I'm not talking about the mission structure and whatnot in Destiny being better, I'm talking about the second-to-second experience of combat. If a shooter can't nail that then I'm not going to play it without friends insisting on it.

I think we need to remember that when we remove all else, it's a 3rd person cover shooter. I'm actually enjoying the shooting, but I get its not for everyone.

My problem is that the world seems totally devoid of fun. It's all dark, it's all bland and it's all very serious.

*Edit*

Should be said that Destiny nails to core shooting mechanics, but stylistically I think most people are going to find FPS more immediately enjoyable than 3rd Person.

Well forget what I said earlier about not buying it.  Apparently I'll be getting the PC version for free with the PC I recently bought.  I just emailed them to ask if I'm eligible and I am, so that's cool.  I doubt I would have bought this game for 60 bucks, but I'll take it for free, I guess.

I wasn't too interested in it before the beta, and the beta itself ended up putting me off further. So um, thanks Ubisoft.

That was pretty much how I felt.  I started to get a little interested as the beta approached, but then I played it and went "welp, this isn't any fun at all".

Isn't that just for the deluxe edition?

Lol, if only...

My best option in this case would probably be GMG with a 25% voucher or something, but that would be a uPlay code, so... yeah, no.

You Canadians keep whining about getting screwed over in pricing, but according to Google even on just a straight exchange rate US$59.99 = CND$80.32

Oh right, Canadian dollars. I thought you were talking about, you know, real money.

On an unrelated note, the uplay version actually plays with Steam a lot nicer than expected. After I added the exe, it worked just the same as if I'd bought it on steam, minus things like trading cards. The only time uplay came up was after closing the game. Steam version is still preferable, I suppose, but if you end up finding a really good uplay deal then I'm just saying that it isn't THAT bad for this particular game.

So? I'm aware of that but to me a dollar is still a dollar. I don't give a shit how strong or weak it is globally, I'm not getting more of them because of it. If they're willing to charge a fraction of the price to move copies in regions like Russia and South America, then they should be fine charging local currency here without jacking up the price.

Besides, you just know if our dollar recovers they won't be anywhere near as quick to lower the price as they were in raising it. As a result, now I have no qualms whatsoever about abusing regional pricing. I used to feel bad about buying from places like Nuuvem but now fuck you, if I can get your game for half the price from them then I fucking will. If they're going to be greedy then I'm not gonna feel bad about being cheap.

But a dollar isn't a dollar.  Just because it's called a dollar doesn't mean it's worth the same amount.  If it were renamed the Canadian Money Leaf nothing would actually change but no one would assume that 1 CML should be equal to 1 USD.  I might as well complain that new games cost £40 in the UK but I can't buy them for $40 here.

Though I totally agree that you shouldn't feel bad about abusing regional pricing.  If companies want to charge different (real value) amounts in different parts of the world for digital items they should be prepared for people to buy it wherever they can get it cheapest.

When I say a dollar, obviously I mean a Canadian dollar. Its relative value to the American dollar is completely irrelevant to me unless I'm buying something in US currency, like on eBay or GMG or whatever. So in that sense, yeah, a dollar is still very much a dollar to me. I don't get less/more of it or pay less/more for things here based on its fluctuations.

And the UK £ comparison doesn't really work because, as far as I'm aware, those prices were never exactly matched. Whereas, not that long ago I was paying $60 for my games the same as you. That's the main issue here, that's what makes it feel like we're getting screwed over.

I've not paid £40 for a new game in a decade BTW. ;)

Well and you can get plenty of games below $60 in the US.  I was just using MSRP for simplicity of making my point.

I assumed he was talking about the fact most new console games at retail are usually £45-50 and have been a while.

