Well, I guess since the Valve was leaking pretty heavily they decided to just acknowledge it early.

I don't own a VR headset but I'm really excited to see what this looks like. If it's anywhere near as revolutionary as Half-Life 1 and 2 were, then this should be a pretty serious killer app for VR. And this is the culmination of their years of R&D into VR, so if they're calling it a flagship title then I fully expect it to be.

Someone pushed a button early on PSN.

There were too many rumors recently for this to not be in the works, but the timing seems to confirm that it'll be announced at the Game Awards. Can't wait to get a proper look at it! It's pretty obvious development started long before RE2 shipped, so hopefully it didn't go in a different direction. All I want is literally more of the same but with Nemesis.

Update 12/04/19 at 7:50 a.m.: Game Spark got in touch with Yasunori Ogura and asked about the image, who confirmed it is not related to a new title. He simply has not set a new header image since the launch of Metal Wolf Chaos XD in August, and had no intention of suggesting a new title. The image itself is from Amored Core: Verdict Day. It was not used much, so it was misunderstood as a new image.

I didn't always rent games, but when I did, it was through Redbox. So convenient, but at the same time I suspect renting games might not be done nearly as much as it was when I was younger. Just viewing people's thoughts and opinions online on recent games, the debates mostly come down to "Do I want to spend the time?" Kinda like "love it or leave it," I think people try to get all the information they can first and decide if they want to spend the time on the game. Not to mention some games take so much time to complete or that they're continually getting new content, you're not really getting the same "experience" as others.

That or Redbox is tired of investing in games and people stealing them with paper cutouts. Movies are a much cheaper investment and people are more inclined to rent a movie as it has a specific timeframe for consumption.

Official announcement:

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2019/12/12/microsoft-unveils-xbox-series-x/

So you can have it horizontal or vertical, the controller is new and has some elements based on the elite controller, a share button(!) and some other cool stuff.

Also, it's going to be backwards compatible, and if I'm reading this right, it extends back to the original Xbox(?) That's cool. :P

Thanks to backward compatibility, you can expect your gaming legacy, thousands of your favorite games across four generations of gaming, all your Xbox One gaming accessories, and industry-leading services like Xbox Game Pass to be available when you power on your Xbox Series X in Holiday 2020.

I'm guessing the fact that they say "all" your Xbone accessories, but only "thousands" of your old games means that they will have back compatibility for a lot of titles, but not for everything. If I had to, I'd bet that anything that runs on an Xbone will run on this, and while that includes lots of previous gen games it's not all of them.

"Xbox Series X"? FFS, they need a better naming department.

I wonder if the name may be them going all-in on incremental upgrades. I don't remember if it was a rumor or confirmed, but apparently they'll have both a low spec and high spec SKU right out of the gate and calling it Series tells me they're likely planning to have more along the way. So all their next-gen systems will fall under Series X and once it's time for another jump it'll be another series. So everything going forward could run on future boxes but when there's a gen leap you'll have new games with a base requirement like "runs on Xbox starting at Series XYZ".

At least, that's the only way I can rationalize such a weird name. Like, they never had any coherent naming convention but even for them this one seems kinda weird unless this is their intention. Then again, maybe they just wanted to have a system people could call the Xbox SeX. Actually yeah, that's probably it...

I think I have floated the idea of an incremental upgradable console on here before or at least had drafted up a post that I never submitted. It'd be neat if it were a thing... again? I know in the past there were things kind of like that for the NES/SNES and the like. Hell, what would you call the Playstation in its earliest concept?

That article is full of double-speak. "It's just Xbox going forward, just this one is the Series X". So, it is an Xbox Series X then. I mean it sounds like if Toyota was like "It's just Toyota going forward, but this specific one is a Corolla" and then saying I'm missing the point when I call it a Toyota Corolla.

I get what they're wanting to do, but the naming has been completely unconventional.

Microsoft and Sony have a product line while Nintendo has the ability of using their company name with their hardware. Thus we get names like Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo Wii, and etc. Sony kept it simple and went with logical numeration.

Microsoft, or more so the Xbox division, wanted both and that has turned into a cluster. Xbox 360 was just fine, but going to One, that started this mess. Because "one" is so ambiguous in English, it could get confusing for consumers. Then tacking on S and X for different models, it's like Xbox wants to have a naming convention, but it's limited to specific consonants.

After all, the new console is Xbox Series X, or Xbox SX for short. Heaven forbid they do a revision or new edition: Xbox Series XR Digital!
