Game Grumps

I don't think he's as charming as Jon, but I wouldn't go so far as to say he's unfunny.  He seems, at least so far, to talk about the actual game and what's happening on screen more than Jon did.  Whether that's a good thing or not is pretty subjective.  I enjoy it, personally.  Danny doesn't burst into song like Jon did, so we probably won't be seeing a bunch of remixes anymore.  There haven't been enough episodes for me to make a firm decision on the new Grumps yet, but I think I could get used to it.

Steam train is still a bunch of fuckshit, though.

Oh, and here's the real reason Jon left.

I enjoyed the dynamic Jon and Arin had, but on the other hand, I don't mind Danny.

Though it helps that he's pretty good at games so I don't have to shush that voice in my head going 'GOD STOP SUCKING AT GAMES SO BAD!' issue that I have with watching other people play games (hence why I generally don't).

It's the dynamic that I think is causing people to cry out Game Grumps is dead. Pretty much all the well-known Game Grump remixers are throwing in the towl as well as a few better known fan animators. Jon and Arin had Yin and Yang and it created some deeply memorable material.

Danny is okay, but otherwise it's hard to get into the new episodes. It has literally become "two guys play a video game" and not much else. I'm glad it's not at the same levels of suck as "Steam Train," but a truly significant part of Game Grumps has been lost.

That was pretty much the appeal of Jon and Arin. These two friends who were almost completely opposite but some how had great chemistry and fed off that energy.

Danny is alright, he knows his stuff and has a few funny moments. But they're both too self-contained. The chemistry isn't nearly the same and now it's like any other 2-player Let's Play out there. The worst part is that intro. I can't take Danny saying "not so grump". It's like mom's new boyfriend trying to hard to imitate the silly things dad did ala The Claw in Liar Liar.

Steam Train just sucks. No one really hates these new guys, they're just not funny. I think a fair amount of the backlash comes from the fact that they waited until they hit a million subscribers to introduce this new show. I guess they didn't want to build their own viewers on a separate channel so they rode off the success of Grumps to take 'em there quicker.

Yeah. Game Grumps has transformed into something completely different than what I intended. And yeah the new intro is just awful. Some of the suggestions on the Reddit page would genuinely help ease the pain. Such as:

- Calling this something else but keeping the channel.

- Calling Jon and Arin volume 1 and calling this volume 2.

- Giving Danny his own version of Grump and leave 'not so grump' to Jon as his legacy.

- At least attempting to explain what the hell happened to the fanbase as we still feel betrayed.

For me this is like when in That 70's Show they replaced Eric with that other dude that looked like Napoleon Dynamite. The guy was trying his hardest to be funny but after so many episodes of the dynamic of Eric and the rest of the gang to all of a sudden having a That 70's Show without Eric or what's-his-face it hurt the fans and they basically could never find the guy as funny.

His girlfriend already had to come out to defend herself after the onslaught of her Twitter feed. She's hardly the reason Jon just up and left Game Grumps, but at the same time I'm confident she was/is a reason. If it really was an issue of "not enough JonTron," I don't get how bad it would have been for him to up and leave not only Game Grumps, but also LA.

I'm sure Jon had a kind of Pros and Cons list, and honestly, I don't really blame him for his own life choices. I'm kinda bummed we couldn't have gone a whole year, and that Sonic '06 is pretty much dead unless Jon can Gust Grumps and do a Sonic '06 Finale Special.

  • 1 month later...

From the sounds of it, Jon left the show for reasons unrelated to Arin or his lady friend.  Given how people can be, it doesn't seem too unreasonable.

That said, after a month of it, I gotta say that I enjoy Danny more overall, both in terms of his playing competency and his sense of humor.  Not to say I didn't like Jon, but 'being loud and weird' is kind of grating sometimes.

If one of them had to go I would have wished it was Arin. He brought not as much to the table. Jon was better at games, was more of an entertainer, and Arin's sole role around Jon was

Jon: hey this game was cool

Arin: that game sucked

Jon: Y-yeah I guess it wasn't that good.
