As confusing as it is for us, imagine how it must be for parents and grandparents trying to buy consoles for their kids. Sony makes it nice and easy with a simple numbering system and Nintendo at least had the courtesy to go with a completely different name this gen but Microsoft still doesn't learn.

I got $50 in PSN credit for Christmas and was trying to decide what to do with it, and I was kicking around the idea of getting Nier: Automata even though I already own it on PC, because the PC version crashes whenever it tries to load an actual level due to my TV supporting HDR (even if I disable HDR). I had tried everything last year when I wanted to play the game, I installed FAR, disabled HDR, any crash fix I could find, and nothing worked. Well today I thought before I buy a second copy I'm going to try one last time, so I uninstalled the old version of FAR, installed the new one, booted it up, and it ran without issue.

So now Nier: Automata is back on my backlog...

All concept. So basically a portable PC shaped/modeled after the Switch. After having the Switch, I wouldn't mind a PC option like this. A fair bit of my PC backog would work on such a device. In the grand scheme of things, I would choose something like this over VR (up till we get enough killer apps...). Between this and a Switch is harder to say. Having access to Nintendo's IPs is kind of nice but having a Switch-like PC would defeat most of the need for a Switch for it's ports (ideally) so a Switch would become a purely Nintendo device which wouldn't be nearly as attractive.

Whatever happens with this concept though, I think there is for sure a desire for something like it.

See, I feel the opposite. In order to fit in that size and have any kind of reasonable battery life the thing is going to have to be very underpowered compared to something like a gaming desktop, which means you're going to get all the headaches and fiddliness of PC gaming combined with all the performance trade-offs of a console. If I'm going to get console-quality gaming anyway, I'd rather just play it on an actual console and save myself all the fiddling.

@Mister Jack Nintendo didn't invent that form factor, before the Switch came out Sony had the Vita and even before that Sega had the Game Gear.

Goddamn, ray-tracing is intense! This is the driver-level version since my card has no RTX cores but still. Had to run even Quake II at 720p just to get a playable framerate lmao. Looks really nice, though.

Modern games like Control and Metro: Exodus that use it for global illumination and reflections must look incredible.

What a time to be alive. Really glad I decided to play Witcher 3 instead of Horizon on PS Now because I'll gladly pay to avoid having to play with that insane compression.

*Sees last post in the games you've bought thread* Wow, perfect timing! :P

So uh, this happened today.

Seems there's no point in backing it because it destroyed its goal in like a couple hours, along with the first set of stretch goals, but yeah, I'll definitely take The Wonderful 101 on Steam day one!

Platinum also have 3 more announcements they teased, this one being the first of four. Please let one of them be a port for Bayo 2. I always hoped that SEGA still being the IP holder made it possible but if W101, fully owned by Nintendo AFAIK, is happening then Bayo 2 has to be doable as well.

For a series that last for say a decade or more, is it foolish to hope that it grows with the initial audience if it starts out rather adolescent (say geared for 16-18 year old) rather than remain catering to adolescent?

I think it could go either way, I think it depends how core to its identity the original tone is. It's not video games, but the Harry Potter books are I think a good example of a series that grew up with its characters.

Hmmm, MS is already bringing all their games to PC, and if Sony starts doing the same I won't have any reason to buy another non-Nintendo console again...

Would you really wait 3 years for the Sony exclusives though??
