SPRINT NOW. Sadly you can attack while doing so but it'll go a long way to improve his mobility. Wing Divers are still around and I think one stream had a Air Raider but it may be that the skins can change depending on the mission.

Well, it follows the manga's story arcs (apparently past the Golden Age, too) so I would expect a story mode similar to AoT. You'll likely have to play as the logical character for a given mission as you play through it for the first time. In the case of AoT, you only get to replay missions as anyone you like once you reach the epilogue chapter.

Since Mal posted the last one, here's Super Bunnyhop's newest video. Another one from his trip to Japan, this time about gaming restaurants.

Doesn't look as great as their arcades but still kinda neat. The dorkiness of that Capcom bar is just adorable in the cringiest way.
