Well it finally happened.  When Google bought Twitch people were worried that they'd fuck it up just like they fucked up youtube, but others were saying that such lines of thought were overly pessimistic and we should give it a chance.  Turns out the optimists were full of shit because Twitch has just integrated a content ID system for archived videos.  If any sort of licensed music is detected in the stream, an entire 30 minute chunk of the video will be muted, even if the song is only a minute long.  To make matters worse, it doesn't discriminate between music you play over the stream and music that was licensed for the game, so if you ever want to stream Grand Theft Auto you had better never listen to the radio ever.

The cherry on this shit sundae is that the system has been muting music that doesn't even need to be muted.  Tracks from Danny Baranowsky (Binding of Isaac) get muted, for example, even though he never wanted to be a part of this system and even though THE MUSIC WAS MADE FOR THE FUCKING GAME.

The only reason youtube gets away with this shit is because they have no viable competition.  I can think of at least two other streaming services for gameplay, one of which is already accessible directly from the PS4.  Twitch is fucked.

First point would be that as far as anyone knows Google hasn't actually bought Twitch, it was just a rumour. Which as folks have noted it actually becomes a bit less likely since Twitch is using Audible Magic, which competes with ContentID.

Also the only reason Youtube gets away with it is cos they have to. Same with Twitch. Unless you happen to know some crazy way of having every single second of video submitted to sites like Youtube and Twitch (Youtube can have hours of video uploaded in seconds) then sites like these need to run automatic content matching systems since it's much faster & cheaper than the alternative; manually scanning through everything or billion dollar lawsuits from the media industry. Twitch's implementation is shit, but do you really honestly think Youtube and Twitch really want to be gimping thier service like this?

Also music in-game is likely not licensed for broadcast in many cases, especially stuff like radio music in GTA. But in those cases it's up to the likes of the publisher to negotiate broadcast usage rights, but why the hell would they when they're making a game for private use not an actual radio station.

Basically the main issue is copyright be fucked. People seem to be suggesting Hitbox as the alternative, and it might be a bit more viable since it's not based in the US, so in theory shouldn't come under DMCA but US judges seem to think thier laws apply anywhere so who knows.

US laws apply to anyone operating in the US, regardless of where they're based.  So if they want to block access from US users then they don't have to follow our copyright laws, but if they want the US market they have to play by our rules.

Totally agree that copyright is fucked though.

Some games that didn't quite end up as how they started. More info on some than on others. I knew about the Bioshock stuff, in fact that changed a lot cos I remember coming across a years old games mag that discussed the up n coming Bioshock and it mentioned "little Sisters" but not much else was the same. I think a PDF of the original design is kicking around on the web.

What do you guys think about console exclusive bonuses that actually couldn't be done on other platforms?  I know that the whole "extra 60 minutes of gameplay" is pretty much universally reviled because it's cheap and unnecessary, but what about things like Kratos in Mortal Kombat or the extra Last of Us dungeon and Shadow of the Colossus items in the PS4 port of Diablo III?  Those things literally couldn't be in any other version, but does that make it any more acceptable to you?

I don't mind that at all. Kratos was awesome in MK. I figure if a developer wants to add it and if a console maker wants to pay for it, go for it.

Then again, Sony and Nintendo have way more exclusive characters than MS, so I'll benefit most of the time.

You know what was stupid though? Soulcalibur 4 and it's stupid Star Wars character thing.

Yeah, if the dev wants to put special characters/items/whatever owned by a certain platform holder in that platform's version of the game I don't have a problem with it, as long as it doesn't clash with the feel of the rest of the game.

Played a bit of this the other day with housemates BF. Gave a good initial test of the mic tied with the Shadowplay stuff (i.e I should have tested the mic volume first, and also in future record it separately). It's a neat game to edit due to the CCTV/iPad motion creating great points to cut.

I didn't have much issue with it, but more cos I was finding it hilarious to scare the housemate. She was trying to counter it with playing Animal Crossing. Shame the audio didn't pick up her scream.

Anywho it's on Greenlight as well as Desura and what not if you're interested. Relatively cheap and there's a demo.
