deanb
Come for the fattest pigeon, stay for the Pacific Rim comics. http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/comic/maybe-he-just-wasnt-paying-attention http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/comic/if-you-havent-seen-pacific-rim-yet-what-are-you-doing-go-now-drop-everything
CorgiShinobi
The sword thing, I can tell you why: DRAMATIC TENSION! Something that exists for the movie rather than in the movie. I'm sure there's a trope name for it because it happens in other movies. Things look dire while the heroes are pushed to a corner, but then they reveal the ultimate solution and bath in victory. It's awesome for the experience, but not for the plot. It should have been something the command center told them that was added to Gypsy prior to the mission. Sure that would have been dumb of them to not inform the pilots, but believable. Maybe say it wasn't tested or whatever.
Hot Heart
Also the whole ejector thing, which was saved for...story reasons. They never explained that maybe at least one of the dudes could've gotten out at the end...or Stacker just really hated him.
TheMightyEthan
A better way to do it would have been to have it so the characters know about it but the audience doesn't. Just have them explain that there have been upgrades and that someone will get them the full spec sheet for them to look at, and then not mention the specifics. Then when the time comes both characters know it's time to bust out the new weapon. Dramatic tension preserved and plothole avoided.
Hot Heart
But then it becomes a case of "So why didn't they use the sword from the start? That thing's like a one-hit kill."
TheMightyEthan
Just make up some bullshit about how it's experimental and they're not sure the chain system can withstand the stress or whatever, and they risk losing the use of that entire arm, so it makes sense that they wouldn't use it until it's that or die. Hot Heart
That would be acceptable. And while I'm here...meme.
Thursday Next
I could go for a sequel. Hopefully it will be better for not having to do the hand holding explaining about drifting and the need for two pilots to control jaegers etc etc etc. On the contrary; i kind of hope they delve into those aspects a little more. I still want Jaeger's vs Kaiju, but maybe giving us some interesting characters could be a good idea. The drifting thing was massively underdeveloped in the first movie. Apparently they threw away 100 minutes of extra stuff (i'm not sure if it was shot or not), but hopefully we'll see an extended version at some point. Yeah, sorry, by hand-holding I meant introducing everyone to the terminology, not the concepts. Now we know the terms Drifting, Jaeger, Kanji and all that the film can actually explore the concepts. Mal
Can it go on Netflix or one of the movie channels I get yet? I want to watch it but I don't feel like going to a theater (if they even still show it) and/or pirate it.

Don't wanna sound preachy, but if you're going to see one film in the theatre, make it this one. And i would avoid a shitty pirate copy like the plague, this film needs to be enjoyed on the big screen for it to be fully appreciated. deanb
VFX breakdown of Pacific Rim. Man I really should have thrown more of my weight into learning the particle effects system. Loved messing about with it but it wasn't considered a focus, now I see every fucker using them.
TCP
So, I may have downloaded this film, using... vaguely illegal means... and Warner Bros sent my ISP an e-mail, which they forwarded to me, telling me not to pirate any Warner Bros movies/tv shows anymore. deanb
I figured out how to watch movies for free. Are you funning me, son? It's fascinating how it works. Loads of computers connected to each other and you grab the files you want really fast. Holy jees, you've gone and done it haven't you? I did it a little bit, yeah. You goddam moron.

deanb
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGzN-ursd2Y Some more VFX work. Nice that the office fist scene is miniatures. 3D printed ones at that.
