So this film seems to be getting a fair bit of hype, and from a few people I wouldn't consider it to be getting so. But to me it seems like another brainless blockbuster action flick, but the reaction it's getting you'd think it's something substantially more. So what am I missing? It looks like the kind of film Michael Bay..or well more closely Roland Emmerich would make and be lambasted for.

I'm sure it'll be fine popcorn flick mind, just not worthy of the current pre-release hype it seems to be getting.

Guillermo del Toro is the writer and director.

He directed and at the very least cowrote Blade 2, both Hellboy movies and Pan's Labyrinth...he's fantastic. He was also supposed to direct The Hobbit.

 

Also, Charlie Day and GLaDOS.

Del Toro is indeed fantastic but he can't be given all the credit here. He co-wrote this with another guy called Travis Beacham. I read the comic book prequel written by Beacham a couple days ago and, according to the foreword, he's the one that came up with the main idea and wrote the original treatment. Del Toro only came on board afterwards when he was meeting with Legendary about doing a movie with them.

Basically what Strangelove said:

 

- DIrected and partially written by Guillermo Del Toro who is well loved among nerds for his films and loved among critics for Pan's Labyrinth.

- He tends to have really cool monster/creature designs and art style in his works, look at Pan's Labyrinth and the second Hellboy film.

- Charlie Day, Ron Perlman and Charlie Hunnam. Funny enough all three of them are from highly viewed/rated FX shows with the latter two being in the same one [sons of Anarchy]. I am really excited to see Hunnam in a blockbuster film as I think he's brilliant in Sons of Anarchy and want him to get more popularity and explode like other tv actors.

-Lastly and more importantly it's NOT Michael Bay. Which almost guarantees it won't be pandering to the lowest common denominator as badly as he does and since it's not based off a children's toyline it won't necessarily have to appeal to kids as well as adults.

Yeah I figured the Del Toro was an appeal, not seen Pan's Labyrinth myself but do enjoy the Hellboy films. Just the vibe I got from this so far is it didn't seem quite in line with those (especially stuff like monster design, seems a bit standard fare compared the zaniness of Hellboy designs and the eye person in Pan's Labyrinth.)

And while I highly doubt it's going to be as bollocks and Transformers, not sure on it being superdooper vastly beyond it. So far seems to be just robots and monsters fighting, I'm not sure on the gristle beyond that. Can whack it in spoilers if you want but what extra is there.

(though should point out I won't be seeing it anyway, given I've three siblings birthday this month fuck all personal funtime for me I'm thinking)

It doesn't have to be more ridiculous than Transformers which basically stopped giving a fuck with any plot and just focused on action and robots looking cool. This is trying to be an homage to old kaiju/giant monster films of days past. I think the closest we've had to a good one of that is Cloverfield.

Haven't been following the film too closely because it doesn't really appeal to me, but the marketing does seem a bit uneven at the moment. For now it seems to be aimed squarely at people who watch the regular Hollywood blockbusters and just want big, dumb action a la Bay, Abrams and most superhero films.

 

From what I've read, the film is a little more tongue-in-cheek than it appears (probably obvious to people who know the creators and such) and they're yet to show the character focus. For one, the Jaeger program was actually ended and it's just Idris Elba's character taking it over to continue the fight with whatever robots are left. There'll be flashbacks for one character who lost their parents to a Kaiju attack who teams up with another who lost a 'drift-compatible' partner. Then there's Charlie Day and Burn Gorman as two scientists, one a nuclear cosmologist and physicist wanting to destroy the Kaiju and the other a biologist actually seeking to understand them; meant to be a sort of comic, competitive relationship.

 

There's clearly a knowingness and intention to its style and story.

Dean, you have to watch Pan's Labyrinth.  If you did, I think you'd understand why people put so much stock in Del Toro's name being attached to this project.  Believe me, if it was anyone else I would have written it off as dumb Michael Bay level trash.

Well Pan's Labyrinth is indeed his current masterpiece but I don't know if this movie is trying to go for the same. I'd say this is closer to Hellboy in terms of what to expect.

"Whatever remains" Didn't it explode like a nuclear bomb, I'm pretty sure that beyond a few twisted bits of metal you're not going to find much left over. And yeah they didn't really go too much into the drifiting with Kaiju thing. Which would have been interesting to do.

I saw a good comment that this would have done better as a mini-series instead of a film. There's quite a bit of lore to expand upon and play with. I'd have said the film wrapped up pretty neatly to be looking for a sequel.

On the contrary; i kind of hope they delve into those aspects a little more. I still want Jaeger's vs Kaiju, but maybe giving us some interesting characters could be a good idea. The drifting thing was massively underdeveloped in the first movie. 

 

Apparently they threw away 100 minutes of extra stuff (i'm not sure if it was shot or not), but hopefully we'll see an extended version at some point.
