I always found the idea of LPers getting paid odd. I can understand reviews and first impressions (Like WTF is...) creators getting paid since they're doing something with it. Not to say that LPers can't just show the game off without having to worry that some publishers axing them. I watch streams of games all the thing and the folks I watch don't get paid for it. There might be a donation every so often to keep the website and Ventrilo server running but that is it. I enjoy watching people playing (Most) games so it would be a shame if that is stopped.

So yeah, I tilt my head at some of the monetizing aspects of sharing gameplay footage but I am against all this lazy and disruptive copyright claims by pubs.

Edit: Though I suppose the ARMA II and III videos that I love so much from ShackTac wouldn't be possible without this monetization of gameplay footage. Though I don't think BIS cares since they're all about community created content.

That's actually an interesting example because BIS requires you to get permission from them if you want to use their games for monetization. If I remember correctly they're pretty stingy about it too, taking down some videos in violation.

That sounds reasonable. In an ideal world, it should be the copyright holders/content creators that have the final and only say on how they would like their work to be monetized by fans. We can have blanket yes like with Paradox Interactive (Super cool by the way), something like what BIS is doing and outright no's. People may cry bloody murder if its a blanket no by the copyright holder but eh, their decision.

What has been happening with Youtube right now (And for a while now, it just haven't been this bad) however is well, on Youtube's end as far as I can tell. Its a mess and it seems to flow back to our copyright laws. Though some (Most, really...) of it from what I recall is all on Youtube like how I can if I wanted to... flag a video for some copyright thing just because I can.

I really don't see why posting footage on YouTube to talk about or show off a game is a bad thing. These companies have the legal right to censor videos focused on their games, I'm just not convinced that they should. How exactly does it hurt them? Unless you're getting negative reviews, I suppose, and then you're just being weasily and dishonest to try to suppress it.

It's even worse than we thought.  Even major players in youtube like Angry Joe and Boogie are getting their videos claimed.

You can argue the point of whether Let's Plays should be monetized until the cows come home, but claiming reviews and even interviews with game developers is just plain wrong.  The new youtube system is a complete mess, and if google doesn't backpedal on this hard and fast it's literally going to ruin a lot of lives.

It's not people being dicks, it's an algorithm that's probably being a little more zealous than intended.  Most of the hits are off of the music in the background of games, because the algorithm auto-matches it to its library of copyrighted music (those games' released soundtracks).

I still see it as people being dicks to begin with, but I guess that's another topic.

Yes, how dare people want to prevent other people from copying their shit and selling it without their permission.  How unreasonable!

That's what this is trying to get at: monetization of copyrighted material by non-copyright owners.  Yes, there's a lot of collateral damage, and if they don't fix that within a reasonable time then I'll agree they're being dicks, but at this point it's just an unintended consequence of an otherwise reasonable action.

Not sure this warrants its own thread (yet?) but looks like there is going to be a Firefly game after all. Seems to have been announced a little while back, but the first I heard of it was the other day. Due to arrive Summer 2014 on Windows, Mac, Android and iOS (with your account carrying across for whichever, should you wish for portability).

It's called Firefly Online but is a single-player RPG with social features like trading, rescuing, creating quests etc. None of that 'invite 5 friends to get your ship an engine'.

Will have a bunch of customisation options as well as crafting, and it seems like it'll have a turn-based combat system in the X-COM mould (or the option to try and smooth-talk your way out if you fancy).

It actually doesn't sound half bad. Though, obviously, there's not much to go on right now besides that brief and a few bits of concept art and development shots (that io9 handily put into a big article). I wouldn't go expecting anything wildly complex, of course, because it's probably not been given a massive budget; plus, it says the Android and iOS versions won't seem 'stripped-down' (though that seems to be feature-wise)...
