MetalCaveman
After months of nothingness, finally got some work done. Hopefully it won't take me another 5 months to get the rest done.
MetalCaveman
Shading is still some strange arcane art ever beyond my grasp, I do relatively well with simple shapes when practising, but when it comes time to apply it to something like this my brain just jumps out of my skull and flees the country. TheMightyEthan
Even that small amount of shading really lends it a ton of depth compared to the un-shaded version though.
TheFlyingGerbil
These are some ball pen sketches I made as I'm working toward a picture of Snuffkin and Moomintroll sitting around a camp fire in a woodland clearing with the Groke looking on from among the trees. Or the Groke looking at the lamp with Moomintroll and Snuffkin hiding in the trees. I've not decided yet. I've never made a complete picture, only sketches and doodles but I feel like I could get to a place where I'd be happy with these. I'd need to practice drawing in ink and possibly watercolour - the original Moomin illustrations were just ink, but I think a dark scene would be less heavy with watercolour shading and a bit less challenging for an inexperience person.
MetalCaveman
So.... Stuff happened, kinda lost the will to draw for a while, then more stuff happened and... yeah. Got back into it recently: Probably won't be done in time, but hey, at least it's something.
MetalCaveman
Well, looking at my last post in this thread sure is depressing. Haven't finished that drawing in almost lol, in fact, haven't been drawing much, bunch of things happened that kinda took the wind out of my sail, and then when I tried to get back into it I got stuck in this loop of wanting to get better at drawing and wanting to practice, but not wanting to draw anything because I hate how the stuff I draw looks. Sure been a fun year in that regard.
MetalCaveman
Fuck it, decided the best way to try and break through this block was to just try and replicate a drawing I like by reference. Spoiler Original (NSFW warning): https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/57225537 Did some warmups and then went at it, messed up a bunch of stuff, proportions, eyes, hands, but as a quick exercise it wasn't that bad(?). Did realize that by the end my hand couldn't grip the pencil anymore lol, I was struggling a fair bit, not that I use a death grip or anything, I try to consciously use as light a grip as I can, but even so, don't know whether to chalk it up to severe lack of practice, 'rona aftermath or something else. Brain is still a bit foggy, hand's a bit weak, but at least I want to draw again lol, whether I actually do so or not is an entirely different thing.
MetalCaveman
Progress!! Spoiler Was meant to be for Halloween, might be done in time for Halloween of 2030.
MetalCaveman
Spoiler Tried a different approach to shading, saw a tutorial on a different technique that I liked and tried to put it to use here, also faffed about with opacity and other stuff to try and create a transparency effect. Wish I could say I learned new techniques, but when it comes time for me to apply them it turns into: "No technique here, only insanity" To paraphrase an AH vid. MetalCaveman
Something different Kept the rough outline done with the brush I usually use for sketching, all color was done with the basic opacity brush, as opposed to relying on the colorize mask, shading was also done with that brush, could use some better/smoother blending, but for something I did in about an hour, it ain't that bad IMO. 3

MetalCaveman
Year of the bunny. Spoiler Also, got the Anatomy for Sculptors book, saw an artist I follow on twitter recommend it, been going through it but it's going to be a while before it shows (if that ever happens lol).

MetalCaveman
Was trying to draw something else, but it got to the point were I realized I bit more than I could chew lol, so went back to basics and drew the MVP of my Scarlet playthrough, like the other Poké ball, this was more of a quick practice than a proper drawing, though I'm still satisfied with the result, specially with how much time it took . This time I used the default airbrush Krita has, originally I was going to use a different brush, but I learned that it didn't play nice with the way I had set up the paint layers, so instead of getting frustrated and starting over from scratch I took it as a chance to practice with the airbrush tool. Poké balls are fun to draw for these practice sessions, they are essentially spheres, but less boring.