(PC is still cheaper mind, but creeping up. And also plenty places do deals, pre-orders etc. But the MSRP hasn't been a flat £40 for a while)

Well, having played this game for 15 levels by now (I believe the current cap is 30), I think I've experienced enough of the game to form an educated opinion on it, and I must say that I really misjudged it.  I, like a lot of people, scoffed at this game all the way up to release because Ubisoft was practically promising the moon with The Division and it seemed like couldn't possibly live up to the hype.  Whether or not they delivered will depend on who you ask, but either way I think they've put out a really solid game here.  I was expecting to be burned again like I was with Destiny, but The Division feels more like it's living up to Destiny's potential.  The world is huge and full of stuff to do and discover, which is all the more impressive when you consider that there's no loading most of the time, even when switching from PVE to PVP.  It also looks very nice, even after the downgrade (though misrepresenting the graphics was still a shitty thing for Ubi to do).

The most common complaints I hear against this game are that it's grindy and that enemies are bullet sponges, and to that I have to say that both of these points seem overblown, especially when compared to Destiny.  Maybe when I hit the max level it will start to feel grindy, but so far I haven't been forced to do a bunch of repetitive tasks over and over, and the bosses aren't even close to being as spongy as Destiny's bosses.  I suppose some of these people who don't like Division also dislike Destiny for the same reasons, in which case I guess these kinds of games just aren't ever going to be their cup of tea.

The third complaint I hear is that the guns don't feel as good, which...yeah, okay, that's a fair point.  Firing the guns in Division doesn't give you the same satisfaction that Destiny's guns do.  However, I think the team-based gameplay makes up for it.  Make no mistake, if you try to play this as a single player game you will probably get bored and frustrated.  However, if you team up with a group, you'll end up working together and coordinating tactics when you take on some of the tougher engagements.  You actually have to take each person's abilities and positioning in mind, and it's really satisfying when everyone is working together like a well-oiled machine.  Some of the earlier missions, like the ones in the beta, are easy enough that you can just get by with hiding behind a cover point and waiting for the enemies to come to you, but that won't fly later on.  You'll eventually reach a point where you have to start thinking strategically if you want to survive.  It's also nice that you can switch abilities at any time, thus letting you try a bunch of different builds without starting whole new characters.

I haven't done a whole lot of the Dark Zone yet, but what I have played of it so far was very tense and exciting.  I'll dive into it some more after I get a few more levels under my belt.

Dark Zone is awesome. I really wasn't interested in it until I tried it with a buddy. If you want to hit some up, add me - Som_Tervo on UPlay.

Yeah, The Division is fucking great. You know that bit in Splinter Cell Conviction where we played a segment of the Afghan war? So it was more like a third person shooter with that classic smooth cover mechanic? The Division is like an entire game of that, but hugely polished/refined and with a load of great RPG mechanics bolted on top, and a really compelling loot system.

I feel the same as you re Division/Destiny parallel, MJ. Obviously the comparison's with Destiny are a bit facetious, but there are a few parallels, The Division is fully delivering on what it promised, unlike Destiny, which delivered in mechanics and polish but not content. I'd put it like:

Destiny:

- mechanics: 9/10

- polish/style: 9/10

- content: 3/10

The Division:

- mechanics: 8/10 (though for my personal tastes they're a 9/10)

- polish/style: 8/10 (a lot more complex than Destiny and a few things are quite clunky)

- content: 8/10

On the whole it's just a better package, even though Destiny definitely did some things great.

So after not really liking the beta, I grabbed this since three friends were too. It's actually pretty fun once you get into it (and your cousin isn't just moaning over voice chat, lost and more keen to play shitty Trials of Osiris in Destiny).

Only just hit 30 but the actual missions and exploration has been fun. This is exactly how I hoped a Batman: No Man's Land game would be structured. Can't help feeling I wouldn't be half as engaged if it weren't linked to a larger progression, however. Now I'm 30, I'm not sure what there is besides DZ and daily missions. The endgame is yet to come...

On the hot topic, I wouldn't actually compare it to Destiny since it's more like Diablo. Definitely fill different niches anyway. The big positive here is that now my three close friends can actually play regularly where a lot of Destiny limits you to three-player groups (such a stupid design choice, actually).
